Fighter multiclassing into Wizard

Rules Questions

As the subject implies, I have a 1st level Fighter that is multiclassing into Wizard for his 2nd level(Eldritch Knight is the plan), and I was curious about something;
Wizards begin play with a spellbook at no additional cost. Does this still hold true even if my 1st level of Wizard is my 2nd Character Level? does the book just magically appear in my gear, or do I have to pay?

I believe you do not magically get the book.
You should role-play it into your story.
Do you have a wizard in your party?
Maybe he wants to teach you magic and takes a few pages out of his book for you, until a time where you purchase a book in a town.

However in my opinion it makes no sense for you to randomly become a wizard in a middle of an encounter.

But, in the end it is all up to your group as well as your DM.

Levelling up should always occur when the party has downtime of some sort, even just an overnight camping. In this situation, I would, as GM or as a player, do this as one of three things:

A) The character had always planned on being both a wizard and a fighter, and had a spellbook with him that he has been studying all along. When he manages to finally get the hang of spellcasting with it is when he achieves that wizard level.

B) The character finds a spellbook during the course of the adventure and studies it and teaches himself to cast spells from it.

C) The characters have downtime in a city large enough to have a wizard's college where the character is allowed to audit a few classes, or pay a wizard to teach him personally, or in some other fashion get formal training on being a wizard.

By RAW: Yes, you get a spellbook for free.

As to where it comes from fluff-wise, see the posts above.
