Does Power Attack Multiple on crit

Rules Questions

I was looking around and I can not seem to find where it states it does.

I had a simular question...

PH wrote:

Multiplying Damage: Sometimes you multiply damage by some factor, such as on a critical hit. Roll the damage (with all modifiers) multiple times and total the results.

Note: When you multiply damage more than once, each multiplier works off the original, unmultiplied damage. So if you are asked to double the damage twice, the end result is three times the normal damage.

Exception: Extra damage dice over and above a weapon's normal damage are never multiplied.

I would say yes, power attack adds a modifier, but not extra damage dice. Any corrections guys?

Yes, it multiplies. The reason is due to the text that FrodoOf9Fingers quoted, found in the Combat chapter of the Core Rulebook.

And also because it doesn't say the damage doesn't multiply.

See I was going to agree with you until I read the Mythic Power attack feat today...

The mythic feat clearly states it is multipled which made me wonder if it was changing something.

That's the bonus damage that the feat power attack gives you.

So if your power attack normally adds 3 damage, and you have mythic power attack and you crit, you'll instead count the power attack damage as +6, rather than +3.

Benefit: When you use Power Attack, you gain a +3
bonus on melee damage rolls (instead of +2). When
your base attack bonus reaches +4 and every 4 points
thereafter, the amount of bonus damage increases by +3
(instead of +2). In addition, the bonus damage from this
feat is doubled on a critical hit.

Yep, I was going to post the text too. It doesn't say "It's multiplied on a critical hit", which is what it would have to say to even imply that the normal power attack wasn't multiplied (when every rule in the CRB related to it points to it being multiplied, cuz it is :) ). It says that the bonus damage from the feat is doubled. Multiplying the power attack damage by 2 when your weapon has a x3 multiplied is just weird, and doesn't really have precedent.

They also don't really do stealth-errata like this, without fixing the base feat first.

Here's Jason explaining it, with the promise to clean up the language for the final release.

Where is mythic power attack even found? O.o

Mythic Playtest document, from a half year ago.

Lantern Lodge

awesome, thanks. (another thing that my DM probably won't let me use... sigh..)

:)

Cheapy this is getting more and more messy... We really need a Book like Ultimate Mechanics where they just go thru each feat and skill and break it down with clear can and cannots and clear math mechanics

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The wording of Mythic Power Attack is from a playtest document, and a designer stated that the wording would be clearer in the released book.

Since that book hasn't yet been released, the issue isn't particularly messy yet (and may never be; the released wording may turn out to be perfectly clear).
