this may have been asked before but i tried several forum searches without any luck...
if you have all of the appropriate skills and class abilities (at the right level), can you take an archetype that is listed for another class?

i'm honestly not even sure how many cases there are where this would even be an option but, for example, a Tengu Archaeologist has disguise and knowledge (dungeoneering) and the trapsense ability, could he take the Swordmaster racial rogue archetype?

By RAW, no- "Each alternate class feature presented in an archetype replaces a specific class feature from its parent class. For example, the flowing monk archetype's redirection class feature replaces the Stunning Fist feature of the standard monk class." That to me says they are inherently tied to their parent class and can't be moved around.

On top of that, I don't think you can replace a class feature you only have due to another archetype.

Interesting concept though.

I'm pretty sure this is the only case where something like this would be even possible to think about (or any rogue archetype that replaces only trap sense). I would not allow it because, aside from the above line from the RAW, it also states you can't have two archetype that replace the same class feature, and technically this would be two archetypes replacing the same class feature. Not at the same time, but they would be.

what about archetypes that only replace abilities possessed by another base class? i think sanctified rogue and/or cat burglar (the catfolk racial archetype) only replace uncanny dodge and improved uncanny dodge- could you take one of them with a barbarian? if so would you get the replacement powers at the listed levels (4 and 8) or at the levels of the the powers they replace (2 and 5)? or what about a rogue taking the barbarian Brutal Pugilist archetype (which only replaces trapsense, uncanny dodge, and improved uncanny dodge)? would they get the replacements powers early (2 and 5, instead of 4 and 8 when they get the base abilities)?

there might be more than that, i don't know... i just picked those ones because they were obvious.

No you cannot because it is not a Barbarian archetype, it's a Rogue archetype. Also, Rogues and Barbarian gets Uncanny Dodge as different levels, which would upset the power level of the archetype by giving them powers earlier than they're supposed to.

Someone could houserule it, sure. Someone could houserule that Paladins can be any alignment and that Barbarians only have a d10 hit die if they wanted to for their games, but according to the rules as they are written, no.

No. Archetypes are for specific classes. Sanctified Rogue and Cat Burglar are Rogue archetypes, not Barbarian. It's not a matter of having the same abilities, it's a matter of whether it's an archetype for that class.

No. Rogue archetypes are for rogues only. RAW, even ninjas can't take them, although many DMs allow it.

I think the most interesting case is trying to stick the Tengu swordmaster thing on a barbarian, as it replaces only a single ability, which both get at the same levels, but still, "parent class."

For a ninja though (or an antipaladin, or samurai), "Alternate classes are standalone classes whose basic ideas are very close to established base classes, yet whose required alterations would be too expansive for an archetype."

I could see reading that as "These are archetypes, but they replace so many abilities it was easier to just rewrite the whole page than itemize." In which case, archetypes that only touch stuff that's exactly the same for each would be fair game.

By RAW, ninjas are rogue archetypes. As such, you may stack any rogue archetype on a ninja that replaces class features common to both the rogue and ninja.
