Help!...filling in the wizard role

Beginner Box

Ok we have a group going we are at level 5 and the guy that was playing the wizard decided he didnt want to play it. I'm debating on filling this role (right now playing a druid). I would like to know some good feats to take. We are able to use core and 3rd party content. If you have any other suggestions, spell combos, tricks, anything that can help me shine since I know little about playing a wizard. (always seemed to squishy). Thank you for any and all help!

The first question that comes to mind is, "what third party content is allowed"?

Knowing that will give us something to help advise you.

I guess my first question would be what specialty are you considering for your wizard? Do you want him/her to focus on damage, protection spells, party buffs etc? As an example, my last wizard i rolled specialized in Necromancy, so as far as feats, i chose Spell Focus: Necromancy so it would make my spells harder to resist, Spell Penetration which makes it a little easier to get past a targets spell resistance <This is preference for the player, at low levels you can generally ignore this, but i like to take it so i already have it for the next tier of Spell Penetration and as you rise in levels, you can expect a higher chance of a target having spell resistance>, lastly, i have a preference for taking improved initiative even as a caster; i like to be proactive, not reactive. These three feats i mentioned is assuming a starting selection of feats for a 1st level Human wizard. Hope some of this was helpful, good luck my friend.

battlefield control..and a blaster. Basically anything I can find on the d20pfsrd website I can use.

on top of that...Im kinda liking the flavor of a improved familiar..a sprite ..since its so tiny would there be a problem with it using a wand ect? It does seem that a familiar doesnt really scale with your wizard..would be nice if they got a new spell every once in awhile or something along those lines.

And yes im going human..cant pass up a free feat.

Lol, ok. My recommendation would be go with the Universalist school if this is really the first time you're playing the Wizard class. What that means, is you don't have to pick two different opposition schools. Although the restriction is not as bad as in prior additions of D&D, it's less tracking for you. In PF, all opposition schools means is that you have to dedicate two spell slots to memorize a spell from an opposed school. As a Universalist, that allows you to memorize any spell you have in your spellbook on a one for one basis; one spell for one slot. Also, and bear with me on this, I don't think your familiar is wand or any magic item capable. I went the route of Arcane Bond, so i am not really familiar with how PF handles familiars. Familiars generally provide a small bonus to certain skills or other game mechanic, the intent does not include magic item use i would imagine. However, someone more knowledgeable about familiars will correct me if i am off on that.

Skills: For each skill in which either the master or the familiar has ranks, use either the normal skill ranks for an animal of that type or the master's skill ranks, whichever is better. In either case, the familiar uses its own ability modifiers. Regardless of a familiar's total skill modifiers, some skills may remain beyond the familiar's ability to use. Familiars treat Acrobatics, Climb, Fly, Perception, Stealth, and Swim as class skills.

Seems like they get your skills and visa versa...

and from what I understand... a wand can only have a max spell level of 4? So theres no way to make a wand with a level 5 ect spell? Just wondering if theres a way around this or if Im missing something.

No, wands are kept to 4th level spells and below whereas a staff can have a spell of any level. Don't underestimate a wand of a 4th level spell, lol, if you're not familiar with the spell Enervation, check it out as an example.

Skills makes sense, but magic item use does not. Again, you may want to table that idea until someone with better experience with the whole familiar deal speaks up.

any other feats...3rd party ect?.. Any tricks or good spells you would suggest as well?

The best advice i can give you regarding spells is to select some variety i.e. combat oriented spells, one or two utility spells, maybe a buff spell or two. Having variety in your spell book gives, you as a wizard, more flexibility. The best way for you to choose spells for your spellbook is to read through the spell descriptions, get an idea of what they do. That is the best way to learn the class and gives you a better understanding of the role of the wizard. As far as feats go, i already mentioned the three i generally stick with as a human wizard. These in no way represent what everybody chooses for a wizard, people have different tastes for their builds. Having said that, Spell Focus: <insert magic school> is practically a given.

Once again, we are getting Core in Beginner Box...

If you go with an Elven Wizard at 5th level, your INT would be higher for bonus spells and DCs. Also look at some of the Elven reacial abilities: Elven magic gives you +2 v. SR and Arcane Focus gives you +2 Concentration (found in variant elf). Those save on feats for Spell Focus (school?) and Breath of Experience is nice to have too. I would Specialize in Evocation if you want blaster or Conjuration if you want battle field controller and take Augment Summoning and Web is your friend. I also would grab a HH for easier access to scrolls and wands. And a Rod of extend, lesser is great for Mage Armor. If you are using traits, drawbacks and occupations then you can really customized your Wizard nicely.

HH??

I think he means a Handy Haversack; a magic backpack for storage, it allows you to grab whatever item you "think" of without actually having to scrounge through a bunch of other stuff to find it.
