Conflict in Additional Resources (?)

The problem: Under Inner Sea Magic, it says that Cyphermages are legal, with the standard substitution of Spell Focus for Scribe Scroll. However, another prerequisite for a Cyphermage is the feat Cypher Magic from the Inner Sea World Guide, which is specifically called out as not allowed.

Suggested solution: I'm assuming Cypher Magic was banned because it has Scribe Scroll as a requirement, but looking at the effects I think it would work fine for PFS with the extant Int 15 requirement and Spell Focus replacing Scribe Scroll. This would then allow for Cyphermage requirements to be met. It would also open the feat to other Int casters, plus other casters who have a high Intelligence as part of their concept, which makes sense to me.

Of course, it could be that Cyphermages were meant to be legal without that feat. Or that I'm missing something entirely and there's no actual conflict. Thoughts?

Good find. Hopefully Mark or Mike will come along and let you know / fix the conflict in the additional resources.

I marked as FAQ as well. I hope this gets cleared up soon because I have character who I wanted to take a few levels in Cyphermage.

I think replacing the prereq of Scribe Scroll with Spell Focus would work fine for that feat. We will get it added to the next update of Additional Resources in October.

Also, while looking at the feat, I read Cypher Script. I'm not sure why it was initially banned, but I don't see any real problems with it. So, I will be removing it so it can be taken a legal option as well.

On the related note of conflict in the Additional Resources, The Talons of Leng in Ultimate Equipment are not allowed, but the version in the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition are. Both are the same other than the RotRlAE version does x3 damage on a crit instead of x2. A fairly minor difference, but wondering if that was intentional.

Thanks for the heads up. They will be removed from the RotRL Anniv.

**stuff about consistency**

One more, similar conflict:

Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide allows all equipment (except hide shirt); but Curse of the Crimson Throne Player's Guide allows all equipment on pages 12–13 (which includes "hide shirt"--same stats as RotR players guide).

So, to be a Cyphermage, does the character need 2 Spell Focus feats? That is, one to gain the Cypher Magic feat itself, then another one to replace the Scribe Scroll listed under the actual prestige class?

I have 3 characters who would be interested in becoming Cyphermages and I'm still slightly confused about that.

Thanks

No, certainly not. If two things have the same prerequisite, they're both satisfied if you have the prereq. It's like Improved Trip and Improved Disarm--you don't need two instances of Combat Expertise to get them both.

In general, unless a prerequisite specifically calls it out otherwise, Any prerequisite for one thing can also serve as a prerequisite for something else.

In your specific case, unless campaign staff pops in to say otherwise you will only need one spell focus feat.

Thanks Patrick and graywulfe. I am much happier now. :D
