The bear animal companion needs to fixed. It starts off as a small quadreped it needs to start off as a med quadreped the same as a wolf
it needs to be advanced to large at 7th level and be given the bonuses to strength and con or it is inferior to the wolf and a bear is not inferior to the wolf in any way. The bear also needs to be added to the standard Rangers animalcompanion list.

Shadow Lodge

Not really the place to do this Lou. Plus, its been ranted about for years in the various forums. Until it changes with the core, it won't change in pfs.

Why was my post moved ? I asked the question in the PFS questions because It related to my PFS ranger who is going to get a animal comapnion in two senarios. And I would like to get the bear animal companion fixed so he can have one not some bear cub that is smaller than a wolf or a lepoard

I'm sure devs will change the rules just because you want them to.

You are asking to change the core rules, so it was moved to the correct forums for that.

PFS is not the right forum to ask for a change to Core rules, even if it is related to a PFS character.

Shadow Lodge

Basically what Dragnmoon said. PFS forums are for PFS specific threads. Not general questions that apply all of Pathfinder RPG. PFS plays as close to RAW as they can, and there's no way they're changing one AC because it "should be changed". Honestly, I agree with you Lou, bears aren't sized right, it'd be nice to be larger, but its a core issue, not a PFS specific issue.

I'm not quite sure why they put it in homebrew/house rules, but here it is.

(An interesting note, a cavalier Beast Rider can have a large bear mount. Finally rules that allow dwarven bear riders.)

ToadKiller Dog,The rule should be changed not because I want it to be changed. [Even though I do} The Rule should be changed because it is broken that a wolf or big cat can get bigger than a bear which they cannot. So the rule should be fixxed.

Liberty's Edge

I can tell you now, this is something that is not going to change. The companion is essentially a Black Bear, which small for young and medium for adult fits perfectly. Wolf companions are more modeled after dire wolves in size, which are much bigger than a normal bear and not balanced to be a ranger companion. Ranger companions are more supplemental damage and utility companions. They are NOT meant to be a full combat buddy like they are for druids.

Rules will not change on your whim. You can houserule it in your home games (why this was moved). Nothing is broken about the ranger list.

Grand Lodge

Plus if a bear were medium from the get go it couldn't do cool things like this.

I agree with this completely. I don't understand why given all of the bear options, they went with a black bear. Especially when the precedent for different types of animals was already established with the big and small cat. Just seems strange for a game that upped the power and fun.

My first thought was that the bear was made smaller than the wolf as an attempt to balance the three-attacks-per-round bear against the one-attack-per-round wolf.

But then I saw the Big Cat.

Easy fix? Take a Big Cat. Have your druid insist to the high heavens that it's a bear. When you get to 7th level, have your 'bear' never use Pounce or Rake, because 'bears don't do that.'

They'll laugh at you (and shun you for being so unoptimal as to not use your 'bears' Pounce or Rake attacks), but you'll have a Large creature, and be able to call it a bear, and nobody can prove you wrong, because you're the darn druid, and you know more about animals than they do!

If anybody gets too obnoxious about it, have your 'bear' get huffy and refuse to help them. "You hurt his feelings, calling him a cat..."

Liberty's Edge

A lot of the AC choices are stuffed. The problem is not that the Bear is inferior, its actually that the Big Cat and the Raptor are just too damn effective.
That has always been the problem.
What is worst is that any restriction or weakness of the Big cat or Raptor (for example going up against DR foes) is even more evident for the "lesser" choices.
Home brew fixing this is easy - but for PFS play - no Im afraid you are out of luck unless you follow Set's advice.
