How do you use Masterwork Backpack?

Rules Questions

The Masterwork Backpack from the Adventurer’s Armory book raises your carrying capacity up 1. Obviously that is anything that can actually fit in the backpack.

However, how does that work, exactly? If you can fit ‘everything’ in the backpack, it makes it simple as your carrying capacity is effectively 1 higher. But the backpack, from what I understand, is about the same size as any normal backpack. So how does it actually work splitting your strength for carrying capacity? Split between your normal carrying capacity and your +1 from the Masterwork backpack?

I don't think it specifies that the increased carrying capacity only applies to stuff inside the backpack [there's not even an available mechanic for that kind of carrying capactity splitting]. You just treat your strength as 1 higher for carrying capacity.

Yeah, was a bit confused by it as I couldn’t figure out how you would split it.

Will have to point that out to my GM.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

It applies to everything you carry, not just what goes in the backpack. It would be akin to a modern loadbearing system or alice pack. The rigging of the backpack would also serve to hold (and spread the load of) sword belts, and other items slung over your back, thus reducing your overall load. Sure there are somethings like armor that the backpack has nothing to do with, but like everything else, it's abstracted. Your overall load is lighter so you can more easily bear your armor and other such items that might not be in the backpack itself.

I am assuming the design makes it easier to carry the weight by displacing it. We had new rucksacks(military backpacks) before I got out of the military, and they made things a lot easier to carry.

Thanks for everyone’s replies. Displacing the weight/attaching to backpack makes sense, and as I said, will point it out to my GM. Don’t feel he will have any issue with it.

Anyone notice that it weighs twice as much as the normal backpack? The increased carrying capacity of the item is almost completely nullified except for high strength characters who don't really need it. It's the poor 9 STR wizard who needs to carry more. Those spell books are heavy.

I figure for 300GP extra, I figure they can get the backpack's weight back down to normal.

I think the idea of the masterwork backpack is that it is designed to be adjustable to any humanoid's frame, and allows for more precise and balanced weight distribution so that the load is easier to carry.

These exist in real life. They work as advertised. Distributing the load properly really does make it much, much easier to carry heavy loads for extended periods of time.

However, the increased weight of the thing really doesn't make sense. The ones I've looked at are hardly any heavier than a standard backpack. In some cases, when using expensive materials like carbon reinforced rods and fabrics, they can even be lighter.

I would allow paying a premium to get the weight down.

Go on a long distance hike with a well crafted backpack and load it with as much as you can carry comfortably.

Now repeat that trip with a K-Mart reject.

You'll never ask that question again.

Better yet, load it up with your gaming books and hike two miles uphill to run a game and then have to walk back down after :P
