Shadow Lodge

Not a problem, as long as we all know someone's going to be away, and we have an idea what their intentions are, I can describe their actions.

Shadow Lodge

Kavrik climbs into the cave. His gear is still hanging outside, but Galstok's hammer is within reach. As the most obvious weapon, he unfastens it from the pack, while the spike tentacle takes advantage of the opportunity.

Attack of Opportunity 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6

Shadow Lodge

Valoria climbs to the lip of the cave, and can now see inside.

End of round 5.

Shadow Lodge

Round 6:

The thick tentacle makes its initial attack;
Tentacle 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Damage 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Free grapple 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

Second attack with the spike, this time, for the first time, being able to take advantage of its ability of greater accuracy vs a grappled opponent;

attack roll 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
damage 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4

Sorry about that; looks like it finally decided to up its game.

Galstok is grabbed, and held still, despite his furious exertions.
Those who are still conscious can only watch in horror as the slender spike is positioned behind his neck, then driven into his flesh. The thin tentacle grows engorged, and peristaltic waves run down its length.

Shadow Lodge

Sephird remains slumped on the floor next to Tregar.

Ensu next.

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

Ensu will cast Stabilize on Sephird.

Shadow Lodge

Free Perception check;

Perception 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

You notice Sephird appears to be breathing, and is twitching, as though to grasp his weapon, but does not have the strength to do so.
(Gamespeak; you think he's already stabilised himself.)

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

I make that as 10 damage so far correct?

Galstok lets out a roar as the spike stabs into his neck. Teeth bared Galstok growls out a curse as he attempts to strike at the creature holding him with the blade in his hand.

Rage: 3/5
Attack:1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 7 - 2 = 21
Damage:1d4 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

Ensu will attempt to take out the longer tentacle with his longspear, not having much else he can do with that thing active.

attack 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
damage 1d6 ⇒ 5

Shadow Lodge

Ensu:
While the tentacle does have reach, creatures with reach aren't assumed to always be occupying the squares they could theoretically reach into. They keep their limbs close by, until they see an opening, then 'wham', they thrust the limb out into the threatened square.
An exception being when they draw an AoO from their target, or when the target has readied to attack them if they reach at them.
In this case, to stab it in melee, you'd need to walk up close to the creature's space (the pepper-shaped mass, on the map), which would draw AoO from the long tentacle, which has just been accosting Galstok.
I'm reasonably sure you don't want to draw AoO from this thing (I deliberated for a while before having Tregar take one for the team), so I'm happy for you to reconsider if you wish.
You do still have a source of ranged healing, if you don't want to get close.

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

GM Snorter:
The longspear is my melee weapon, and I have no intention of using a healing burst and healing our foe at the same time I'm healing my party members.

Shadow Lodge

Right; I didn't see you had a reach weapon. That makes a big difference. You only have to step to within 10 feet of it, then attack, without provoking AoO.

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

With that roll, I don't think it really mattered how I attacked, it still failed miserably.

Where is Valoria positioned, and is her gear next to her? Also would casting a spell provoke AoO?

Shadow Lodge

Valoria:
You're at the lip of the cave, looking in, due to act after Galstok and Kavrik. You don't believe the longer tentacle can reach that far. And your gear is hanging just out of the cave, below Kavrik's.

Galstok; I see you applied the attack penalty for being grappled, and dropped the Power Attack. That's instead of trying to break free, right?

Luckily, it pays off. Your hand is not quite immobilised, and though limited in your range of movement, you do manage to tear a jagged hole in the creature's side. It convulses, and its arm goes limp, depositing you on the floor, still wrapped, but soon to be free.
The body of the creature is still fixed to the ceiling via the suction of its feet.

Kavrik steps up, and using your hammer, swings at the body.

Attack roll 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (6, 4) + 6 = 16

The creature's skin remains tough as cured ox-hide, but its innards explode through the wounds in its side, covering all except Ensu and Valoria in dark green ichor.
One by one, the feet detach from the ceiling, and it falls on top of Sephird.

Shadow Lodge

Thanks to everyone for being patient, with what was a complicated setup for my first hosted PbP battle.
It wasn't the ideal situation, having most PCs unable to act from round one, coming in on later rounds, plus having to face a focussed grappler with reach, two attacks and poison*.
It had the potential to be a TPK, with some better rolls, especially the attempt to sneak up at the start. That could have allowed PCs to be dragged off and KO'd without the rest knowing anything was wrong.

*Which reminds me; how good is Valoria with healing?
She sees Galstok clutching his neck, attempting to staunch the blood, which is flowing fast, through his fingers and down his arm.

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

Once everyone is up on the ledge, Ensu will wait for the boat to be out of the way, than manhandle the corpse over the edge into the water. Once the creature's body is safely out of the way, he will utter a soft prayer, and a wave of light energy will pass over the party.

1d6 ⇒ 5 healing to everyone

Shadow Lodge

I need to see what Valoria does, in case Galstok hits the deck...hard.

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

I was curious about how much con damage I had taken from that thing. :)

Shadow Lodge

You need to roll the initial Fort save now.
Strictly speaking, it was needed at the point of injury, but I didn't want anyone acting on meta-knowledge that you were OK.
You'll get the benefit of raging bonus to your Con, at the time you were hit.

Then, there could be successive rolls based on that, but you'll want to see if anyone aids you.
Everyone else; the second save kicks in at what would be the top of the next round (exactly one round after the creature acted), so the initiative is still important, and the order is;

Valoria (end of this round);

Beginning of next round;
Second saving throw for Galstok (if required),
Sephird (Zzzzz),
Tregar (Zzzzz),
Ensu,
Galstok,
Kavrik,
Valoria.

Valoria is a wizard. No healer. Pity no chance to take part in the combat.

As Valoria climbs up onto the ledge she looks forward to see the monster on the roof and two of them lying on the floor, a very shocked expression appears on her face as she mutters, "This is not good."

Seeing Kavik swing at the creature with the creature explode, she breaths a sigh of relief, then turns to quickly pull up the rest of the gear and ropes. She picks up her backpack and casts light onto her ring to provide better light on the scene of carnage. She rushes over to Sephird to help get the creature off his body using her quarterstaff, before he suffocates if still alive as she does not know.

Does she need to do a Fort Save as she was not covered by creature's interns?

Shadow Lodge

Whoah, that's a lot of actions; we're still in initiative for a little while, as the order of actions could make a difference to Galstok's recovery.

So, climbing in will be a move, then you've a choice between lighting up the cave, pulling up the gear, or moving over to check on someone. Any aid would be next round, unless it's Galstok, who's only two squares in.

And it's only Galstok who needs to make a save, for being injected. The offal shower, while utterly gross, is just for flavor.

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 2

"zzzzzz... mommmy... zzzzz"

Liberty's Edge

"Pink elephants on parade!
Pink elephants on parade!
What a to-do!
What a to-do!
What an unusual crew!

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

And here is where my 12 con might come back to bite me. :)

Initial Fortitude:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

And if another needed for later.

2nd Fortitude:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13

EDIT:Ouch!

Shadow Lodge

Well, you certainly felt the initial effects. Your neck feels like it's burning, and your blood is running from the wound faster than it should; instead of being thick and scarlet, it is thin, watery and translucent.

You try to stem the flow, as best you can, while Ensu chants a prayer to his god, filling you with a wave of energy that numbs the pain of your crushed ribs and closes some of the open wounds.
Sephird and Tregar stir on the floor, woken from unconsciousness.

Kavrik peers over and declares the wound clean, but a dark bruise is forming behind your ear and up the back of your head.

Gamespeak - Failed first save, so subject to further saves, made the second, so no ability damage, but not yet out of danger. If anyone has a way to influence further saves, speak up, before he rolls again.

As Valoria is no healer nor have any healing devices on her. She will do the actions in order as written already, taking as many needed rounds to complete, unless the groups gets interrupted by other attack.
... then turns to quickly pull up the rest of the gear and ropes. She picks up her backpack and casts light onto her ring to provide better light on the scene of carnage. She rushes over to Sephird to help get the creature off his body using her quarterstaff, ...

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 2

"zzzzz... snork... mmppphhs nnneeppphhh*" One arm flails weakly from under the dead body.

*get me out!

Liberty's Edge

Tregar gets to his feet and sees the commotion around Galstock.

He walks over and directs Kavrik to press on certain points.

"That'll stop it getting deeper in."

He then pulls his skinning knife.
A quick cut, and some of the thin fluid gushes from the wound.

"And that'll flush it out."

"Give him plenty of water to replace what he's lost."

Heal 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Take +4 to the next save.

Shadow Lodge

NEW MAP

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

Looking up at Tregar, "Thank you, Tregar Quill, when Kavrik I wondered it might be too far to be sucked out. That be an interesting method of draining it."

Fort:1d20 + 3 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 3 + 4 = 27

EDIT:And there is the nat20 we all were looking for. :)

Liberty's Edge

I have no idea if that's a viable cure, but it sounds badass enough for a field cure for D&D PC. Don't try that at home, folks!

Water is poured over the cut, and clean wadding tied round Galstok's neck. The blood is now running thicker, and red.

"You'll always have a scar where it got you, and probably a recurring abcess, but it's better than the alternative."

The burning starts to fade, and you believe you escaped the potential consequences.

I had to make up the change to PF poison rules; based on its 3.5 entry it wears off after two failed saves, so I carried that over. I didn't fancy spending $30 to find out what Bill and Clark did with the beast.

Shadow Lodge

It is clear there is no-one coming to investigate the noise, so you believe no alarm has been raised. You are able to bring any remaining gear into the cave and take the time to properly equip.
The sailors have rowed away from the rocks, and are holding their position, looking up for instructions.
Two tunnels lead out, one to the south west, the other to the west. The light reveals the outline of a door at the end of the western tunnel.

Once she got the creature off Sephird, she splashes his face with some water. When he awakens, she walks around to have a closer look at the creature bits, using her knowledge she has of creatures. While looking at the creature she also looks around for any items left behind from previous victims.

Rolls:
Knowledge (Dungeoneering): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

She looks towards the passages leading off from the cave room then speaks politely, "If you want me to extinguish the light, just tell me. Easy to relight as needed. Though going deeper will need light if no lights have been provided to light up the passages."

This is my last post until I am back on Monday. DM to roll as needed while I am away.

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

Reclaiming his blade from ground and sheathing it, Galstok pushes himself back to his feet. Looking over to Kavrik, "Good swing, Kavrik Doln.", then extends his hand for his hammer.

At Valoria's words, "Aye, as much as I'd rather not we'll need the light, our prey have very good nightsight."

Shadow Lodge

"This one seemed to operate without sight of any kind."

Valoria points to the deceased creature.

"There are similar creatures, in the ocean, who use specialised nerve clusters to detect heat, or vibration. Most likely it was acting on instinct when it grabbed Sephird."

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 2

"Instinct or no, I still don't like it." Sephird kicks a chunk of the creature off the ledge while he checks over his weapons. "Thank you for the healing, I did not wish to have such a short adventure."

Liberty's Edge

"Best let them know we're safe."

Tregar waves to the sailors below.

"We don't seem to have aroused any goblins; maybe they steer clear of this cave?"

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

Finally catching his breath from his exertion, Aye, if that beast is any indication they may not feel the need to watch this entry way.

Valoria gives out a soft chuckle before speaking softly, "The goblins won't be pleased when they discover their door keeper has been disposed of."

Looking down the passages, "There seems to be a door at the end of this passage ...", pointing down the passage, "Probably to keep them safe from this creature. Really would not want this creature roaming freely. As needed I can open and closes doors, etc."

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

Ensu can do another burst of healing again if need be, otherwise, he reloads his crossbow, ready for more fun with goblins.

Shadow Lodge

Another burst probably would be appreciated, by all three.

Unless I hear different, I'll assume you're investigating the western tunnel?

male gnome cloistered cleric 3 [ HP: 19/23 | AC: 14 T: 11 FF: 14 | F: +5 R: +1 W: +6 | Init: +1 Perc: +2 | Effects: ]

1d6 ⇒ 1
1d6 ⇒ 5

Shadow Lodge

That's enough to bring everyone back to full health; even those who fluffed a couple of stabilise checks.

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

Settling his hammer on his shoulder, Shall we be off, then? And sets off towards the door.

Shadow Lodge

Watching and listening carefully, for any sign of goblin activity, you reach the door at the end of the west tunnel.

No traps or alarms appear to be present. The door is plain, and unadorned.

Sephird:
You believe this is not the original door, as there are an extra pair of old hinge marks, and a strip has been cut from one edge.

A side tunnel in the right-hand wall leads off about ten feet, before turning to the left.

NEW MAP

Valoria will fall remain sort of in the centre of the group as they move and to provide greater visual distance to the front line.

She unhooks her crossbow and loads it with a bolt, carrying it in on hand while her quarterstaff in the other. This way she can choice which weapon to use, by dropping the other, or both if both hands are needed for a spell.

Male Human (Varisian) Rogue 2

"Door, or passage? I am inclined to try the passage first." Sephird whispers back to the others, gesturing to the tunnel leading right.

Male Shoanti Human Barbarian 2

Gesturing with his hammer towards the passage, Galstok nods in affirmation.

Looking back over the group, he marks everyone's positions.
Just curious as to who is were.

Shadow Lodge

Everyone's nowhere in particular, just milling around the first cave and the tunnel. This is all happening while people are equipping and catching their breath.
I'd assume Sephird is always first to investigate any doors, unless I hear different. Characters with ranks in Arcana will naturally gravitate to strange runes, characters with Religion will check out the religious trappings, etc. Where people spent their ranks indicates what they (and their PC) are interested in.
This has nothing to do with 'Gotcha!', and everything to do with keeping things moving. If we need six votes to go through every door, we'll never finish.
If everyone keeps checking in, stating their preferences which way to go, and I'll go with the majority (or split the party, if needed).

We've got two votes for checking the tunnel before going through the door, Tregar can make that three, with no votes against, so if I don't hear any objections, soon, I'll go with that.
