One Must Fall:2097 was a really cool giant robot fighter game that I liked.
and Yar's Revenge!

TUNNELS OF DOOM!!! Wish I could play this again with an emulator.

Stonekeep. My kids were young and we all sat there mesmerized. And how about the Wahooka! I remember staying up late trying to kill the octopus in the sewers. We were all there for the finish and we sat sadly through the credits and were thrilled when we found the Shadowlord's recipe for pumpkin cookies at the end. My kids are in college now but they still remember the Wahooka song. Those were the days.

Computer game nostalgia kicking in hard. Another favorite of mine was Alien Legacy, a sci-fi resource management game (similar to sim city) with a fairly complex story built in. Again, I never got to finish it, although this time it was partly due to a problem with the game itself. Basically, during certain activities in the game, time would pass as far as resource use was concerned, but time would freeze for other things. I imagine there was a patch, but I never got it. I'd love to play it again, if it worked.

Wolfenstein. The original.

Have any of you heard of or played a game called Pathologic?

It's a Russian adventure game set during a plague in this weird town in rural Russia. You play one of three characters (Bachelor, a young city doctor; Haruspicus, a brawny organ-reading holy man; Devotress, a young girl that can heal with a touch) trying to cure the plague. After you pick a character, the other two are still in the game to play a role in the story.

The whole setting has an atmosphere of theater: you pick your character after a short scene on a stage, there are men in raven costumes called Executors that stand outside of a friend's house if you fail to accomplish your goal for the day and indicate that they're going to die because you didn't accomplish what you had to, mimes acting in the role of a Chorus like a Greek tragedy and all kinds of other things. Over the course of several days, prices for food and supplies skyrocket. There are riots, a brutal military crackdown, an orphanage shaped like an upside-down conch shell, a boarded-up asylum and slaughterhouse (and Lord only knows what's going on in there).

I've only read about it in a long essay (I think it was on Rock, Paper, Shotgun several months ago). It's dreary, depressing and probably not fun. But I don't think fun is necessarily the point, though; it's art. I think it's more about building this strange setting, creating this horrible situation and asking how you will justify your actions and the choices you have to make. It was given all these awards in Russia, but it sold poorly in the U.S.

I want to try it out.

Nostalgia, yay.

How about the Bard's Tale series of RPGs?
I think I spent a few hundred hours playing the Bard's Tale 3. And I lost my decoder thingy, too, so I never got around to finishing it.

As for fighting games, has anyone else played the old and bizarre Tongue of the Fatman? I remember trying and trying to find a copy of this game like it was some kind of weird legend.

Yar's Revenge...Fakey, you and I are going out to grab a couple of six packs and then head back to my place- I have the original on 7800 Atari(remember that?) and we can play it till we puke!

That said, what are you running Tunnels of Doom on? Maybe I can help.

Hokay, I actually had to sit this thread out going through my old video games...I believe I am ready to post now.

RPGs(console)

Final Fantasy- 1 through 6 only. Yes, I am a snob like that. 7 doesn't hold a candle to the original 6, although I did like X and X-2.

Phantasy Star- All of them. I do not consider 3 to be the black sheep of the series, although 4 is my favorite with the team-up attacks. The ONLY game to blend fantasy and science fiction and get it right!

Shadowrun- Sega Genesis only, and even then, only if you're playing a decker. Screw the nouveau FPS- this is Shadowrun in it's purest form.

StarTropics- Perhaps the greatest action RPG I've ever played. Anybody else remember putting the game booklet in water to get the secret message?

Princess Crown/Odin Sphere- Hard to find nowadays, but a great action RPG, with excellent story and combat.

Suikoden- Once again, all of them, but 4 is the goat of the series. Suikoden 2 is the best.

Secret of Mana- My wife would hit me if I didn't put this on here. Great game, and multiplayer.

Skies of Arcadia- The gem of the Dreamcast.

Tales of Destiny- While I am only putting down the first game in this series to reach american shores, the Tales Of... series is a great action RPG with hidden multiplayer deliciousness.

Lunar 1 and 2- Just beautiful, but a little bit on the easy side.

SaGa Frontier- All of 'em, from Final Fantasy Legend on Gameboy(my very, very first RPG of all time! Loved it so much I made another version of FFL2 using RPG Maker!), to the more recent Unlimited Saga, these games were RPG freedom given form.

Other(console):

Bushido Blade 1 and 2- The most in-depth fighting game I've ever played. No life bars. No supers. No nothing. Just you, and your sword. One hit will maim or kill you. Love it to this day.

River City Ransom- My best man and I would spend afternoons playing this game. He would always kill me before fighting the last boss. Why I kept playing this game with him, I don't know.

RPGs(computer)

Baldur's Gate 1,2,3/Icewind Dale 1,2/Planescape: Torment- Neverwinter Nights takes a back seat to these gems.

Vampire: Bloodlines- This game was never completed, but my wife still plays it despite the havoc it creates with her computer.

Simulation:

Mechwarrior 2 and 3(with expansion packs)- The pinnacle of Mechwarriorocity without having to go all out on RAM or a video card. Still waiting for a Dark Ages patch for these games.

X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter- All the fun of piloting, without a ridiculous storyline holding you back.

Arcade Games-

King of Fighters- All of 'em, from '94 to 13. Noone else does it better. HAIL SNK/PLAYMORE!

Samurai Shodown- All of 'em once again, although 3 is the black sheep of the series and 4 is the best in my opinion(gotta love the fatalities).

The Last Blade 2- Second only to Samurai Shodown, this game deserves honorable mention.

Double Dragon- Both the side scrolling beat 'em up and the weird fighting game. Grew up on these babies.

Alien Vs. Predator/Knights of the Round- Great beat 'em ups, and quite long. Just love 'em.

1941/Gradius(R-Type,Life Force)/Viper- The holy trinity of shooters.

Radiant Silvergun- The greatest shooter of all time.

Dungeons and Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and it's sequel- Power Word Kill. 'Nuff said.

I ran it on the PC via emulator but I removed it. Since then I found a mod (Tunnels of Doom Reboot, you can find it with any search) that updates the graphics and would love to try it out.

I totally forgot Bushido Blade! I loved that game, especially 1, it was so brutally sweet. I used to love doing the 99 ninjas thing. That was PS1 right? Can I play that on PS2 or on PC somehow?

You can definitely play it on PS2, since it's backwards compatible with the PS1! I wish I could find a copy of that game, I only ever played the demo, but it was pretty fun!

You know I was just going to post the Gold Box Games, I played them to death. Lucky I read through the last couple of posts first. =)

And Day of the Tentacle was fantastic. Funny AND Fun!

Sovereign Court

Alright, I was just thinking about them today: The Quest for Glory series! Who didn't have copious amounts of fun playing these games!

Being a thief was just so solid. It's too bad that the series is done.

I was amazed to find out that they had the theme of the entire series pinned down from the beginning: each game represented an element, a cardinal direction and a season. So the first game represented Spring/Air, the next Summer/Fire, and so on. The only exception is the third game, which was more of a bridge connecting 2 and 4.

Pretty neat! I wish I still had a copy of these. It's times like these I hope that Good Old Games.com gets off to a good start so that we can start seeing these games republished!

Whoa, whoa. Freehold- Baldur's Gate 3? Do you mean Throne of Bhaal expansion or is there something I'm missing?

I know one of the designers for BG 3: The Black Hound was working on porting it into a NWN 2 module, but I don't know if he actually finished it or not or if one can play through.

Super Streetfighter 2 Hyper Fighting was the best beat em up evah!

Wipeout was the best racer.

Icewind Dale was the best RPG.

Super R-type was the best scrolling shooter.

Mario Kart on SNES was classic for two player action.

PS1 Final Doom was the best for Death Matches and Co-op 1st person shooting.

:)

streetfighter II, arcade version.

Oh no, I mean the expansion pack....But now you have piqued my interest. What was Black Hound supposed to be about?

And another game I love- TIME KILLERS! Hit all 5 buttons and kill the person instantly! How can you go wrong???!?!?!?

Tenchu Stealth Assassins was quite good for sneaky murder goodness.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert - love and hate. it reminds me I should be out there designing & building Forcefield generators instead of fiddling about with D&D.

~sighs~ Let me see... The following games have sucked so much time out of me that I would have my PHd by now if it were not for them (and being so weak).

Civ I-III, SMACx, CoH/CoV.

Cilization I-III,
Sid Meyers Alpha Centauri,
City of Heroes / Villains.

Nameless, I hate to sound daft, but the deeper I delved the more there was to read. I had to pull up and get back to work before I found things I could use.

There's some really promising stuff in there but I haven't felt bright enough to sort out what I need to know. You've got me digging back in there now though to pick up where I left off. Thanks for the reminder.

BTW, Shiny... I also played Morrowind for... well, forever. Oblivion is pretty grand, as well.

The curse of my generation. Pokemon Yellow. That, or the new HeartGold which is indescribably sexy.

Fallout 3

X-Com: UFO Defense
[Years of my youth were spent sending squad after squad of hardened soldiers hunting after aliens. Of course, once you research mind control, power armor, and heavy plasma, you have the game won. Still, brings back awesome memories.]

Ravenloft: Stone Prophet
[Man, this game was the s**t in elementary school. You could get a wemic and a sand troll to join your party...you dungeon-crawled through temples and pyramids (one of them was inhabited by fire breathing giant toads)...and the last boss was a crazy powerful mummy cleric(ruler of his own demiplane)]

Menzoberanzan
[Same as above except you explored the length and breadth of the Underdark with your boon companion Drizzt in order to kill a matron mother. Good times]

Man, DOS RPG games were so much fun!

More recent games:

Baldur's Gate - I LOVED this game
Planescape Torment - I'm playing this game now. This will probably be my 5th time hopping through the planes of the multiverse. God, this game is like playing through an awesome fantasy novel.
Baldur's Gate II - Unforgettably awesome. Better than the original. One of the best games ever made.

More recent(er) games:

Dragon Age: I bought an X-Box 360 to play this game because my laptop could not handle it. I loved all the NPCs.
Mass Effect: Pure video game brilliance
Mass Effect 2: Extremely well-polished. Awesome experience.
Bioshock: I'm not normally a FPS fan, but this game was so atmospheric and intelligent; I could not put it down. Plus, I enjoyed all the Ayn Rand references.

10) Half Life: The best 1st person shooter I have ever played.
9) Age of Empires: Just addicted me more than any other RTS.
8) Eye of the Beholder 2: Awesome dungeon crawling goodness
7) Final Fantasy VII: Flawed and repetitive sure, but by god was it pretty...
6) Civilisation 2: Like crack but more difficult to quit.
5) Knights of the Old Republic: Epic awesomeness with the best twist of any game ever...
4) Mass Effect: Almost the perfect game. Totally amazing.
3) Baldur's Gate: Just on a different level to anything that came before. Took RPG's to a new level.
2) Elite: (Showing my age now :)) The first game that didn't involve high scores or levels. It's concept was a full 15 years ahead of it's time. Oh and it was fun too...
1) Mass Effect 2: Perfect. Just perfect. Amazing visuals, tight, entertaining gameplay and characters that you genuinely care for. It's rare that a game meets my expectations, this one shattered them.

Wow a lot of RPG's there. Who'd have thunk it?

1. God of War 3
2. God of War 2
3. God of War 1

there are no other games with this level of awesomeness in them

Tough tough choice between Chrono Trigger (SNES, not DS) and Planescape: Torment. Think I'm going to have to write this one off as a tie.

Top ten:

1 and 2) Chrono Trigger and Planescape: Torment
3) XenoGears
4) Final Fantasy VI
5) Final Fantasy IV
6) Final Fantasy V
7) Super Mario RPG
8) Neverwinter Nights
9) Cave Story
10) Chrono Cross

Honorable mentions: The rest of Final Fantasy, Golden Sun, Lufia, Grandia, TerraNigma, Breath of Fire, Castlevania, Mana series, and others I'm likely forgetting at the moment.

From what I hear, Dragon Age would be on there if I'd played it. The lack of multiplayer turned me off at the time it came out.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Master of Orion 2
Age of Empires 2

Yeah, I'm pretty annoyed that MOO2 is incompatible with Windows 7. Gonna have to build a custom Win 98 machine just to be able to play it again.

A really tough call...

Herzog Zwei
Final Fantasy II (in America)
Phantasy Star I
Mass Effect (and probably 2, haven't played it yet :( )
Return to Castlewolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Space Hulk: Vengence of the Blood Angels
Medieval II
Baldurs Gate
Final Fantasy XI (my first mmo, what a grind fest, but I love that game even today...sigh.)
Contra (NES) I will always have time for contra...

and probably many more...

Not in order...

Console
FFIII(SNES or VI on PSOne)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Xenogears (PSOne)
FFVII (PSone)
FFX (PS2)
DQVIII (PS2)
Metroid Prime (GC)

PS3 (this needs its own list as I consider it another golden age of great games)-
Uncharted 1 and 2 (perfect 10s from me in both games, i mean wow)
Dead Space (best sci-fi survival horror ever made imho. Every level was fantastic, creepy from start to finish).
Resident Evil 5 (franchise is going more action than creepy for some time but this game was fun as hell to play through).
Batman: Arkham Asylum (2nd super hero game done right, see my PC section)

PC Oldies
Mechwarrior 2 and Ghost Bear's Legacy (DOS, my favorite soundtrack ever)
Descent 2 (DOS)
Crusader: No Remorse and Wing Commander III (DOS, I miss Origin games)
Tomb Raider 1 and 2 (DOS, though cant remember if 2 was dos or windows)
Quake 1 and both expansions (DOS, I loved playing modem to modem co-op with my pal back then).

PC newer
Dungeon keeper (always wanted Bullfrog to do another one)
Freedom Force (best superhero game imho)
Baldur's Gate Series (still mad that the dark elf cleric left my goody goody party after awhile and after I decked her out with awesome gear to boot).
Planescape: Torment (Best D&D game Ever!)
Star Wars: KotOR (didnt care for Obsidian's sequel)
StarCraft (Egads! even spent alot of time on BattleNet with pals, then we drove to dunkin donuts and discussed our online matches for hours)
Unreal Tournament (heavily addicted, joined league play at Provinggrounds.com waaaaaaay back)
Dragon Age (Reinvented the CRPG wheel)
WarCraft 1,2, and 3 (another fantastic Blizzard RTS)
Call of Duty 1 and its expansions (the sound was fantastic, possibly the most immersive battlefield sounds ever and non-sci-fi/fantasy shooters are not my bag).

On Mass Effect 1....
I liked the game alot but noticed combat irregularities. Sometimes weapons just seemed to not do enough damage, making some missions overly difficult. Wrex's personal mission comes to mind. Getting through that warehouse door-like entrance gauntlet sucked and then making any headway into that building after that turned me off. It seemed like they could pretty much two-shot me while I had to empty clips into them. Maybe it was my team, dont know. After several attempts on this side quest I abandoned the game.
On other missions my weapons seemed to do decent damage. The Bring Down the Sky DLC was fun though abit too long for its particular story.

For me, it's a very tough fight among:
- Final Fantasy VI
- Final Fantasy VII
- Chrono Trigger
- Xenogears

I don't think I could ever decide...
