Morrowind/Tribunal
Oblivion/Shivering Isles
Daggerfall

Pretty much any of the Elder Scrolls games is at the top of my faves.

For Elder Scroll fans Bethesda have released the first book set in the Elder Scroll universe The Infernal City by Greg Keyes.

ah! Daggerfall and Oblivion, I'll add that to my list. I played the hell out of daggerfall back in the day.

While I agree that Final Fantasy VI (which I still call III) had the best FF story to date, FFVII was the first game to draw me in so much and get me so involved with the characters that I cried. The music from the game still fills me with near euphoric bliss whenever I hear it and the majority of my iTunes is filled with OCRemixes from VII.

That game will forever stay at the top of my favorite list, despite the fact that better games and stories have since been made and told.

With that said, other favorites...

  • MOO2 (so glad to see this earlier in the thread!)
  • Shining Force 2 (the first game to ever really hook me. This is a close 2nd to FFVII)
  • Cyborg Justice (played this constantly with my younger brother - that freaking long jump in the first level aggrivated the tar out of us)
  • Chrono Cross (the music primarily made this game an instant favorite of mine. I've never had Glenn in my party though - I just can't leave Kidd behind. Even though I know she gets better, I can't do it! Argh!)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (when I got all the Choas Emeralds and went Super Sonic for the first time... man that was indescribably sweet)
  • StarCraft and Broodwar (tanked Trig because I'd be up til 3 or 4 playing every night. Loved the old 7 Seals Guild... man, what sweet memories)
  • Halo (only because I felt totally badass when I'd sit down at the lunch table on campus and people would be talking about some jerk "holywing" who kept pistol sniping them and was so hard to kill... such a fun ego boost)
  • Ocarina of Time (Time Travel + Zelda + haunting and catchy melodies = win + win + win - loved this game, really wish it had aged better)

There are surely others, but these'll do for now.

Glad to see Nethack was mentioned. I probably have thousands more hours in nethack over the years than any other video game and I've still never come close to beating it.

The SSI Gold Box Games of course, especially Pool of Radiance.

Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy for the NES.

Mechwarrior has delivered a quality experience from numbers 1 to 4.

Baldurs Gate, but I feel that the original is so much more self contained perfection than any of the sequels.

Neverwinter Nights as a persistent multiplayer campaign tool, but not so much the single player adventures.

I'm still in the middle of my first campaign but Dragon Age is the first and only engaging single player RPG experience I've had since Baldurs Gate was first released.

Team Fortress Classic & Team Fortress 2 - still the best fps multiplayer mayhem around.

Scorched Earth - classic old school multiplayer mayhem. Not sure if this has been mentioned yet. Scorched Earth.

+! No, not +1. +!!!!!!!

And Mechwarrior 3. With a Dark Ages expansion.

There can be only one.

>Myth II on-line demo<. Not the full game, but the demo which ran on Bungie's server circa 1998-1999. The full game was fun, but just ok.

The demo was a lightweight client, and it was an inspired piece of game coding. You could log on with a nick, and on a battle field meet up to three other human-controlled armies. The image of that battle field, a high center bordered by water to the west and forests to the east, is burned into my mind's eye. At the top of the high center was a shallow pool of water. Very well rendered warriors would slaughter one another for control over it, and win the right to plant my flag in the muddy center. I easily spent over 300 hours gaming inside that world, and met and fought players from both the U.S. and European countries.

Each battle would last no more than 20-30 minutes. An army was composed of a handful of different unit types: knights, archers, dwarven grenadiers, etc. The number of individuals in each unit varied, some had up to eight individual soldiers, and some as few as two. A command could be given to a whole unit, which could be trusted to move and attack in a coordinated way, or to each individual soldier. The composition of an army was wonderfully balanced, and with just a little practice a player could coordinate the units to cut like a surgeon's scalpel, or hit like a giant's hammer.

In-game chatter was crude, rude, and vicious. Voluntary membership in the online community was a violent, murderous existence. In each battle, I wanted to keep my soldiers alive and well, but would sacrifice a life in an instant if needed. A well run battle, with fluid execution and few losses, that ended with the annihilation of the enemy was a euphoric experience. There were also rabid head-to-head battles, with the purpose of setting up the pecking order of our generalship skillz.

Did I learn anything from the experience? Yes; small unit tactics, movement, economy of force, use of feints, bluffing, and how to manage the effects of the fog of war. All of which I still use in different forms today.

My overall rating for the Myth II on-line demo: Spiritual

Shadow Lodge

Resident Evil (GCN/Wii)
Silent Hill 3 (PS2)
Ico (PS2)
Metroid Prime (GCN/Wii)
Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (GCN/Wii)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Bionic Commando: Rearmed (PS3/360)
Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure (PC)

In need of a remake:
Metroid II: Return of Samus

These lists made me realize I've forgotten about a lot of my favorite games, which seem to be too numerous to list...or I have a serious addiction...

Same with the rest of us. It's really more a list of what games have managed to stick in your head through the years. I love a lot of these other games too and I'd gladly replay them if I didn't have FF13, Fallout 3, and Oblivion waiting for me....

Are you playing Oblivion on PC or console? If you're playing on console, but have a PC, I can't stress enough how amazing it is on PC with mods...it probably extended the game for me for years and years...so awesome.

Haven't started yet, and it'll be on the 360. I have a little bit left to do on Star Ocean: The Last Hope before I start a new game (I just need to win the last Bunny Race and fight the Ethereal Queen). I might just put it aside and try to start one of these this weekend, favoring Oblivion or Final Fantasy.

Easily...
World of Warcraft: I've never logged so many hours on any other game. When it first came out, when Onyxia (the black dragon) first flew overhead, what a rush... I'm surprised more people haven't mentioned this, but maybe everyone is just burnt (or emo'd) out. :)

Dragon Age: Could be my favorite RPG. Much love to "dog"! This is a very nice game and I've only play 30% of it.

Starcraft: Still kicks azz, even today.

I'm going to give head nods to "X-Wing Vs. Tie Fighter", "Dark Forces 2", "Vampire Bloodlines", "Baldurs Gate", "Planescape" and "Command and Conquer (original)". Oh and "Heroes of Might and Magic" (all 4). I don't know why I like that game, I just do.

I'm not sure why people are so nostalgic over some of those old RPGs. With the exception of Planescape, they pretty much all suck by todays standards. I know, my brother actually loaded in Curse of the Azure Bonds recently and we had a good laugh.

Anyone remember that one gold box D&D game where the game ended with a text message? Hahahaha.

You're not the 1st to say that. Why will it do that?

1) The game is too linear for a FF game.

2) You don't have much control over what or who your party is until 80% of the game is over.
3) All you really do is push buttons for 10 chapters of the game.

I will admit now that I'm in chapter 11, it has become a bit more fun. But you'll enjoy Fallout 3 more.

Huh. In the 2+ years since my post, I've played a bit of Fallout III. Actually, I've played a lot of Fallout III. So, new and improved list:

* Fallout II
* X-COM: UFO Defense. Incidentally, this is the one game I wish someone would update with more polished graphics. The newer X-COM games just do not do it for me for some reason.
* Fallout III. Best new game in ages.
* Master of Orion II. No idea why I didn't include that the first time around.
* X-COM II: Terror from the deep

Honourable mentions to Civ II, Fallout I, the Baldur's Gate/Icewind Dale games and the first two Steel Panthers games. And while I don't care much for shooters, I thought both Max Payne games were pretty cool.

Now don't go throwing stones at me an stuff, but I've felt that the Final Fantasy series of games have been very linear since...oh I don't know, after 7 or 8. I haven't played XII, which I want to badly, but seeing FF IX and X...they were very linear games from what I remember, but then again I could be wrong. In regards to gameplay I feel that the series has been pretty uninspired with the options available to you during combat. I think they need to spice it up some, at least according to my tastes. The Jrpg market is pretty into its staples though.

*Picks up stone, looks at it, puts it down, finds cream puff, lobs*

With FF X, to defend my all-time favorite, things are linear till you finally get your airship and can move around to work on sidequests without having to walk back to previous areas. The fact that you couldn't physically move it around the world was a let-down, I admit. I barely remember IX, I thought it had some ability to let you explore. Much as I hate to admit it, X-2 was better in the free-exploration aspect than X. XII has some opportunities for exploration, too bad they generally get you killed.

Mac, thanks for the info, but it already sounds a bit like X in those regards. What'll matter is the story and the characters, which are what keeps me playing FF games, as well as the sense of wonder.

Strangely enough that isn't the first time that's happened...

Ok for FF X, I didn't get that far into it, but I did feel really restricted. Now I am a big fan of the series, I feel what they get right is story and characters...I just wish they'd open it up for more exploration, but I guess you have to sacrifice something to do that. Still wanna play XII badly :)

XII looks gorgeous, don't get me wrong. But the characters annoyed me to no end, except for Balthier (and Fran). The AI for your PCs (you only control one) is generally fine until a long fight starts, and then it's idiotic. Getting the powerful items in the game isn't a matter of finding them or questing for them, it's pure luck and you have to have the right stuff equipped. Leveling doesn't influence your power level as much as it used to; I was slaughtering the final dungeon of the game but the final boss drove me ballistic. The summons are pretty but worthless. To me, the worst in the series as it only has graphics to recommend it.

In No particular order:

1. Final Fantasy III (SNES) I love this game.
2. Suikoden II (PS) truly under rated game.
3 Silent Hill 2 (PS 2) scared the crap out of me
4. CoD MW 1+2 (PS 3) Ive never liked FPS until I played these.
5. Planescape: Torment (PC) What can I say that hasnt been said?
6. Goldeneye (N64?) Actually this was the first FPS i liked.
7. Warlords (2600) Oh yeah, My bestie and I still break this out once in awhile.
8. Final Fantasy (NES) on the NES Dragon Warrior sucked. Ultima sucked even worse. This was the first good rpg i ever played via video game.
9. Altered Beast (arcade) the first Arcade game I ever beat. It only took me ten bucks.
10. GTA 3 (includes vice city and San Andreas) I wasted alot of my life on these two.

Really? The summons?? If you did them right, they whopped alot of arse.

But 12 was kinda meh. It was very pretty and it was the first one I didn't conquer (do everything).

13 is WAYYYYY more linear than any other FF game I've ever played. I wasn't looking for a sandbox game, I know my Final Fantasies, but when I don't have ANY control over who I use or who is in my party until I'm 85% through the game, it annoyed me.

And wait till you fight the Behemoths.... >:(

Really? I never got the summons to be really useful, even with a strategy guide and gamefaqs to help. They took up time and didn't kill things as quickly as my party did. I never got the last 2 though, because I couldn't reach the next to last one with my level 84 party because the monsters kept killing me and I just could not get better equipment for them.

I'd heard about the linearity. We'll see how well I'll deal with it.

And I always look forward to fighting behemoths. What's so bad about them this time? Do they still drop Meteor on you when they die? Or do they counterattack like crazy? Both?

Ooooo, I just remembered a few more games I loved...

Ogre Battle for the Snes, I loved that game, and Vagrant Story for the PS1; never really caught on but that one was one of the more interesting ones for me.

Liberty's Edge

I was a fan of the old Sierra Online games:

King's Quest 1, 3, and 4 - I never played 2.

Space Quest 1 & 2

Quest for Glory 1 & 2

Leisure Suit Larry and the Land of the Lounge Lizards

Police Quest 1 & 2

Old arcade games I loved:

Venture
Berzerk
Pheonix
Defender
Gorf
Star Castle
Rip Off!
Crossbow
Frogger
Galaga
Pacman
Battlezone
Street Fighter series
Mortal KKombat series
Hippodrome
Gladiator
Xenopphobia
Mach 3
Donkey Kong
Centipede
Dragon's Lair series

and a whole bunch more I'll think of later. ;)

I have concluded that we all have great taste in video games based on the number of games I've seen here and remembered fondly;)

Yea, everyone's list has had games that I was like "Oh yea, that one too", which would make my "favorite games" list wayyyyy too long :)

Nope, no Meteor.

But they do a TON of damage to you and they regenerate.

You will almost kill them and they will stand up, pull a weapon out and go back to full health.

Really? How come?

I personally enjoyed being prevented from over-leveling. It's the one thing I hate about RPGs - sometimes I'll do an interesting side quest and then everything is too easy. I personally don't enjoy easy games - I feel like I'm wasting my time if I'm not, to quote The Simpsons, "Keeping every brain cell blazing to outwit my invisible enemies!" ; )

It's OK. I decided to start Oblivion instead and I'm enjoying it immensely. The fact that I talked myself via Speechcraft into a level was amusing. Thankfully I'd also been doing Alchemy and Acrobatic stuff to give me some variety in my skills! FF13 can wait for a while.

Oblivion is a great game. Just don't do as a friend of mine did. He wanted to open a lock, so he did open lock spell so many times that he went up a few levels. The game decide how tough the opposition should be based on your level. So when he went into his first oblivion gate he was slaughtered.

Oblivion is in fact the only Elder Scrolls game I've "completed". Daggerfall was one of my first game on my first computer (first one I paid for myself and didn't belong to my dad). Love all the Elder Scrolls games.

Have to go back and try Arena some day. But right now I need to play the heck of Super Mario Galaxy 2 until tomorrow when Star Craft 2 comes out :D

I did a little Arena already and might do a bit more. Made it up to the 1st rank at levels 3-5. Not too tough so far, the 3rd opponent was an archer that I ran down and enjoyed hacking to pieces.

Thanks for the warning about the leveling of foes. I've seen that before (FF8), so I'm not surprised to see it turn up in another RPG. I hope to go a good ways before I deal with my first gate.

XIII is very linear, but honestly only a bit more so than X was. The story is great, the graphics are beautiful, the characters feel very natural and have believable relationships with each other. The music is noticeably not Nobuo Uematso's work, but it doesn't suck. On my list of Final Fantasy games it ranks just below X and above anything else since VII. (For reference, my personal favorites are VI and IV, probably in that order.)

Edit: One of the best things about FFXIII is that the male characters are actually masculine. Not the weepy emo male heroes we had in the last few games.

Hard to choose.

I would have said the BG series (1 and 2, plus all expansions). I still feel very strongly towards this choice.

However now I might have to actually lean in favor of Dragon Age Origins. That game was fantastic as well and did feel like a successor of sorts. Plus the more mature atmosphere was nice. Of course BG series had mods which were often neat.

So I would have to probably back one of those two.

I also have a soft spot for the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance series as well as Champions of Norrath, both on the PS2 because they were multiplayer and I got to just sit down for hours and play together with my wife. Just good memories there.

gotta keep in mind I was a *gasp*...console gamer until the late 90's so alot of the PC classics released before that I had to play way after they were release

#1: Castlevania symphony of the night: what can I say Alucard rules, and castlevania should have been a side scrolling RPG from the get go.

#2: the BG series (1,2, throne of bhaal, and I include icewind dale I as well) fun and unforgiving just as AD&D should be.

#3: Super Metroid: nuff said...

#4: unreal (and unreal tournament) first FPS I got really hooked on.

#5: Left 4 dead series: best zombie game ever.....

#6: FFIV (FFII on SNES in the states): first RPG I ever played.

#7: Halo 1: nothing like lugging around 4 Xboxes to play 16 man.

#8: Counter strike: a mod gone gold...

#9: Soul caliber series: Tekken style fighting with swords.....

#10: Super Mario Bros 1 on NES: crazy plumber who eats mushrooms to get bigger...Americans will buy anything...lol

Darklands, a low-fantasy masterpiece set in medieval Germany.

I agree about Darklands. It is available from http://www.gog.com for $5.99

Well worth a try. I played it to death.

3 way tie for me between ff4,ff6 and a little game called lufia 2.
Ff4 is by far my favorite of that line having beaten it roughly 18 times.
Ff6 does have the better story plus the opera ofc.
And lufia 2 so bright and colorful, great monster designs and puzzles. if you havent played it, first off shame on you, secondly go play it right now.

While i was typing that i thought of a few more 16 bit classics
chrono trigger
Secret of mana
7th saga
Brainlord
Wanderers of Ys

Man i love the snes king of the console rpgs.

I miss the days when square and enix were seperate companies, squenix makes me sad.

*edit* how could i have forgotten about A Link to the Past, link the only elf worth a damn. Also one of the few left handed heroes i can think of in video games. We are not monsters, just misunderstood.

Hey, another person who's played Ys! =D

Dark Archive

Whoa, well as long as we're resurrecting threads I might as well chime in :p

In no particular order, my favorite games are:

- The Half-Life series (especially 2 and Episode 2. Oh my god.)

- The Thief series, especially The Dark Project & The Metal Age. These games simultaneously filled me with terror and wonder as a kid. The world is immersive without ever giving away too much, and the level of detail put into the levels was something you rarely see in a game. Plus, it was my first taste of steampunk!

- Morrowind. I love the Elder Scrolls in general (although Oblivion & I have a tenuous relationship) but DAMN this game is good. I can't wait to replay it with the graphics overhaul one day :3

You should have picked Duke Nukem Forever, since no one else will ever, ever be able to say, "No, I played that, and it wasn't very good." I'm sure even the so-called "development team" isn't able to say that.

Anybody else catch this bit of prophecy from 2008?
