I've heard Pett's maps are QUALITY. We're talking Rand McNally stuff.

Yeah, and Pett labels all of his locations with perfect calligraphy.

I mean....they're not just maps.....they're "experiences" when Pett draws them.

Can we send maps as part of the original 800 word open call submission?

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, so um wow...

I am still doiing this, but I don't think it broke through my never published mind that we were talking about 30+ encounters.

4 encounters per day, 32 encounters... 8 days in the wild...

I can do this

Nope. There are like 9 creatures in the MM that are WotC IP.

It won't help you win and it might instead actually hurt your chances of advancing. So don't bother. :)

Anything OGL. It's best to limit your use of non-core monsters, though. In fact, in the 800-word thingy it's probably best to avoid mention of non-core monsters completely.

I was planning on that. Just wanted to get things straight in my head ahead of time. And I was just wondering what the best OGL stuff out there is.

I've found the Tome of Horrors book series really good for OGL beasties.

Alas, no a-picture-is-worth-an-extra-thousand-words cheese!

Would it be a good idea to think about using locations that could be represented with GameMastery maps - not necessarily calling them out in the 800 words, but keeping an eye on which could be worked into the plot? Some folks think that kind of product placement is cheesy (e.g. Wizards adventures specifying which D&D minis to use for each adventure), but I like having new ways to use something I already own or pointers for stuff I could pick up to enhance the play experience.

Anything OGL.

*cracks open his Book of Erotic Fantasy*

Addendum: It would be really really awesome if us newbies got to see the outline to say 'Conquest of the Bloodsworn Vale' just to help us out.

The only way I've ever had to write an outline for official uses meant following all those crazy roman numeral and capital letter rules and such. I have no idea how to add maps into that equation =p

Who is reviewing the queries? Is it a committee of Jason + Mike + Jeremy (ie. those that have GameMastery in their titles) or ???

hmm... maybe I should have asked this before I sent in the query... I could have incorporated more fiendish dinosaurs and gnome ninjas into the adventure... maybe created the "gninja" as the new monster, since ninja's aren't OGL... ;-)

May 2008, I think.

Yes, it's a very aggressive schedule.

Don't enter if you can't write that many words by the deadline.

If you win but you're late with your final submission, expect to never work for us again.

So don't be late. ;D

Not to sound cocky, in fact it is more wishful, but my birthday is in May. I'll actually be 35 this coming year, so getting my adventure published would be a heckuva birthday present. *chuckles*

You could always do what Phil Reed did and re-imagine one of those beasties, like he did with the Mind Flayer, via the Possessors that he created.

They fill a similar niche, yet are different.

Anyhow, I'm only sporadically a monster guy. So your mileage at this sort of attempt may vary.

Well, that's my entry in. Of course, with exactly 10 words remaining, I had to fight the urge to include an OotS reference.

I actually have words left? Then allow me to say -

I'm still not convinced I made the right call.

Right! I'd stick with Advanced Bestiary and Tome of Horrors, if I were you. Or even if I were giving out advice. Which I might be.

If you see a GameMastery Item Card you like and want that to be the McGuffin, we're certainly okay with that (with one exception, but I'm not sure I'm allowed to talk about that). As far as maps and stuff... that's something we've also been debating. Keep it in mind, I guess, but don't stress out over making things fit. And don't bother wasting word count on pointing out that kind of thing. :)

Actually, I would like that, too! I'm to write an adventure one of these days, and I have no idea what the outline should look like. The only other adventure I ever wrote for publication was only 5k words long so I didn't bother with an outline.

Coridan wrote:

If we switch to 4e (and no, I'm not saying we're going to switch), this is going to be one of the last 3e modules we put out.

Yes. For the first round we're going to do it with a blind-review format to make it fair (since Jason and I both have several friends apiece sending in their applications and we want to minimize bias).

The dinosaurs wouldn't help you (that's Jacobs's thing), but the gnome ninjas would. ;D

Can I ask what email address to expect notification from? I want to add it to my address book to make sure any (I hope) notification gets through my spam filter.

Also, Mike, you recommended staying away from non-OGL monsters. One of my monster ideas involved reinventing a monster from real earth mythology, but a similar monster exists in one of the Monster Manuals, should I still stay away from it then? I know that other monsters and gods with similar circumstances have been reinvented for Pathfinder/Gamemastery, but I want to know how big this issue is. I've already started rethinking the query without the monster in question, but I wanted to be sure.

That's fine. We actually like that, to be honest. :)

798 words and I'm done! Good luck to everyone - and for everyone who entered, I hope you buy the module! For everyone who hesitated, it was worth it just to write the submission - both to share in the creative process but also appreciate how hard our favourite authors work. I am really looking forward to hearing about everyone's ideas after the submissions deadline, and to future open submissions too!

Cheers

It is my plan to give feedback to all of the queries that get accepted. Due to the volume of queries, I doubt I will have the time to tackle that for all the queries. For those of you who are curious, we will announce the final number sometime after the first round is in the books.

I realize it's getting rather close to the deadline and I might not hear back before I have to hit the submit button, but:

1) If I plan to team up with a friend to complete the final module, should I put his name as a co-author on the open call submission? (I'm guessing yes.)

2) When exactly is it due in? The PDF says 11:59 AM, which would mean one minute before noon PST. I have seen a few people say PM in this thread, and midnight is the conventional deadline for mass submissions. I will assume noon until I hear otherwise, because it both earlier (and thus safer) and is the printed deadline, but if an extra 12 hours is allowed, I wouldn't mind hearing about it.

Question 2 answered.

I can probably answer those two:

1) Yes; put your friend's name on the open call as co-author. Note that counts as both your submisison; you nor your friend can submit a 2nd adventure.

2) Send it in before noon. If your submission is so close to the wire that the difference between 11:59 and 12:00 is critical... well, let's just say that it's not a contest for who can submit their idea as close to the deadline as possible.

Put another way, there's no way for you to predict your clock being that close to ours. I wouldn't cut it that close to the wire if I were you... I'd try to beat the deadline by an hour at the least.

Another important thing is that emails are not instantaneous, at least not always.

I end up doing phone support with customers sometimes, and send them emails with information that just isn't really feasible to give out over the phone (ie. long urls, detailed intructions, etc)

You'd be surprised how many people think that as soon as they hit send it *always* arrives instantly in the other person's inbox.

In short, it can take the better part of an hour in some cases for an email to arrive. Not likely, but it can happen.

I would however, that it was not the difference between 11:59 and 12:00 that I was trying to split, but rather between noon and midnight. 12 hours is an extra proofreading/rewrite cycle when working with a partner via email. Anyway, it's in your hands now. Good luck to everyone and I hope that I make the next round.
