Doesn't really do its job

1/5

This book is fine as a standalone "facts about Riddleport" book. It does that pretty well.

The problem is that it's also the players guide for Second Darkness. It does that, for the first book of Second Darkness.

By book 3, Second Darkness is an entirely different adventure than the one the players guide talks about, to the point that the players guide is actively misleading about what the adventure is about and what kind of character you should make. If you make a character expecting to be doing morally grey stuff in Riddleport, you are in for a very rude surprise when the AP abandons all of that and changes tone and setting completely.

An RPG Resource Review

4/5

The first part of this work is in effect the Player's Guide for Second Darkness, and contains what you'd expect. The campaign starts in Riddleport (of which more later) and so we discover which races are most prevalent therein, as residents or visitors, and what people of the various classes might be doing - all to help you create a character suitable for the campaign. It also brings to the fore traits, which enable characters to have advantages and edges specific to the campaign without needing to know what they face - if it's here as a campaign trait, it will be useful somewhere along the line. They also help in building background and fleshing out the character, and so as well as campaign-specific traits there are more general ones to choose from as well.

The next part of the book serves as an introduction to the city of Riddleport. Third largest in Varisia, it's a den of thieves and tricksters and organised crime is rife. Starting as a pirate haven, it is now a true frontier town with all the opportunities and lawlessness that usually entails. There's an overview of the way the city is governed, and of its appearance and layout, the sort of thing that an observant person could pick up in a few days and which would, of course, be well-known to a native. This rounds off with some common slang and a couple of unusual poisons.

The remainder of the book has a few useful things like the Liberator prestige class, whose role is to free the wrongfully imprisoned. As they consider slavery to be wrong, there's the potential of conflict with practitioners of that trade, as well as kidnappers and other such lowlifes. Those of a religious bent might be interested in Cayden Cailean, a deity who is patron of both bravery and beer! Mages will be interested in the 'cyphermages' which flourish in Riddleport, and can learn a few new spells, while there are some usful items magical and mundane for those who like delving underground in caves. Finally there's an NPC called Lavender Lil.

Overall an intriguing and useful collection, especially if you'll be visiting Riddleport!

Hey just thought I'd that the "Hero's Brew" has a cost to create of 750gp and a selling price of 1,400gp, at half the base price for raw materials would only be 700gp or a base price 1,500gp.

Wow, that looked a little messy, but in the end I think there was a minor error in pricing.

My concern with this is sharing with players; I have two of them but significantly more players. I'm not going to buy a full six of these, though (as I have done for the other player's guides) and am I right in presuming that the pdf of this can't be shared with the players (for normal copyright reasons)?

Scarab Sages

is there a pdf of this available? I like these products because I usually have a pdf to go along with the print.
thanks

Look at the product options. Under the print is the pdf cost.

Also if you subscribe to this product, you'll get a pdf copy once the physical item has shipped, btw.

We don't generally mind GMs sharing essential information with players in their gaming groups, but please ensure that you don't ever share our PDFs in a way that's publicly accessible... and keep in mind that if your players publicly share a PDF you've entrusted them with, it's *your* personally identifying information that we'll find, so you'll be the one responsible. (Yes, this *has* happened, and more than once.) It's far wiser to share material with them either as excerpts, or in print form.

And best to convince them of the need to subscribe themselves....Or at least get them hooked on planet stories....

hI, first post here. This question concerns second darkness (which i lkove)...Will we see any miniatures of the characters & creatures in the adventure? Particullary the driders:D

Anywho, with the driders capable of breeding I roll to see which eggs are "normal driders" & which are drider spawn---if i get a chance, i'll post a pic of the different spawn:)

Another price problem: Luthier's Rapier is a +1 holy rapier with some extra abilities, but its base price is only five grand. Normally a +1 holy rapier would be eighteen grand, and this one has added extras. I don't know how much this sword should cost, but surely it's more than it does.

you might refer to this post on pricing for Luthier's Rapier.

Most of the other player guide's for adventure paths are now free pdfs. Was it intentional to leave this one at $7? I've been using the player's guide as a samples to choose which adventure paths to pick up.

This is a full 32 page book of original content in the companion line (now the 'players' companion' line) rather than a pdf-only guide with half the pages that is designed to promote/support an AP.

It comes from a time when Paizo was trying out different ways of providing players' guides.
