Scaly Doom

Monday, October 2, 2017

Hello and welcome to this week's Pathfinder Battles: Maze of Death preview! This week we are looking at scaly horrors from the swamps, bogs, and other dark and scary places. To start this week, we have the Lizardfolk Warrior, a common medium. This miniature is based off of the art from the Pathfinder RPG Bestiary, and I think Wizkids did a great job changing the pose and keeping it looking awesome.

Next we have the Lizardfolk Mireborn, an uncommon medium. This one is based off of art from Pathfinder Module: Ire of the Storm and helps highlight the variety of appearance in both coloration and stance that all of our creatures in Pathfinder possess. As an alternate sculpt to the Warrior, I think this one fits the bill.

Finally, we have the Deep Lurker, an uncommon large. This beauty is based off of art from the Wake of the Watcher the fourth volume in the Carrion Crown Adventure Path. You may recognize this creature by other names, such as Lobster Monster, Chuul, or Old Man of the Sea (probably not that one, as I just made it up). I love the sea life that has taken up residence on its carapace.

Check back next time for more Maze of Death reveals!

Yay lizardfolk!

I'll take the deep lurker or chuul. Mostly because it reminds me of a session where the party's druid was also the cook. And she cooked everything. Including chuul. She scored a nat 20 on the cooking check plus bonuses and ranks in cooking. It was apparently palatable for all. :)

I really like the alternate coloring, Dark green and yellow, on the Mireborn. It was something I didn't know I wanted. It would be awesome to see lizardfolk in future sets with coloring/shapes as varied as their real life animal counterparts.

Three solid additions to this set. I’ve always had a soft spot for lizardfolk.

The Deep Lurker is an interesting take on what I know as a Chull. I have cautious optimisim that it will become my go to mini for that role.

I like the two Lizardfolk and their rarity.
The only Lizardfolk we had from PFB that i can think of, is the one from Heroes & Monsters (set 1).
I wonder if we´ll get an additional Lizardfolk in this set - a "Lizardfolk Artillery" would nicely round out these two.

The Chuul is a useful addition, as it features in lots of old Pathfinder adventures and recently in Ruins of Atzlant.
The rarity is perfect.

Now that i have seen all eight uncommon larges, i like all but the Ice Devil. I only wished we had one more plant creature.
Well, maybe the last large rare will be one?

The only thing i still don´t like, is that we havn´t seen 40% of the minis in the set, which is only 3 weeks away from being released.

If the actual lizerdfolk minis have half of the detail that these renders have, then they will be great. I would love to see the chameleon-headed ranger from the Monster Codex. That one is hands-down my favorite lizardfolk.

Thank you!!! So happy that Lizardfolk are finally getting some much needed love! I hope there is a shaman or spellcaster of some sort coming up.

Would like to see that from different angles, looks impressive. I assume the colouring isn’t gold but rather a neutral beige colour?

The lizard men are a welcome addition, I think I prefer the first, primarily because it will fit in with my existing lizards.

Man this is such a good set.

It would have been nice to see the Deep Lurker from an angle other than straight in. It’s hard to figure out exactly what is going on there with the torso, spikes and legs.

Ask and you shall receive!

Very many thanks. He is magnificent! And, uncommon. I can’t wait to get my hands on a few of these.

Can we get a side view too? :D

And while you’re at it, how about a render with a character firmly clutched in one of his claws, because for table use that is the MOST important feature! :D

It seems that the minis blog has been permanently moved to mondays (which i like).

The very nice Rick Kunz (thanks for the rear view pic) has said, that we'll see the two huge elementals, which make up the case incentive, in the minis blog on october 16th. :-)

So i guess/hope we'll see some of the missing creatures before that on monday 9th and the six dressing pieces on october 23rd. ;-)

Paizo is closed on Monday 9th, so it might mean that the 16th is the next minis preview blog.

Here's a preview:

Wizkids - Pathfinder Battles: Maze of Death

Wizkids started uploading product images to their official gallery. Thus far only box art is on display but what's curious is a change to the case incentive... when did the Huge Water Elemental get swapped out for a Huge Fire Elemental?

Thank you Kubla Klaus.

Damn, that "Fire Elemental Lord" looks bad, far inferior to the D&D one.
I ordered two incentives from my flagstore, because i was under the impression that it contained an Air Elemental (which looks good) and a Water Elemental, which was shown at PaizoCon.

Seriously, there was conflicting information from Paizo about this:

First, it was supposed to be Air & Fire, but that got changed pretty fast to Air and Water.
And now, two and a half weeks before release it´s back to Air and Fire?

I hate to say it, but the PFB blogs have really gone downhill.

Hmmm... While I’m excited about the prospect of a huge Water Elemental, I’m not in such a hurry that a Fire and Air are disappointing. I’m actually planning on getting all four. And, I kind of like the form of the Fire Elemental Lord. I already have a few of the War of the Dragon Queen Huge Fire Elemntals, which work fine as a “generic” huge. This new huge is looks more distinct, befitting the title of Elemental Lord, with villain type features. It also seems to be much more in line with all the Pathfinder Battles fire elementals produced so far. I will happily get one, possibly even two case incentives for Maze of Death.

By the way, the way the Fire Elemental Lord fills its huge base it is going to be enourmous. It should tower over the WotDQ version. They could easily represent the differences between the Greater and Elder Fire Elemental which are both huge.

I like the air elemental lord. I like the fire one as well right up until I have to look at those weird red spots on its head. What are they meant to be? They look so out of place.

The Fire Elemental Lord does look a bit smaller than was depicted on the box side. That is a little disappointing.

Looks like the Fire Elemental Lady would almost fit on a large base, diameter wise.

comparison next to the Troll Champion would be interesting.
if it is not bigger and WizKids complain that these two aren't selling, there is no helping them.

War of the Dragon Queen #20 - Huge Fire Elemental

I took measurements (enlarged the pictures to make the bases the same lenght - 10cm/4 inches).

The new Fire Elemental Lord mini will be 1 inch higher, but not broader than the old one.

Against the Giants #9 - Thunderblast Cyclone

The new Air Elemental Lord will be a little smaller (0,5cm or 1/5th of an inch), but pretty much double as broad (old 7cm/3 inches, new 14cm/6 inches).

Personally i like the new "Air Elemental Lord", but hate the "Fire Elemental Lord".

Not pleased with the incorrect information given previously. I don't have a problem with the model itself, but I was pretty excited to get the major missing mini in my collection filled out. I ultimately want 4 of each size, but thankfully I've got some huge ones of fire and air frm DDM, so i guess I only need a couple of this set.

I actually like the fire elemental, as long as the paint job matches the smaller ones. Hard to tell in pictures.

For the record, the War of the Dragon Queen elemental is... lame compared to Paizo's elementals. I've got it and... meh. It's one of the few minis I own that I applied additional paint to in an attempt to improve it. Even then it's only bland.

In regard to the fire elemental render looks, not unexpectedly, cleaner. The render gives it a more translucent look as well as making it look larger. The actual mini is muddier in appearance but overall I like the unique shape and pose, except for the weird red splotches on her face, and I’m going to assume we’ll get the earth and water in the next set.

It is my hope that the elemental lords at least dwarf their Shatered Star large brethren. I’ll certainly be comparing all the elemnetals once I have them in hand.
