Friday brings the smell of fresh plastic wafting on the winds, a sure sign that it's time again to preview some digital sculpts for October's Deadly Foes set of Pathfinder Battles prepainted miniatures! As we prep for PaizoCon next weekend, we're heading into a big week for Paizo, so I wanted to take the time to focus on a couple of "big" miniatures in the set—namely two of my favorites!

Here we have the Ankhrav Drone, a new name for a classic creature found on page 15 of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Bestiary. The story behind this burrowing, bug-like monster's origin is quite interesting. The standard version, with a name gate-locked by our inability to include the Open Game License on the bottom of every figure, also was saddled with an illustration that wasn't too inspiring, and that didn't seem to me like it would make a good miniature. Still, it's a very useful creature in general, and eventually I want to make sure we make every creature in the first Bestiary (if not all the others), so I had a lot of impetus to make the figure, but knew we'd need a better illustration (for minis purposes) AND a new name for the creature. Enter the Pathfinder Campaign Setting book Belkzen, Hold of the Orc Lords. That book introduced the Ankhrav, a Huge cousin of the classic Bestiary monster, and positioned it more as a brood queen for the standard Large version of the character. It also had a very cool illustration that, when coupled with the re-do we put into the Pathfinder Pawns Bestiary Box created the new look for this creature. I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out, and look forward to having this guy burrow his way up from under my player characters! The Ankhrav Drone is a Large figure at the uncommon rarity.

The Gynosphinx is a classic dungeon creature that we've somehow not managed to produce in more than 10 Pathfinder Battles sets. I think we've been waiting for the right piece of art, and with this version, we've finally got it. Sure, she's a bit Liz Taylor, but I'd hardly call that a problem. Ahem. Anyway, the Gynosphinx is a Large, rare figure.

And that's all I've got for this week. We will likely NOT have a Publisher Preview next week, as I'll be at PaizoCon with the rest of the Paizo staff. I WILL be revealing some new figures at the Preview Banquet on Saturday night, though, so keep your eyes on the Internet to see if you can't find some camera phone photos before we formally share them here after the convention.

And if you ARE coming to PaizoCon, don't forget the 9th-annual Miniatures Trading Afterparty in the hotel bar immediately after the conclusion of the convention on Monday. I'll have piles of Pathfinder Battles goodies, and it's a great chance to swap doubles with other miniatures fiends in the community. Plastic, metal, painted, unpainted. Bring it all! Dump stuff you don't want anymore for new stuff you never knew you wanted. It's one of my favorite parts of the convention, and I look forward to seeing many of you there!

Until then (and after), I remain...

The Ankhrav Drone outshines the artwork in the Bestiary. I almost wish he was common since I'll need as many a six.

I really like the Gynosphinx as well. The human characteristics have been too subtle on many of the past sculptures.

This set has been terrific so far, not a bad mini in the bunch.

Liberty's Edge

A sphinx! Nice! I was just thinking that I needed one.

Will there be a PaizoCon repainted figure? And for those unable to attend will there once again be some on the web store?

I like the Ankhrav Drone - glad it's not a rare.. I'm not a big sphinx fan to begin with, so any sphinx is a tough sell for me - so I'm glad it's a rare.

For other miniatures enthusiasts, if you liked the Kraken produced in a kickstarter by Dungeon Crawler Miniatures, they are kickstarting a 8x8 Behemoth right now that looks pretty amazing.

I love the Ankheg ahem Ankhrav!
The Sphinx is ok, i guess - one more PFB version i´ll add to my D&D ones but great for Mummy´s Mask and people that don´t have one.

I´m very glad that this set closes some gaps in the Bestiary (1) collection!

Have fun at Paizo Con, i´ll be hunting the pics down on the weekend and will post them here. ;-)

Glad to finally have an actual gynosphinx! ^_^

I didn't know there would be minis trading at PaizoCon... I may have to find some space in my packing for minis.

I think typically they do the mini trading on the last day of the Con, but things may be different.

Erik said in the post that the trading will be immediately after the convention, which is when it normally is

Erik, if the sculpt and paint jobs live up to these pictures this is likely to be my favorite set yet! An excellent collection so far :)

I just received a pm from Wizkids on facebook saying that the july release of "Dungeons & Dragons: Icons of the Realms Set 5" is being pushed back.
They expect an official statement soon.
This could have an impact on the release date of the "Pathfinder Battles: Deadly Foes" set.
I'll keep you posted.

Well this sets at 100%. So far every mini is a winner for me, so I'm really looking forward to this set. I hope they don't delay it...

The same is true for me - i like this set even more than the previous one and want every mini.

The Wizkids facebook moderator has answered that they don't expect the delay on "D&D: IotR 5" to have an impact on the release date of any other sets.

But the release date change of the last one had an impact, so i don't know how much the moderator really knows.

I bought a case and incentive of "PB:RD", as well as a case and 2 incentives of "D&D:IotR:MM" and i like both (the quality of the D&D minis has improved with set #4 but is still not as high as the Pathfinder quality).

I want both sets, but when in doubt, i would chose "Deadly Foes".
I'll definetly buy a case and incentive of DF and some boosters from Icons 5.

The D&D line has definitely shown improvement in quality and PR lately. But they're still a set by set decision, unlike Pathfinder Battles. Let my subscription ride! I'm happy with everything revealed so far for Deadly Foes, and can't wait to see what the "Dungeon Dressing" pieces will be this time.

The set is growing on me. I don't know whether or not a case makes sense yet - but maybe once I see what else is included.

So far 22 of 44 creatures (plus the 2 HUGES) have been revealed.

With the "Pathfinder Adventure Path #20 IRON FIST INVASION" focused partly on Hobgoblins and some announced in the description text, i bet Erik will reveal some at Paizocon.
Sadly i couldn´t find pics so far.

Erik has just revealed that some of the new art from the "Curse of the Crimson Throne Hardcover" will make it into miniature form!

Can't find any pictures of the pit fiend or the Decemvirate member. Any links? Pics?

So far there havn´t been any.

It was just written on twitter.
But Paizocon is not yet over and i´ll keep looking.

Spoiler:

-The "Salamander" is a medium common mini.
-The "Decemvirate Member" has to be a medium rare (that´s an educated guess).
-The "Pit Fiend" has to be a large rare.
The "Book of the Damned" dressing piece is a medium rare.

I've seen the digital sculpts - they're pretty excellent. ^_^

Once I'm home from PaizoCon, I'll see if I can get you better info (assuming someone hasn't already done so).

"During the Banquet, Erik unveiled a number of new sculpts for the line of Pathfinder Battles miniatures. However, folks are going to have to sit tight for his preview blog this upcoming Friday for images of the just-announced sculpts from the upcoming Deadly Foes release."

4 new pieces of art from the "Curse of the Crimson Throne" hardcover have been shown and it has been told that some would make the transition into miniature form.

The 4 pieces are:

-Trinia Sabor
-Queen Ileosa on the Crimson Throne
-A Rakshasa
-Blackjack, a Vigilante

My guess is we get the Crimson Throne as a large dressing piece and also Blackjack.

I also guess that the Hobgoblin Leader on the back of an Aurox shown in the "Ironfang Invasion" promo art is one of the (4?) Hobgoblin minis we will get in this set (the others being "Hobgoblin soldier", "Hobgoblin Archer" and "Hobgoblin Alchemist" from the Monster Codex.
Maybe even the "Hobgoblin general" (samurai).

The Decemvirate member is very similar to this image, if that helps. ^_^

I got some good and some bad news.

The "D&D Icons of the Realms: Storm King's Thunder" set will include 14 different giants - some of them HUGES (on large bases)!!!

There will be male and female versions of Storm and Fire Giants (and more).

The bad news is:
This set will be released on september 1st 2016 (official release date).

That means Deadly Foes will almost certainly be moved from the intended october release date (as it happened with Rusty Dragon Inn).

In the past there were 3 months between the sets.

Deadly Foes has originally been intended to be a summer release but has been moved to october.

Either it will come earlier (july 2016 being the earliest possibility) or - and that is more likely - it will be out in december 2016 or january 2017!

I'll keep you posted.

Silver Crusade Contributor

I hope it's not moved closer, especially if it sells as fast as Rusty Dragon Inn did. I was glad to see Pathfinder Battles releases slow a little.

I hope it gets moved up to July if anything. Pushing it back to January would be a YEAR between sets which is kinda crazy.

Dark Archive

http://dnd.wizards.com/products/tabletop-games/miniatures/minis-storm-kings -thunder

Here is the product page.

There will be 45 different minis (44 in boosters plus 1 case incentive plus invisibles).

Hill giants, Fire giants, Frost giants, cloud giants and Storm giants have been mentioned but there will be a sixth sort of giant.

The most likely new Deadly Foes release date would be 3 months after this D&D set, which would make it a december release...

Dark Archive

There are 4 creatures on the box art of "Storm Giant's Thunder":

-Thri-Kreen (medium 4-arm insectman)
-Kleef Keenric (medium paladin/fighter)
-Fire Giant (huge male with mace on large base)
-Lymrith (huge female Storm giant)

There is also an image of a second male Fire Giant with flaming sword in one hand and flame in other).

Images of a male and female cloud giant.

Also the (Gargantuan?) Incentive is called "King Gru".

Dark Archive

Correction.

It's "Chief Guh" and it is a female hill giant of gargantuan size that got so big/fat by eating all the time.
No kidding.

Dark Archive

Also it has been confirmed that some of the giant minis (storm and cloud giants) are 5 1/2 inches tall (15 cm), which is 3 squares on a flip-mat/battlemap.

That means HUGE size (even though the bases are probably large).

Also we get a male & female version of:
-Hill giant
-Stone giant
-Frost giant
-Fire giant
-Storm giant
-Cloud giant

and more. 14 different sculpts in all.

I think that is incredible.

Silver Crusade Contributor

I'm glad that the people who want giants will be well-served. ^_^
