Two for the Road

Friday, April 1, 2016

I'm leaving for a much-needed vacation to the ruined ancient cities of Mexico in about an hour, so I'm going to make this week's Pathfinder Battles preview short and sweet. The sun is shining, I've got packing to do, and this is no time to be at work.

That said, I'm absolutely thrilled with the quality of sculpts WizKids has been sending us for October's Deadly Foes set of prepainted plastic gaming figures. This latest pair—a diabolical pair if I've ever seen one—bring dark flames to my wicked heart.

Two maces. A wicked beard. A giant upside down pentagram to properly honor Lord Asmodeus. What's not to love? The Priest of Asmodeus makes a great rank-and-file evil cleric, but he's dynamic enough to be a specific, credible villain. The figure is a Medium piece slated at the common rarity.

This cool Thrune Enforcer is the perfect compliment to the Priest of Asmodeus, a great shock-trooper for an evil army or even a member of an evil town's city watch. Heck, if you look past the glyph of the evil empire Cheliax, she'd even work well for a darkly garbed, mace-wielding player character. Either way, you don't want to see her coming at you with that mace held high after you unexpectedly interrupt a candle-lit ceremony! The Thrune Enforcer is a Medium, common figure.

And with that, I say "GRACIAS" for your interest in and support of the Pathfinder Battles line. I'm off work next week, which means no figure preview next Friday. I WILL return in two weeks time with even more cool minis to show off, however, provided I don't take a nasty tumble down a Mayan pyramid.

Until then, I remain...

Whilst more humanoid figures is not something I'm ever going to get excited about, I like the colour scheme of these. I think they'll mix in well with both the grey maidens and the cultists.

I think the minis are cool sculpts. Unfortunately, I can't afford them. Still, I look forward to the posts about the minis since something interesting is always in the entries.

No, no. Get the details right:

Boo for Chelaxians! Yay for Chelaxian minis! ;)

Thanks for putting these up before you left, Erik. Enjoy your holiday.

Is it wrong of me to be more interested in your Mayan vacation than the minis? The mini's are pretty cool and all, but come on! Pyramids!

So these are the "evil soldiers" from the description text of DF.
I am normally not very excited by human (or elf/half-elf) minis, because i have tons of them from D&D.

That said, the 2 House Thrune minis from Legends of Golarion were pretty good and the quality of most humans in Rusty Dragon was better than ever.

But i will never understand the depiction of casters with two hands full. ;-)

Have a nice holiday, Eric.

Why bother with the hassle of casting when the appropriate application of two maces will solve most problems?

Wtb Red Mantis Assassin in this set.

I worry that because some folks have made this such a deal, that once the miniature does come out, it will be a disappointment. I almost don't want them to make one. Almost.

I want them to make two. At least. (Plus a leader.)

After the Gray Maidens, I want to make sure I have enough.

That's the very same concern I have. Although to be truthful I've waited for one for so long I'm sure I'll be happy. would love a couple, 2-3, maybe even 4 as a focus group like the bugbears and ghouls. Maybe it even is one of the groups, alongside the hobgoblins. Two with their iconic helmets on in action poses (one with a sawtooth and a two weapon weilder), a leader holding his/her helmet under one arm, sawtooth sabre in the other one could be the incredibly cool artwork that depicts one in a cloud of red gas - nice transparent plastic effect. Maybe we'll also get a nice medium or large mantis in a cool red colour to go along with them. That would be 5 in a set though.

I've also mellowed on these two. What I initially took as meh I've decided I feel a bit better about these. At the commo rarity I should bet 4-5 out of a case and so have good repaint fodder.

Still hoping for geniekin minis.

Eric wrote that he had to cut some angels & devils from this set.
That means some remain.
Which ones are most likely to be in this set?

-The Astral Deva is the safest bet.
Great art (Bestiary page 10), CR 14 is high but not too high and we had a decidedly different one from D&D.

-Bearded Devil is in it as indicsted by the preview art.

-Erinyes propably won't be as it is in the actual D&D set.
-Imp, see above.

-Bone Devil is a strong possibility because of certain Hell's Rebel's enemy and a CR of 9.
Also nice artwork (Bestiary page 74).

It was a good time to take vacation, what with the release of Monster Menagerie. But now I am ready for some more Deadly Foes news!
