FW!!!!!
So if I read your post correctly
AoO 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31... damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Crit Confirm 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (19) + 11 = 30... damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
He then follows up with a series of thrusts and slices.
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21... damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23... damage 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 This hit sent you to -1
1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25... damage 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6 This hit sent you to -7.
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10... damage 1d8 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6 This hit by virtue of you being unconscious.
I will double check the assassin's feats tonight. If he has spring attack he would move on to Heather after incapacitatng you, but I don't think he does and he already has a captive to interrogate. So it's hard to rationalize him holding back.

I do have an lingering sense of guilt, because I had pulled my punch with Emerion -- dying in round one of combat because :
1. he did something entirely reasonable (went upstairs alone in an empty house)
2. lost initiative and
3. failed a single saving throw
Would not be a good death. Since the RMAs are there to gather information about Vencarlo or his friends taking one captive at the beginning of the fight was plausible.
But giving that break to Dabbler and not extending the same option to you seems a little unfair to me. So in the named of meta-game fairness, I will leave it to you. The assassin can switch to non-lethal after the attack that fells Kenan which will leave him deeply negative and unconscious.
Or we can talk about new character introduction. There's a key NPC that's supposed to aid the party for a bit very soon and return later in the adventure. She's a female cleric of Zon Kuthon. But any character with strong ties to the church of Zon Kuthon would do.
Of course an entirely new PC from your own imagination also works.
Let me know your preference.
On a separate note, that last series of strikes the assassin delivered was brutal. To score the AoO and land all 4 blows was just nuts. Despite that, I was surprised when you said Kenan was down. I thought the RMAs were just sandpapering you.

I feel all right about a minor spoiler here. Urban ranger, while good right now, might not be the best choice long term. We're starting the third chapter of the AP. After this chapter, the AP will take the party away from the city and into the wilderness for two chapters before returning to the city.
A [Serious mental gap here] marine is a possibility here if you are looking for a rangery warrior with ties to the city.
The character choice is in your hands, however. I'm just spit-balling.

Here is Kenan's replacement, Varlis. Crunch done. Fluff to come.
Bounty hunter in Korvosa who chases them down even if they run into the Cinderlands.

Sorry. I went to a wedding last weekend. I thought I'd have opportunity to post sometime, but things didn't work out that way.
Just a heads up. Unless "dungeon" qualifies as urban terrain, that choice will prove useless for a long time. You may want to change it now and take it later.
Browsing quickly through the crunch, looks good otherwise. I'll have a deeper look later.
Given where we are in the adventure, I won't need local contacts for Varlis right now. The easiest way to work him in immediately is if he's on commission right now.
Would he be adverse to working for the Kuthite? Alternatively, he could be working for Lord Arkona. Or even Commandant Endrin, the late leader of the Sable Company. Other options are Zeonbia Zenderholm, or the Abadran Church.
Whoever he's working for, he's been set to stake out Vencarlo's house. And he's just just noticed the increased smoke pouring out the chimney and leaking in small streams through the roof, since those four adventurers went in.
Actually it doesn't matter who you choose, break in on the party now -- let me know who he's working for and I'll feed you the relevant back-story.
How's he feel about the city? At some point his allegiance needs to transfer to the party. His goals need to line up with theirs.
Looks like you still really need to gear up too.

Endrin works. He's paying you to find Neolandis Kalepopolis, the Seneschal of Castle Korvosa. By law and long tradition, the Seneschal must approve any new Monarch of Korvosa. The Seneschal is also the ultimate authority for the Sable Company. He has been missing since King Eodred died. He gave you two leads -- Vencarlo Orsini and Salvator Scream.
When you checked Scream's place you were ambushed by two Red Mantis Assassins. You put one down, but were badly wounded and barely made it out. Inexplicably the second assassin didn't pursue. Since then you've been playing a cat and mouse game with them and with a mysterious small woman in tight black leathers with very large hair. You're staking out two of them inside Orsini's place. Four adventurers went in a few moments ago. Very soon after more smoke than usual started coming out of the chimney, then some started leaking through cracks in the roof and you could see flames through a window. That leaves us at the current moment with the party.
Endrin was still alive and healthy when you saw him a couple days ago.

Paging Mr Spicer..Paging Mr Spicer..
Neil...I have a question about AP writing..when you design an adventure do you as the writer determine the tactics for the monsters in an encounter or is that the developers job?
The reason is that I'm in a PbP Snows of Summer game and the Tatzlewyrm encounter seems to be..broken.
We are discussing it here I realise your time is limited but perhaps you could drop by and offer a few pearls of wisdom?

Backing up to the Mantis encounter....
I didn't juice it at all, but I really expected you guys to take them down much easier. A couple things hurt you more than I expected. The cramped quarters didn't let you gang up on them. Emerion was isolated and neutralized to start the encounter. (You guys haven't failed many big saving throws.)
Props to Kenan for dashing upstairs to rescue Emerion even though he was badly hurt himself. That's heroics.
Props to FW for taking it well.
Killing Kenan was tough for me too, I do genuinely like your PCs.
French Wolf |
Kenan was a risk taker and not really a team player in many ways. He didn't spend any time buffing or the like before heading upstairs and that proved his undoing. One on one he couldn't stand up to a Mantis.
Varlis is 75% archer and 25% melee, but above all he is more of a lawful team warrior.
Personally I detest things like resurrection and DMs fiat to keep PCs alive. I played in campaigns where death is irrelevant and the game soon begins to pale after a few encounters.
But I do have a soft spot for reincarnation. That is a fun spell.

I am not a fan of Reincarnation as a player. It can be great fun for a couple sessions, but then how long can you do the previously huge fighter trapped in a canary's body routine? Or worse to have your dwarven paladin come back as a hobgoblin? Unless relief was available, I found it just too destructive to my image of the character and would rather roll someone new.
As a Dm on the other hand ....
Dabbler |
Well reincarnation can be amusing...and some deaths are just not nice. My son threw his sorcerer onto a necklace of fireballs hurled at the rest of the party by the possessed rogue to save them all...I really couldn't rule he stayed dead after that kind of heroics when the druid had the spell prepared.
The amusement of the rest of the party at what he came back as was likewise priceless.

So now we have another ingredient in the stew that is Old Korvosa..
Let us review the factions currently engaged here in no particular order
1)The Arkona's
2) The Red Mantis..who may or may not be involved with...
3)Ileosa's minions
4) The Local 'Empire'
5)The Watch and it's allies..ie Us
6)Various Independants
and now..7)The Zon-Kuthonites..oh joy the Hellraiser groupies have arrived

Neil Spicer, you out there?
Guys, Neil's probably on deadline -- he's been quiet for a while. FW's on limited posting til August's end. And I'm already playing one NPC in Laori.
We could put the game on hold til end of August. We can continue with Em and Heather and Laori and I'll dream up something to detain Istas and Varlis. I can DMPC I and V. Or Dabbler and Wellard can adopt I and V until Neil and FW return.
Or there's another possiblity I haven't thought of.
What do we want to do?
