'So the hall ends in a dead end, so we must look elsewhere for an exit.' Usawoti turns behind them to see how many of the Mephits follow. Watching as Inarus speaks to the obviously fiendish air mephit.

"Hey," Inarus tries to speak to the dust mephit lying amid piles of stuff. "I'm sorry about the fireball earlier. I think some of your friends are still alive, so could you take them back to their families?" He leaves the unconscious dust mephits next to the pile, while keeping an eye on the dust mephit hiding amid stuff in case he looks like a hungry mephit that will eat his fellow dust mephits.

If no eating or conversation occurs, Inarus will go down the air mephit tunnel.


"W-what fireball?!" asks the dust mephit, nervously.

"W-what families?!" he continues.

"A- a- are ya... recruiting?!" he asked.

"We didn't knows, we swears!" he protests. "'Sides, if you beat th' others, than ya'd get whatever fam'ly ya want!" he says, worriedly.

Inarus takes out his bracelet, puts it in a corner, making sure the line of effectvis broken.

He tries to put the dust mephit near on the pile of stuff to see if it will trigger the dust mephits fast healing.

"Urm...you mean you guys aren't related?" He asks, slightly puzzled. "Sorry, you dust mephits all look alike to me. Well, you CAN follow us if you want, but please stay quite some way back. We've been running into some greedy things trying to eat us, so you know, I can't guarantee your safety."

If it does
He waits till the dust mephits wake up, then reclaim his amulet and moves back to the hall and goes down the tunnel where most of the mephits fled.

He reclaims the dust mephits and his amulet and moves back to the hall and goes down the tunnel where most of the mephits fled.

Maybe these Mephits are like that, sent here as food and challenges to the elemental s and other things here in the Rune’s” Usawoti looks around, shaking his head, ”What do you want to do with the fiendish ones? If we are “recruiting” or just going to let them join us, do we want to give them some form of expectations?” Looking at himself and then Inarus, ”I mean do you want to, I think they would take it more serious from you."

The dust mephit turns to Usawoti.

"Yo, bud, 'she f'r serious?! Sh's plannin' on takin' on'na other big dawgs an' makin' a fam'ly?!"

He flaps over and sits on Usawoti's shoulder. "****, ya tall freak!" he says, "Y' should'a jus' said th's was all jus' a power play!"

The ones down the corridor shout around.

"He says he don't want nothin' t' get in 'is way!" says the first.

"****, me, you, an' everythin', but she's got the good stuff!" adds a second.

"Yah, that wind!" adds a third, "Plus he ain't afraid a nuthin'!" points out the third. "An' he ate, like, all'a dead'uns!"

"He̴'s͘͜͟ ͘͏t̷̵ot̴͏e͜s̶͜͡ ̸͜͞ŗu̸͜t̡͢h̨les̨͡s͟,̛͞ thou̧gh͠͏!" adds the corrupt one. He also tries making contact with the amulet telepathically, "Milady, do you know how I might, urm stop people from getting addicted to my healing? I really don't want to influence people unduly when I heal them. I know I've been taking you off occasionally, but that's because I really don't want people to get high on my heals! Sorry!"

Then we will return to the dimension we came from. Any who assist us may join us when we leave.”

Pointing toward Inarus, ”Obviously the great dragon does not need your skill at arms. What we need is information about this place. That is how you will earn you keep, and join us in our grand adventure.”

Usawoti looks at each Mephit ”You are expected to be true in word and deed. If one of you is lying we expect the others to root out the liar so we may dispose of him. If you cannot be true then you best leave to survive on your own for we will suffer no guile.”

Looking first at Inarus telepaathically: ”Are you ready to proceed?” and then at the two lighting mephits ”Show us the direction to where our feathered and beaked friend is, what you called the end of the world.”

Not sure who these are? There are three normal air mephits, a fiendish air mephit, a fiendish dust mephit, three unconscious dust mephits, a conscious dust mephit, and an unconscious fiendish dust mephit. The dust mephits are currently going through rapid healing.

There are three fiendish mephits - one each lightning, smoke, and ice - that are unconscious, but stable.

They all look at you with no small amount of confusion.

Then, "Tell that to the others." says one.

"Yeah!" adds the second.

A third adds, "S͏͜t̸̀i͘l̢͜l͢ ̶͜g̀o̢͜ņ̵n̵a̸ ͡h̀a̡͡͡t͠҉e ͢'e̵m,͘ ́th̀҉̸ǫ.͏" he grins, broadly. "An' **̷̡*͟*̡͘ '͝ęm͡ ̢up í͘f̧͘ ̧t̕h̵͢e̶y ͘̕g͜e͘͘͟t̛ ͞i̴͘͡n̛n̵̴̕à w͏a҉̸͠y̷͘̕!͢҉҉"

The fourth mentions, "But, uh, we're totally loyal. Yah."

The dust mephit on Usawoti adds, "'Long as it's not me being eaten alive, or killed to be eaten alive, we're cool!"

The fiendish air mephit huddles in fear.

"No, he wants the feather-beak thing!" says one from beyond Inarus.

"Oh, in that case, you're gonna wanna go to hell." says the dust mephit.

"We already tol' him, ya ******!" says another of the air mephits.

"Oh, well... uh... I'unno." says the dust mephit.

"He says it's not hell!" adds the third one.

"I'm afraid I've got some bad news..." says the dust mephit to Usawoti.

"... you don't know much 'bout us, do ya?" adds the dust mephit on Usawoti's shoulder. "I got s'more bad news..."

The dust mephits slowly wake up from their fast healing.

"Yo, *********!" adds the dust mephit on Usawoti's shoulder. "Wake up and look sharp! There's a new family, an' i's that dragon what apparently ****** you up by way of a fireball or somethin', I dunno - anyway, keep with him and this chump here," he thumbs at Usawoti, "an' keep as honest as possible (******* idiots), an' ya might jus' live ta eat some other mephits what get in th' way!"

The three groggy mephits look around, confused, and head-achy, but shrug.

One asks, "What 'bout th' iceys?"

Another bops him on the head. "******* dummy." he says, "You saw 'bout the iceys."

"Oh, yeah." adds the first.

"Well, 'f it leads ta eatin' and livin', I s'pose I'm in." adds the third.

"But what was th' fireball about?" asks the first.

"Eh, let's say he kilt a bunch'a creeps 'r somethin'." says the dust mephit on Usawoti's shoulder. "Maybe some o' them freaky smokers."

The other dust mephits seem to feel this makes sense.

"****!" shouts the mephit on Usawoti, "I f'rgot! All'a mephits 'r 'equal' now or some **** like that." he adds hastily. "So we don't hate by kind no more."

"That's weird as ****, but whatever leaves me breathin'." says one.

"Yah, but it makes sense." says the one on Usawoti. He points to the cowering mephit in the corner. "That guy took th' oath jus' ta make sure that guy," he points at the very dead smoke mephit, "didn't eat us all. Tried to save that other guy, but couldn't do it. Stupid ******, but I get it. S'nice ta have someone watch'er back."

The other mephits ponder this.

You blow past the mephits behind you, quickly getting back to the central tunnels.

All but the fiendish air mephit follow you - for that one, you hear savage noises as it clearly has started attacking and attempting to devour the corpses again.

There are now five passages you see radiating from this central one.

EXPLORED! The first is, of course, the one you came from originally. No mephits fled this way, and the direction you came from leads to two side passages - one of which had a frozen and well-separated dragon corpse, the other of which had lots of messy corpses - and they hypothetical (but really hard to get back to) place you came from in the top of the tower (where you'd fought some smoky air elementals and a white dragon).

EXPLORED! The second had been inhabited by dust mephits, but extremely few of the surviving mephits of any kind fled down that way. You have now explored that, and added three dust mephits, leaving the cowering fiendish air mephit alone.

The third had been inhabited by air mephits, and a large number of survivors of all kinds had fled down that path - more than any other path, and including those that first fled from Inarus' intimidation, and most that fled the central area. The one mephit to stay conscious after Inarus' fireball - the dust mephit - had also fled down this way, even while swearing vengeance.

The fourth was the one that lightning mephits had inhabited, and the one that the majority of that kind had fled down, as had a few of the different kinds.

The fifth was the one the smoke mephits had inhabited, and the one that the majority of that kind had fled down, as had a few of the different kinds.

Remaining alive in the chamber are three relatively ordinary dust mephits and two relatively ordinary air mephits (all five of whom survived Inarus' ball of illusory flame, if only barely, and only thanks to the action of both Inarus and Usawoti working together), and the four newly-fiendish mephits that had been physically attacking Inarus - one dust, one lightning, one smoke, and one ice.

You head down the tunnel that most of the air mephits fled down - along with the preponderance of survivors, over-all - and find it quickly turning... weird. The air becomes thick and heavy. Not hot, not exactly, but... wrong. Sharp smells infest the place, with sharp ozone, heavy smoke, and acrid fumes. It becomes harder to breathe at some points.

The tunnel splits at one point, sharply angled in two directions. Usawoti notices that it looks like one of the spiked loops of the runes, before. Now he actually has some idea of where they are, more-or-less.

In either direction, there become smudges, smears, and smoke along the walls and floor of the hallway.

There are a large number of vitriolic-looking pools and nasty smells. The other has burned corpses.

"You're all free to go except for the fiendish air mephit, that I need to keep an eye on,"He tells his growing mephit gang, "But please stay a safe distance, I don't think the tunnels are very safe."

Inarus reaches out a claw and tugs the fiendish mephit off the corpses. "Now now, none of that." He lectures the fiendish mephit. "Don't be eating your own kind."

telepathically:Inarus, so we are on the same page, are we taking all the mephits with us as informants and guides or just the non-fiendish ones or just the one fiendish one. I have told them that if they give us information we would free them from this place. Conversely if they don’t join us I don’t think it wise to leave the fiendish one’s alive, and those fiendish ones that do join us we keep an extra eye on. Also, we are going after Shuvuu first and then the key right?

It's all part of the air and gluttony runes. Over-all it goes up and down in various mostly-even amounts, but seems to be going slightly "up" in this direction.

"Ok, ok, we'll try to find you something other then mephit to eat. Do you mind telling me how you got fiendish and all that?" He asks the mephit.

"Milady, I'm not asking you to be cruel. I just don't want anything tagged on to the healing. It would be unfair to those getting healed to like it too much, because it would influence how they feel about me. I believe everyone should have the right to have free will, and not be made to like me because of magic." He tries to explain to the amulet.

Shaking his head at all the talk from the Mephits, Usawoti asks Inarus telepathically "Do you want to go the direction fo the large number of vitriolic-looking pools and nasty smells. Or the direction of the burned corpses, or back the way we came? If I were going to make and assumption." Usawoti nods to the pools "That direction may have some elementals.' And point toward the burned bodies. "And I wouldn't be surprised if that direction has a dragon."

Then, apologetically, "i am sorry to have displeased you so, but i do not understand your concepts; we are doing nothing to negate this 'free will' so-called, and if enjoyment is a curse, it is not one that i can alter about the fleshy kind you are all a part of"

A shorter pause, then, nearly in tears, "i am merely what i am, as are you, and i know of nothing that can change this - i understand if you hate me, in which case perhaps it would be better to give me to another so that i no longer trouble you"

A deeply sorrowful coldness and emotional separation comes across the amulet.

The mephits listen to Inarus with only mild interest, followed by a shrug.

"Look, dude-or-dudette - how can you even tell on these things - whatever the **** they do down there is their own biznus." says a dust mephit.

"Yah: it don't really matter, 'cause they mostly stay down there, and I never go, 'cause it stinks like ****." adds another.

"And 'course this place ain't really hell..." adds an air mephit. "It don't stink enough, and ain't oppressively hot an' **** like that."

"The only guys 'at really do any switchin're tha freaky-as-**** smoke *******. But they're better'n many o' the creepy little ****-***** we gotta deal wit' 'round here, so..." another dust mephit mentions.

"Yah." says another air. "Well, I s'ppose some others come up sometimes, but they mostly don't like it, here..."

"I mean, ****, they kill 'emselves off enough that we don't gotta worry 'bout it much. I think they gots the whole war-thing goin' on with tha pit, or somethin'?" adds another mephit.

"But anyway, it's nice ta meet'cha, Oozey." says his 'shoulder mephit' before turning to Inarus, "And you, too, boss!"

He looks back at Usawoti. "So. 'Oozey What-ey of the Shriek-eerie k'wwwhhhhaaaaa~?' huh? What'd ya have to ****, kill, or eat to earn a name like that?! Sounds pretty hardcore..." he looks on with anticipation.

"Oh, ****! We get to hear a named origin story!" says one of them.

"O̧h̴͜,̛ *̨*̡͞*̀*̕͠,̶̵ y̵̵҉e̷á̷̡h!͞ ̶̛͝Th͝҉e͢s̵e̶̸ ̀͡a̷̢̨re͢ ̸̧a҉l̴͡w͞ays̨͠ ́͡t͜h͠͠͏e͡͠ ̵b̵e̢s̛͢͢t̸̛͠!͞" adds one of the fiendish air mephits.

"***-******'-****, it has been so-*********-long since we heard a good naming story!" adds one of the air mephits.

"Yah! And maybe later we could hear how the boss got his!" says a dust.

"It's hers, ya numbskull!" adds another.

"No, I'm pretty sure he's a-" starts an air mephit.

"ALL-A-YUZE SHUT IT!" adds another air mephit. "I wanna hear naming stories!"

"Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees!" begins one of the mephits.

"Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees!" chimes in another.

"Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees! Nay-ming-store-ees!" the others begin pitching into the chant, using their pathetic little tails, and hands to add clapping and slapping noises to the demand.

"Oh, geeze!" adds the dust mephit on Usawoti's shoulder. "Sounds like ya better make it a good one. You really got this crowd riled up with all y'r big-name braggin'!" he nods, reinforcing the concept.

Present

"Y'r immune to bad smells?! ****! I want that!" says one of the dust mephits (it's impossible tell them apart, really).

There is a general murmur of agreement.

The hall doesn't start out very smelly. In fact, it goes through quite a number of turns before the smell suddenly becomes strongly apparent - and the cause is clear to you both as well: brimstone. Plus, it continues to grow hotter - uncomfortably so.

The air slowly becomes thicker and heavier with the heat and smells, and you start to see disgustingly burned corpses littering the area every once in a while - most not really fried to a crisp, but rather more partially burned to death: fiendish and non-fiendish alike. Most of them seem like mephits, but there are definitely parts that are not from that species, though too badly fractured and broken apart to tell. Most things look more than a little eaten and chewed upon.

Even more disturbingly, the dead aren't always alone - some of them fester into some sort of strange fungi or are used as fertilizer for plants that clearly are unnatural in origin. Soon fungus and vegetation mix to lightly cover most of the tunnel surface, and, occasionally, hangs down from it, or bunches up in slightly thicker carpets.

"Huh. Must've had a cleaning day." notes one of the mephits casually.

"Yah, looks relatively nice in hear." adds another.

As you come to a split (which the mephits inform you both go to the same place - something that Usawoti can add to his mental map to confirm it would look like that), it becomes clear that something is... wrong. Inarus tries to go forward a bit, and suddenly finds he can't breath, before backing up quickly.

It's actually not even remotely obvious - it just looks like air. After a moment's reflection, you realize it's a thing called fixed air - a kind of "dead" air that doesn't support life or breathing. It happens because both directions take a bit of a 'dip' downards... and you can smell the fermentation and rot from corpses and plant/fungus stuff.

Wind wall won't really help, as that keeps stuff back - this is just kind of sitting there. The mephits assure you that there's an "up" on the other side...

The fiendish mephit singing continues rocking and doing much the same, locked in its own little world. It seems not to have noticed the big dragon's question.

The pathway moves for quite a few feet, before sharply splitting again - one into a visible dead-end, and the other joining with a passage into a way that slopes upward. Inarus gets to that part, and nearly slams into the wall of slowly smoking and steaming growth - a putrid-looking combination of fungus and twisted plant-life.

How long do I need to hold my breath before I get to the next air hole? If the whole place is unbreathable, I won't be able to stay there long. Suffice to say I would only stay as long as about 1/3rd my air supply, and check if I could breathe.

Assuming that some of the spots in the tunnel are clear to breathe, then he would be heading up, otherwise he'd be heading back

He thinks a moment more, looking at the fugus on the wall. "If you don't mind ask her if these fungus belong to some of her relatives too."

Inarus quickly scrapes out a five-foot-by-five-foot hole in the solid wall of vegetation above him, shoving the stuff down into the tunnel below.

As he clears away the rubble he discovers with his naganata, even stabbing past the wall, he finds... more all, albeit thinner than the solid outer-layer he just hacked through. A faint waft of air passes through, bringing with it intense heat, and the nauseating stench of brimstone, the sudden burst of which causes him to wildly miss a single strike*, before continuing to bore into the wall behind.

A few more hacks shows him making clear and more rapid progress - you suspect you're almost through the next section.

* This is flavor for rolling a natural 1.

I know with hardness involved I should probably try the lance, but the problem is I can't figure out how you would use a lance to cut down a wall >.<

You wouldn't use a lance to cut down a wall. Even a naginata and earthbreaker are pushing it, but it's fine - I know from personal experience you can literally flatten vegetation and shatter wooden growths (hard as that is), and hacking is a well-honored tradition (I even killed an old oak tree with a machete when I was a boy, because I didn't think I could hurt the tree: I was wrong). Besides, you don't exactly have hedge-clippers, and I've no vested interest in having the game grind to a halt, soooo...

Fortitude for Usawoti, Fortitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15, and Inarus Fortitude: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (13) + 19 = 32

Though ever once in a while the two friends gag on the foul and eye-watering sulfurous fumes, over-all they slowly tear a ten-foot-by-five-foot passage, though it's still not quite large enough for the dragon to squeeze through.
