"A sea voyage it is, then," Arimar suddenly finds he has no appetite and places his half-eaten tea cake back on his bread plate, "But let's have a teleporter on standby that we can reach with a sending or something similar if we need him*. Actually, Ma'am, I was wondering if you have any information - or know who would have information - regarding the forces that guard Hollow Mountain? Other than the reefclaws, of course."

The big paladin places his dainty teacup back on its saucer and adds, "Oh, and thank you for all of your help, Ma'am," Arimar says sincerely, "I don't want to speak for everyone, but I think this new relationship is off to a very good start. I look forward to the days to come."

* Silver raven figurine of wondrous power anyone?

Filuvia smiles. "Yes Gwen, this is going to be a prosperous business relationship. You clear the path, and we'll quarry the stone. I will send all the paperwork to your men, Foreman Daceileum Surly and Senior Carpenter Branarm Om? And I will send the bill to the church. Not to worry, we can take care of the finer points later. And I think that you, Balaster, shall be temporarily relieved of your duties at the Guild, and will be reassigned to this project. I want all the logistics sorted out, transport, a harvesting crew, permits, supplies ..." Balastar's countenance falls the longer she talks, and the more detailed she gets.

"Aye. It will be done."

"Oh, I know it will. Nothing will make me happier then a successful mission.

"As for Hollow Mountain and the Alaznist Step, I confess that I am ignorant in this matter. But there are many in Magnimar that could help. That pathfinder woman, Sheila Heidmarch, Museum of Ages, maybe something else." the conversation trails off a bit as everyone starts to think about what needs to be done.

Let me know if you have more questions or want to move to something else.

"I'd just as soon save a few gold coins and travel by boat." Benaiah flashes a sympathetic look towards Malgrim. "But having a teleporter on standby might not be a bad idea. I'll chip in for the figurine." The large man says, finally standing up from his comfortable seat.

"Perhaps this is a thing I will get better at, or perhaps I'll just let Gwen do all the fancy talking. Seems a tough route for us to pay such a premium for this stone, especially since you need us to clear the way for you, but I'm more interested in getting this business arrangement off on the right foot to argue about it."

I'll have to make sure I've got my touch of the sea powder ready... Maybe I'll get one as a present for Malgrim, poor guy.

"I'm glad that Balastar will be handling matters," Arimar enthuses, "We may have had a rocky start, but I appreciate the man's principles. I look forward to a smoother business relationship." The aasimar looks carefully at Balastar to gauge his comfort. He wonders if it is because of their earlier misunderstanding, or because the issues behind his earlier retraction have not been resolved.

"And, Ma'am, thank you for helping with the information. I think we'll do some more research and get ready to leave. No, please excuse us. It seems we are popular all of a sudden." He gives his host a sly grin and picks up a teacake for the road.

Later...

"So, friends," Arimar turns to his three companions, "It seems we have been personally invited to a dog race. What say we turn up and see if we can't take advantage of the Kaddren's hospitality and meet them at the same time?"

So we've got 2/4 in for the figurine... Gwen, 'Grim?

@GM: Any chance we could just roll gather info or knowledge (local) for figuring out mroe about the Alaznist Step?

At the mention of the ship, the usually unflappable Maglrim tenses up so much that he sends his plate careening into some silverware with a distinctly jarring sound. He quiets himself, and regains his composure, though he still has the look of someone searching for a landline. And one thought does strike him, though he would have to weigh the ramifications to ensure it isn't just his aversion to sea travel. It isn't entirely difficult to note how stiff and silent he holds himself, however.

Later
While out of sight of the House leader and servants, Malgrim lets his guard down as he faces his companions, looking to them with undisguised aprehension as he adds quietly, "Arimar, Benaiah, Gwen... There are few fates I would prefer suffer less than being on a ship. It seems like it is the best course of action towards our goal, but I am unsure if it is my path. I have had thoughts. Perhaps my efforts would best be spent here, in prepartion for the construction with the Guild." He goes silent a moment, and adds, "It isn't just the godsforsaken boat, but it does feel like at this stage of my journey, remaining still for a time may allow me to approach my destination faster. I could keep Balastar in line, as well." He moves to his pack, and withdraws a few handfulls of gold. "I would add to the purchase of your figurine, should you have need to call as well."

I like how we managed to provide a rock solid reason for Malgrim to say "heck no" to venturing forward ;) I hadn't even considered a boat!

Let's clear up some murky waters, shall we.

As the Companions' and the Mindurians' conversation dwindles to mundane topics, like the weather, Filuvia turns to Balastar, "Balastar my dear. Why don't you escort our guests out. I am sure that they have a full day ahead of them.

"And thank you all for meeting with us, and letting us clear up our earlier misunderstanding. I look forward to a profitable relationship between us. Take care, and good luck." She nods as they all rise and stroll back down the hallway.

Balastar turns to the group, "Friends, if I may call you so, I appreciate you all accepting my apology. My earlier behavior, I am regretful for how I acted. But when my house tells me to stonewall you, that is what I do. Glad that the pressure House Vanderale levied against Lady Filuvia has abated.

"Now that we are free to resume our previous relationship, I will need a handful of days to arrange transport, a crew of laborers, and gather supplies. Malgrim, why don't you and your friends head over to the Museum of Ages, find out a little more about what we are up against. In the next few days, if you can spare him, I'd love to have Malgrim's help. What say you?"

The Companions, in their wisdom, defer to Balastar's advice and head towards the Museum of Ages. Occupying a small campus just north of Usher's Hall, several grandiose structures house the histories, findings, and private collections of some of the city's most esteemed citizens. These buildings are the Founder's Archive and Museum of Ages. In an attempt to elevate the city-state beyond merely an aggrandized trading post, the local government has done much to encourage education and the arts. The majority of governmental funds contributed to city-wide enlightenment go toward these two structures' maintenance. Of particular note in the Museum of Ages itself are three of its permanent displays: the ancient Eye of Rakzhan (a magically petrified cyclops eye from a remote island in the Shackles), the Gemstone Regalia of King Chadris Porphyria III (held on public display here much to Korvosa's disdain), and the Lions of Siv (two matching lions, one of red marble and the other of black).

Bypassing much of the Museum's bureaucratic staff, the Companions find themselves in an audience with the museum's curator, Doctor Ernst Landis. "What is it that the Museum can do for you? Hollow Mountain? Why yes, we do have an expert on ancient Thassilonian ruins. What museum wouldn't? Boy, take these fine people to Doctor Archisa Aparna."

A page boy bows to the Companions before motioning them to follow him. Through winding shelves of priceless artifacts, all tagged and labeled, many wrapped in protective casing, the Companions take in the sights and smells of the museum's storage and research facilities. An odd aroma of dust, old, and spice permeates the air, while the dim lighting casts everything in a yellowish hue. Colors muted and shadows elongated, the Companions feel as if they have been transported into another world.

Coming to unspectacular marked door out of the dozens they have passed, the page raps on the door. "Coooommme iiiinnn." come a weazened, frail voice from behind the door. Before the page can turn the knob, everyone can hear a 'CLICK' from the bolt releasing. "My trapppps are disableeeedd."

The page pushes the door open and leans up against the wall next to the door. "I'll wait here." he says.

Upon entering the room, the Companions can see that the room is sparsely furnished. A few chairs, a desk, and a floor to ceiling bookcase that runs the length of the opposite wall from whence they entered. Every chair, and much of the floor is covered with open books, and rolled up parchments. Seated behind the desk is a humanoid man. His skin is a pale blue like crystal clear waters, hair as black as a moonless nights, and white pupils with no iris. The Companions are worldly enough to recognize a samsaran when they see one.

"Please, come in and sit." intones the man as he places a book down. "I am Doctor Archisa Aparna. Who are you and what can I do for you?"

With Balastar...
"There are no hard feelings," the halfing says, soothingly to Balastar. "We don't hold anything against you for... stonewalling... us. You were simply doing right by your house. We had our disagreements in the past, but I think we all recognize it was only business. There were and are no personal offenses taken."

"Take your time arranging transport for us and gathering your laborers," she adds. "There is plenty for us to do in the interim and to prepare for the journey ourselves. And thanks for the advice, we'll start at the Museum."

"Malgrim, lead the way..."

With the companions, before arriving at the Museum of Ages...
"I'm with you, Arimar," Gwendolyn adds along way. "Maybe after the museum we can head over to the dog race and check out Kaddren? Hopefully by then we'll have a better idea what to expect at Hollow Mountain."
Gwen's in for getting a figuire, also. 4/4

At the Museum of Ages, with Doctor Archisa Aparna...
"Doctor Archisa Aparn," Gwendolyn begins, taking a step further into the room. "We were hoping to learn from you about Hollow Mountain and an old Thassilonian ruin, known as the Alaznist Step."

"We only know a little bit so far..."

The halfing then proceeds to describe the details conveyed to them by Filuvia, such as the enormous carving of a woman's face looking toward the south, the countless corridors and rooms honeycombing the mountain, and the expeditions that have not returned.

"We would appreciate any information you could offer on the subject..."

Slightly Earlier (With Malgrim)...

"Malgrim, you're talking like you're not going to come with us!" Arimar taps the hobgoblin on the shoulder with a friendly but harder-than-intended punch, "Wait... you are coming with us, aren't you?" Having lost Olmstead and then Keoki from the group, Arimar is surprised to find himself very anxious about the prospect of losing another.

With Balastar...

"I agree with Gwen, it pleases me greatly that we could mend this bridge," Arimar smiles, "And also that it was the Vanderales and not someone else I know of who was blocking the deal! It does raise further concerns about that particular house... but that's a matter for another time."

With the Doctor in the Present...

"Well, we've actually got two subjects we need to ask you about... first, though, please do answer my friend about what you know of the Alaznist Steps. We're seeking to travel there, but want to prepare ourselves for the dangers we might find," Arimar sees no reason to beat about the bush, "Secondly, anything you can tell us about the Fountain of Bethesda and specifically the magics and masonry used in its construction would be wonderful."

Heh. That's one way to triple the posting rate! ;-)

Doctor Archisa Aparna, clearly missing their introduction, decides that he cannot resist the lure of expounding on the vast knowledge that he possesses.

Whispering arcane words, he opens a drawer and removes a single sheet of bright white vellum. Again whispering the words of magic, he resets the trap on the drawer he had just moments ago opened. This series of events is repeated as a quill, blotter, and ink pot are removed from various compartments of his escritoire.

The writing implements arrayed orderly on his desk, he begins to scratch and scribble his way across the paper. Dusting and blowing the sand off the paper, he rises from his chair and moves over to the room lenght bookcase. Waving his hand and speaking the words of magic, a section of the bookcase begins to waver like the heat waves from the Osirion sands. The image begins to swirl before slowly fading from sight. Where sturdy oaken shelves holding tomes of ancient lore once stood, now appears to be a shallow cave with a humanoid creature standing to its full height of 8-feet. To call it a humanoid is a bit of a misnomer, as it only resembles a human in form possessing two appendages from trunk to ground each a circular tube as thick as a 10-year old tree. The construct's trunk is a solid rectangle, 4 feet by 5 feet, with two slender tube shape appendages dangling at an awkward angle from the top corners. On top of the trunk is a crumpled ball the size of an overly large melon. The entire construct is made entirely of paper, the rainbow of hues ranging from the most pristine white, almost glowing, to a deep buttery yellow. Some look to be as long as the length of a Mwangi constrictor snake, while others are smaller than a man's pocket kerchief. The papers twist and turn as they move across the construct before moving inward.

As the Companions look a bit closer, they can see writing flowing in all directions from one paper to another in as many languages as they have digits. Some of the writing the Companions think they could read, but most if not all the scripts are undecipherable.

Turning to the Companions, Doctor Archisa Aparna declares, "As you may know, we Samsarans live and die and are reborn in an ever continuing circle. Much, if not all, of my knowledge died when I was reborn, but I have managed to record some so it will not be lost. This is not all I know, and it degrades with time, but it is some."

He crumples the paper and throws it at the construct. The paper is immediately absorbed into the mass of papers. A loud sound of papers tearing emits from the construct.

"Oh dear, I had forgotten. If you don't mind." Again Doctor Archisa Aparna taps into his arcane energies and casts a spell.

Immediately, the sound of tearing paper is replaced by a low-rumbling voice.

Gwen wrote:

" ... ain is is among the highest peaks of Rivenrake Island in the Varisian Gulf. It boasts one of the most intriguing Thassilonian ruins in Varisia. Near the summit of the mountain, an enormous carving of a woman's face looks sternly towards the south, half of her visage rent away by an ancient apocalypse; she looks over the ruins of the bridge that, in ancient times, spanned from Rivenrake to Argavist Island. Exposed underneath, the onlooker can see that countless corridors and rooms must honeycomb the entire mountain.

At its foot, lie the aged ruins of what some scholars believe to be the city of Xin-Bakrakhan, the Thassilonian City of Wrath, and once the capital of the domain of Bakrakhan. These ruins are said to be one of the few remnants of this mountainous realm which disappeared into the Varisian Gulf following the destruction of the empire in -5293 AR. The split face near the summit is conjectured to be that of Runelord Alaznist herself.

Currently the mountain is uninhabited by any lawful parties. Due to the difficult waters in and near the mountain, ships no longer pass close enough to the mountain to make it an effective position to help control water trade, though that has not stopped some from trying in years past.

Due to the magical nature of the mountain, many view it as a holy site for users of both arcane and divine magics. At various times, it has been used as a temple or base by those wishing to establish their own holds."

Gwen wrote:
"and an old Thassilonian ruin, known as the Alaznist Step."

"The Alaznist Step is a naturally defensible position of the only land route to Hollow Mountain. Geographically, the environment high on the mountain, and the narrow route up to it, make it a treacherous climb. To date, this pass has been closed for unknown reasons. Those wishing to pass through often have started at the base of the mountains in the Oread village of Northpass. That is the last known, friendly settlement. It is unknown who currently controls the Alaznist Step."

The construct stops talking, but the papers still slide around its gilt-edged membrane.

Any questions before we move to Arimar's queries?

Benaiah tilts his head sideways, curious about the answers to Gwen's questions. He files the information away in his head, at least glad to have some context for what the terrain and area are like, then leans in to hear the answers to Arimar's questions about the specific dangers they would be going in to.

As an almost subconcious action, he begins cataloging the types of tools he might need to get through the treacherous areas they are headed towards.

No questions yet from me... Thanks for breaking up all the info though. Love the paper golem, I have a feeling Ibid might see something like that and fall in love... :)

"Bandits and pirates, then..." Arimar notes with disdain at his assessment of the foes that are most likely to be arrayed against them.

"And my apologies, good doctor, we have forgotten to introduce ourselves." Arimar proceeds to lead the group in some brief introductions, also adding that they are relatively recently arrived here in Magnimar.

"Your insights into the Mountain and the Steps are as impressive as the means by which you communicated them to us," Arimar compliments the samsaran and his golem gratefully, "But please do let me know if you know anything about the so-called 'Fountain of Bethesda'."

That's my RP way of saying no further questions from Arimar. ;-)

Portraits | Tactical | Hollow Mountain

Doctor Archisa Aparna nods gratefully at Arimar for the introductions. "Might I ask why you are interested in these topics. I rarely get visitors that aren't Pathfinders, and I do not see Wayfinders, glyphs of the open road, nor a letter from your Venture Captain. So I must assume that you are working on your own, or for a benefactor.

"I also must assume that these topics you wish information on must be interconnected. I am an expert on Thassilonian ruins, and Hollow Mountain is known to me. As is the creator of it, Alaznist, who was the last Thassilonian Runelord of Wrath. One can only assume that the Step was named after her.

"But this Fountain that you speak of, it is not familiar to me in this life. Mayhaps in another life?"

Once again temporarily disabling his magical traps, he once more writes on his long flowing sheet. Crumpling it up, the tossed paper is immediately swallowed up by the construct.

The construct booming voice once more fills the office, "The Fountain of Bethesda, also called the Pool of Bethesda, was a created pool of water that possessed the ability to heal creatures of their infirmities. Once per day, at a random time, the waters were stirred and the first creature to alight in the water was cured.

"Scholars have debated the origins of the pool, and the entities that stirred the waters. Some believe that the pool is a hoax propagated by the church of Urgathoa to fool people into a false hope, others believe that Sarenrae gifted the pool to a small monastic order that fought a plague in the nearby populace, while others believed it was created during Earthfall as a gift to aid humanity. Too much tradition is embroiled for any theory to be considered with academic integrity.

"Nothing is known of the magics nor masonry associated with construction other than they predate the founding of the current city-state of Magnimar."

Doctor Archisa Aparna swivels in his chair and turns back to the group. "Taking an expedition are we?"

By the way, GM, as Benaiah said: I f*&*ing love the way you're doing his past lives with the golem. Really cool.

"Why we're interested?" the big aasimar strides up to the doctor and pulls off his falchion - still sheathed in its intricately carved scabbard - and holds the angelic ankh hilt up for inspection, "For the Temple of Sarenrae of course! As the golem said, it is believed by the church - my church - to belong to their order. They seek to restore it for the good of all, and we have agreed to help.

"So, yes!" Arimar manfully straps the falchion to his back again, "We are heading on an expedition! Thank you very much for the information... it seems as though you have more than a passing interest in what we're doing though. Would you like to ask something of us?"

Information-wise, I'm satisfied that he has no more to tell - especially with respect to the way he gets his info! It's not like we can pump the golem for extra nuggets of knowledge. Great work all around.

The Doctor looks up at Arimar with his milky white eyes. "Why yes. It appears that I am towards the end of this life, and being a scholar of old Thassilonia, I would like to see Hollow Mountain with my own eyes. Would you mind terribly if I accompanied you? Looking satisfied, nay pleased at the amount of information they have gathered, especially the manner with which it was gained, Benaiah nods his agreement towards Arimar in allowing the librarian to come along with them. A magician could never really hurt, especially if they stayed out of the way.

"Based on the way you got that info, I'm guessing there isn't much more we can find out without heading there ourselves. Say Doc, what happens if you don't survive the trip? This little golem of yours is a pretty amazing... thing... and there is something about you not surviving that just doesn't sit well with me. At least the part where you lose all of your current knowledge. Is there some kind of way we can add whatever new knowledge you gain on this trip to your paper golem here so you can review it in your next life? Maybe you could put a note in for yourself as a reminder of how we helped you?"

Malgrim remains quiet throughout the strange interactions with an even stranger man. Here is one that is suffused by wisdom and knowledge. Would that I could contain a fraction of the path with which he has tread.

When the sagely man finishes his speaking, Malgrim offers him a small bow of respect. "I thank you for the undertanding which you have bestowed upon us. It will serve well in our cause." At the mention of him visiting the mountain, however, the hobgoblins features clouded.

"Anything you can do to help us avoid a lengthy sea voyage would be most welcome! Maybe Malgrim will change his mind and come with us!"

The paladin turns to his companion, a serious look on his face. "Malgrim, I can't think of a better person to have with us on an expedition to find and mine stone. It was true, she very much wished him to stay on, but it was his decision alone and she feared speaking up out of the concern it might bias his choice or cause his resolve to falter.

So she continued looking on in silence, hoping she did not come across cold and uncaring when inside she felt as though her heart could break if her friend, with whom she had been through so much, vanished from her life.

"I have no doubt you're knowledge would be useful to us while venturing to Hollow Mountain," the halfling continues on later. "I would be fine with you joining as our companion along this journey. Though it's my friend's that would most likely be the ones, rather than me, who help keep you safe."

"I know a few magics, and can heal you some if needed, but I'm guessing your knowledge of the arcane probably surpasses my own. So, I'm personally fine with you joining, but then again, I'm counting on the others to take care of me too..."

Gwendolyn doesn't have any further question regarding Hollow Mountain or the Fountain.

Expert from the Museum of Ages

Doctor Archisa Aparna looks at Benaiah. "Thank you young man. It is touching to have just met me but care for my safety and well being. Not to worry, we live, we die, we are reborn. And I have contingencies."

The Doctor claps his hands and a pile of book levitates off a chair and is placed back on the book case. You are worldly enough to know he has an Unseen Servant

"Before we depart, I have some matters to attend to here, and some arrangements to make. In a few days I would be be ready. In the meantime, you should equip yourselves for the journey. I could not give you advice for any material encounters that we have, but you should prepare for the rough mountain environment. It is bitterly cold, and windy, and the terrain is unforgivable. Maybe a pack animal or two to carry supplies. Is this agreeable?" Assuming it is, feel free to make your goodbyes and allow me to choo-choo you to your next stop. Also hand waving any equipment you need under 100 gp. I am not wasting time accounting for it, nor should you. Please feel free to add it to your HL, items like rope, pinions, cold weather gear, ect.

Majordomo of Mistress Lanvi

The Manor
The Companions depart the Museum of Ages and make their way back to their residence. There they find Hepec still in Mistress Lanvi's office with even more paperwork. "Ah, so great to see you. I have much to share with you. Great news, we have taken back all of our establishments and I am in the process of hiring more staff, both strong-arm and service types. I estimate we are at around 70% of our prior business. I took the liberty of taking out a short term loan with a decent usery fee. With these excess funds I can round everything out in a few weeks.

"I also have an update from Khania. It seems that Mistress Lanvi is on the mend, and should be back on her feet within a week. Her cough is still troubling, but that is nothing new. How did your meeting with House Mindurian go?"

With the Doctor...

I'll grab all the hiking gear I'm allowed, and some cold weather gear too.

"Before we go prepare, can you please tell us a little more about how you intend to speed our journey?" Arimar asks as politely as he can, "If we get pack animals and then find they won't teleport..." fingers crossed, "...with us, it would be a shame."

The manor...

"Excellent news, Hepec!" the paladin enthuses, "Your help, as always, is invaluable.

"The meeting with Fulvia Mindurian went quite well, she is very interested in doing business with us. We'll need about 4,500gp to get the amount of stone we need, not to mention the non-insignificant task of clearing the way to the stone... but we've secured some help in that regard from someone at the Museum of Ages. Excellent to hear that the Mistress is on the mend. Hopefully she can help you out with your efforts while we see to that cough of hers."

Arimar sits down, finding himself almost as exhausted with these preparations as he was with combat. "Anything else to report, my friend?"

With the party
Malgrim carefuly considers the questions that are presented to him, as well as the ramifications they might entail. It is true, the Hollow Mountain would be a return to stone, to a sort of familiarity that had been lacking of late. There surely would be danger, but being beneath the earth would bring a comforting pressure.

And yet, the offer to work with the Crafter's Guild appealed to him in a way that he hadn't felt for some time. As much as loyalty and friendship had caused him to cling to his companions, the journey of late had led him further into areas that made him deeply uncomfortable, and not just the doomed ocean voyage. He felt a liability to the mission more often than not in this land of social graces. Perhaps it truly was time for him to walk alone, to find his center.

He looks to them all. "Friends, as much as it pains me in ways simple wounds could not, I believe I will take this offer towards observing Balastar. At least for now, I believe our paths must diverge. What the future may hold, I cannot say. But I can feel this is the right choice, the correct one for me, at least. I thank you for looking past my skin and giving me a chance to belong." He shows a rare smile, though there is sadness in his eyes. "I have made my choice. Yes, I must stay here. Though if you were ever to call on me in need with your metal bird, I would travel the lengths of the earth."

Are you fukcing kidding me? I'll pretend this never happened.

Hepec looks at the Companions. "I am not sure what you all had planned for tomorrow, but we could really use your help, shoring up the business, inspiring the troops, things like that. If you are able."

"Malgrim, my friend," Arimar places his mailed hand on the hobgoblin's shoulder, "You will be sorely missed, but you must go where your heart takes you. We I'll find a way to manage with just the three of us, plus the good doctor. Enjoy your time with the masons. Do us proud and bring us more allies... Dawnflower knows we could use them!" The big aasimar laughs and gives Malgrim one last accidentally too-hard pat on the back.

Hepec...

"Our schedule is reasonably clear for the next few days," Arimar responds, still feeling tired. Perhaps it was Malgrim's departure - however temporary - wearing him down? "I'd be happy to join Gwen and Benaiah in making a rousing speech. I was thinking we should also run some kind of friendly competition - a day of games - for the household to celebrate our victory over the Versades and raise morale. What do you three think? We could announce it tomorrow and plan it for when we get back.

"And, of course, any other more direct help that you need, I for one would be more than happy to provide it."

Portraits | Tactical | Hollow Mountain

The next few days pass rather uneventfully. Hepec takes the Companions from establishment to establishment, spending some time talking to the guards. Amazingly, Hepec knows every guard by name, and is even able to share a bit of personal information about them to the Companions. "This is Licinius. Been with us just over a year now. Pretty young wife, right?"

"Why yyyes ssir." stammers a startled Licinius clearly awestruck and astonished Hepec knows not only his name, but that he is recently married.

The workers fawn all over the Companions, and Benaiah has no shortage of willing companions for the foreseeable future.

Malgrim, begins the following day splitting the time between the Companions and the Guild. By the third day, he only has time for one visit, and by the fourth, the Companions only receive a letter that he is occupied with Balastar and to press on without him. Malgrim - please do write your own exit.

Doctor Archisa Aparn, true to form, sends several letters on beautiful paper every day. His letters are long and rambling, often asking questions that the Companions could never answer.

'... do you feel it is prudent to bring Tenzil's Treatise on Thassilonian Terms or shall I bring Runelords: An Unabridged History of Violence?'

On the fifth day, walking from one establishment to the other, the Companions cannot help but notice a very cat looking cat, acting very uncat-like following them.

Rolls:
I didn't, Hah! Because its MY GAME AND I DO WHAT I WANT!

Arimar always greets the employees warmly and with respect, "A pleasure to meet you. The Versades? It was nothing. We rescued the mansion, but we would do the same for you or any employee who fell afoul of a rival house. You are our responsibility, and should the House's politics put you in danger, you need to know that the four of us will stop at nothing to make you safe again. An attack against those who work for House Lanvi is an attack against us. We will take it personally. That said, try to stay out of trouble, okay...?"

Arimar's answers to all the doctor's questions are generally the same, "Why not bring both? Malgrim and I are strong enough, and I have a Handy Haversack that has some spare capacity..."

As they travel along the street, Arimar turns to Gwen and Benaiah (I'm assuming Malgrim has left by now), "What do you think, our friend Luma from House Derexhi?"

Arimar stops and turns to address the cat directly. "Something we can do for you?" he asks politely.

Portraits | Tactical | Hollow Mountain

As the Companions turn towards the cat, she rears back on two legs and begins to elongate, her trunk, her arms and legs stretching to become Luma Derexhi. "My apologies. I was hoping to see ... I was ... is Malgrim not with you? I was hoping .... to see him. But I do wish to see all of you. There have been no more contacts concerning you, but if there was we shall uphold our agreement. I wanted you all to know that.

"The reason that I am here today is because I heard a rumor that you possess a magical chalice that can cure people? I have a friend from childhood, we were ever companions until he left for studies at Proffesor Reivax's School For Gifted Arcanists. He is not naturally a nice person, but he was my friend. We have ever stayed in touch.

"Recently, his love, something happened to her. She is sick and cannot be cured. I would like to ask you if you would meet him, and if you agree, heal his sick wife." letting out a sigh, Luma is pleased that she managed to get all of the information out.

"I'm afraid Malgrim will be spending a while away from our group," Arimar says sadly, "But next time we see him, we can pass on a message if you like - perhaps get him to meet you somewhere."

Arimar scratches his chin, unsure how to answer Luma's remaining line of questioning. The truth? Not all of it, but no lies. "It is not a magical chalice, but a fountain, and I'm afraid we do not have it, or even any assurances - save our faith - that it will work. We are currently seeking to restore it. The thing is, though, that not just anyone will be allowed to use the fountain. Only those with most need."

The paladin moves over to Luma, "So the least people who know about it, the better your friend's lover's chances. Understand?

"Actually, the best thing for you to do would be to take your friend to the Temple now. The clerics will heal all who come to them. If they cannot heal her, then they will be more motivated to use the fountain when she is well again. Best if she doesn't even mention she knows about it. Does that make sense?"

We are really going to need to prepare the Temple for what is to come... this many people clamoring and we haven't even fixed a single stone yet.

The halfling steps forward, following Arimar's lead and addressing Luma. At first she had been stunned at the presence of the anthropomorphic cat, and even stumbled back in awe as it took the form of the half-elf, only to realize it made perfect sense that it was indeed Luma.

"Do you need something specific with Malgrim?" she questions, finally gaining her composure after the surprise of seeing Luma again. "As Arimar mentioned, he is not with us currently."

"You don't have to say why you need Malgrim, just please convince us that he is not in any further danger in regards to whatever you need him for."

Continuing on, Gwendolyn tries to dig a little deeper into who these people are requesting their help. "Who is your friend, that studies... or studied... at Proffesor Reivax's School For Gifted Arcanists? And just as important, who is his love and what is her ailment?"

"Arimar has the right of it," she continues on, speaking frankly and with a stern twinge to her words. "Your friend and his love would be better off going to the church now, and requesting help. The fountain, which is not even a tangible thing yet, is far more of a long shot than simply requesting healing from the church."

"No one should start confining on the Fountain to fix them... who knows if it will ever work... and even if it did, there is no guarantee any one person will be able to benefit from it."

"I don't mean to be too stern or dismissive, but it is concerning that people are lining up to use a fountain that is-- one, supposed to be a secret-- and two, doesn't truly even exist yet."

Malgrim attempts to contain his stoic exterior in the face of the well-wishes and concern from his friends, his companions. It doesn't take a well-trained empath to sense motive that he is struggling to keep a straight face, and he gives a solemn bow before he turns away, a single tear of emotion running down his cheek.

Luma looks at the Companions. "Malgrim in trouble. Never." her face blushes a deep shade of pink. "I just wanted to see him again."

"But I understand fully what you are telling me, and know that I will never break your trust. It is just that, well, I feel like my friend deserves a chance. A chance to tell you his story."

With that a young man appears from the shadows.

On the tour:

"Ha! Yes my good man. That part is true, Sadly no, however, my arms were not twenty feet long. You know what they say about a man with long arms though!" Hahaha!" He laughs, clapping the Lanvi retainer on the back as the two enjoy a hearty laugh over another drink. The drinks had been flowing at every stop, and Benaiah was doing his best to pace himself as they went through the tours.

Hepec nods to the group, indicating it is time to move on. As he walks out he leans over to whisper to one of the Callistrian acolytes, a red-headed lass with a youthful smile and wisdom hidden in her hardly noticeable crow's feet along her eyes. "They were more like fifteen feet, but I didn't want to brag too much." She giggles at the adolescent innuendo, and Benaiah doesn't bother to wonder if she was just being polite, or was actually amused by him.

The last few days had been pleasant. Very few visits from the voice in his head. Relaxing almost. Touring the facility, picking up slack, it had a calming effect on him. It was work he enjoyed, and gave him even more appreciation for the majordomo that was Hepec.

With Malgrim:

Dammit... there goes another one. I know he won't be far, but why does it feel like one of those times where even though your friend lives minutes away, you still hardly see each other?

"Don't worry bud! We will be hanging out more than you realize. We are all just a bit busy now, and it's not like we aren't still working together!" The large man's beaming smile is all to clearly a front for the mixed emotions he is feeling. "We'll see you tomorrow. No need to fret my friend." He continues to deflect before turning and parting ways with the hobgoblin.

With Luma:

"Hello again little mouse." he smiles, not realizing that his moniker might be insulting. The way it came out was in the most endearing way, however, as the smile on his face and his relaxed shoulders have no ill intent hidden in the words.

He nods along as Gwen and Arimar explain the situation, not having much more to add, but perks up when she mentions introducing her friend. The recent days meeting so many fans and fan-girls since the retaking of the house had done a surprising amount to reduce his natural defenses. He looks to the young man as he comes out of the shadows. "Well I suppose you already know a bit about who we are. Let's start with your name, shy boy."

"Just because he's probably done his research, there's no need to be rude, Benaiah," Arimar elbows his friend jokingly, "I'm Arimar, a... wow, I don't think I've ever said this like this before... a holy warrior of Sarenrae. The gruff fellow who just spoke is Benaiah, always good in a scrape - especially if that's a scrap type of scrape - and the little one with the silver tongue and golden smile is Gwendolyn."

Arimar smiles and bows after the introduction. If we are to keep House Derexhi on our side, best to be friendly to their friends.

Well, I suppose it's time for an entrance

From the shadows emerges a human male with long brown hair and brown eyes dressed in a flowing black jacket with a wide collar over well-tailored set of dark pants and shirt. In contrast to the aristocratic cut of the rest of his attire, a row of small pouches line his belt, and the iron-bound spine of a spellbook is is visibly secured with a small length of chain.

The man nods to the party with a small dip of his head and a wry look of amusement that crosses his face. Presenting his hands palms out and fingers splayed as if to demonstrate that he was unarmed, he then clasps his hands together with interlocking fingers in a caster's show of disarmament. With his display completed, he clears his throat and speaks out, making an effort that his voice wouldn't carry nearby: "I must apologize for the clandestine nature of this meeting. Luma can be quite straightforward..." Thinking a moment, he adds, "When she chooses to be." I wonder who this Malgrim fellow is that she is so taken by.

"You have many questions and statements which I will endeavor to address in the most coherent manner. To the first: my identity. My name is Fideail Kaddren, although that bit of a mouthful has haunted me all my life. Please, call me 'Fey.' Or 'Dale.' Or simply, 'Kaddren', as I was referred to as through most of my studies." A thought flashes through his mind: Or Wren. Only she calls me her 'Caged Wren', though. "Given your forays into the local political environment you may recognize the name of my House, although in this matter I act in my own... personal interests. Which is what has brought me to you all."

"My friend and compatriot, the love of my life and everything I care about in this world lays dying of an affliction that is remarkably similar in severity and nature as that of your business partner, or so I have gathered. The clerics have nothing they can do for her. Now, I would have preferred that mention of my love have been left out of this conversation entirely, as you all would seem to prefer mention of this... 'not-a-chalace' not be bandied about on the street. But both illustrate the gravity of this situation.

Luma refereed to me as 'not a nice person', which I find to be a most uncharitable appraisal. I will, however, acede that I am a determined individual. I am willing to tear apart all of Absalom in pursuit of a cure, if need and will not sit idly by." I would see this world burn to a cinder before I fail her again.

He pauses a moment. "Yet it seems that our meeting is fortuitous. By my count, you are one less in number, and I posses a variety of traits that you might find valuable." He nods at Gwen. "You asked of my schooling? I are you familiar with arcanists?" Not waiting for an answer, he continues. I will spare a lengthy discussion on arcane theory, but to me, the arcane is an art the way music is to a bard. While most are unable to stray beyond their sheet-music, there are some that can compose their own masterpieces. Beyond that, I have been trained in a... unique institution"

He visibly appears to think back over the conversation. "Have I covered everything? I believe so."

"Well, good to meet you, 'Kaddren'," that's going to get confusing, but at least if he joins our group it will be one fewer Major House out to get us..., "I can't speak for Benaiah or Gwen, but we are indeed one man down and I think some magical expertise might be exactly what we need right now. If they agree, I say welcome aboard." Arimar smiles and offers a handshake.

"As for your lover, please do take her to the Temple of Sarenrae," the Sarenite paladin urges, "If they cannot heal her, they will likely consider her for use of the Fountain sooner than otherwise. We can introduce you to Khania, the head of the order, and let her know you'll be helping us to restore the Fountain of Bethesda. That should go a long way to bumping her up the line. If you think you'll be invaluable to our cause, you could even try to achieve some assurances - though I wouldn't count on it." Arimar remembers fondly trying to get similar assurances for Keoki. Lanvi managed it when we failed, but there's no reason to tax the Church any further by telling Fideail here about it.

"Heh, let them say what they want, I'll be my own judge." he finishes, offering a hand to shake towards the newcomer and a wry smile towards the former necromancer.

"Placing any sort of trust in the hands of an assassin is a sure way to get yourself killed, but something about labeling Luma here an assassin doesn't quite seem to fit. In skill, perhaps, but... Ah, I digress. That's a very long winded way for me to say welcome aboard for now. You will of course need to prove yourself, but I'm sure you expected that. Sorry to hear about your girl."

"Oh, one more thing," Benaiah adds at the last second, "Get ready for a little trip to a place that is cold, and will possibly require an extensive amount of climbing. We will be leaving in the next day or so." the large man shrugs his shoulders to apologize for the short notice.

I'm sure it's nothing on the accomodations your house has for you, but we make do with what we can." Arimar gives Kaddren a customary and accidentally too-hard clap on the shoulders. I really must get used to my new strength...

"Luma, a pleasure to see you, as always..." Arimar realizes that last part wasn't exactly true, so adds, "... in recent times," and accompanies it wth a disarming grin.

Onwards... let's hit the shopping mall!

The halfling continues to look the young man over while her companions bend his ear. For the first few moments of the conversation, Gwendolyn watches only, observating how the youth's body and posture changes with each word. As she watches, the halfling finds herself empathizing Kaddren, and even thinking back to her time in the shackles when she had a love of her own. And like this newcomer, it was love that guided many of her actions. This was something about Kaddren she could relate to and see herself in almost immediately.

"If you are truly joining with us out of love for another," she begins softly. "Then you are most welcome."

She looks him up and down once more, before continuing, "It is noble... apparently... this thing you are doing. I too know the drive that acting for another can bestow upon one's self."

"It will be an honor to try and help you keep a loved one safe," stepping forward, the halfling holds out her hand and shakes Kaddren's. "My name is Gwendolyn. I'm not the strongest nor most powerful of our number, but at the very least, my music will help us pass the time." At that, the bard tips slightly and motions to the exquisite violin case slung across her back.

"Now, let's go and try to prepare for any number of situations we'll never see coming..." she adds, laughing as her voice trails off.

Oh, I get it, a X-men angram ... Reivax's School For Gifted Arcanists- Professor Xavier's School for gifted mumble mumble.

The Companions put the finishing touches on their preparations and head back to Mistress Lanvi's manor. There are multiple letters from Doctor Archisa Aparn stating that he is ready to go, he just has some last minute decisions that need to be made ... should I wear the buff colored breeches, or the dun colored dungarees?.

Balastar has written singing Malgrim's praises and the fact that preparations are proceeding quickly and easily. With time factored in for travel, they should be about two-weeks behind the teleporting Companions. Hopefully that will be enough time.

Lastly, there is a note from Mistress Lanvi herself. Her normally bold, flowing script is a bit choppy in places, but for the most part is highly legible.

My dearest friends,

Words cannot express the gratitude that I feel for all of you. What you have done for me personally, protecting me, defending my honor, and exacting retribution for the wrongs committed upon me, all speak of you as people.

Your tireless effort to keep the our business running and rebuilding what was lost has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. Money cannot purchase friendship like yours.

I know that you must soon depart, and I feel as if I will miss you all more terribly than if I was to lose an arm. Be safe, take care of one another, and above all return quickly.

Yours truly,

Mistress Lanvi

They also receive a note from Khania.

My the blessings of the Dawnflower be upon you,

I trust you are all well, and that your preparations are moving along nicely. We recently had the pleasure of meeting an acquaintance of a new friend of yours. Know the temple will do all it can to ease her suffering.

We pray for a safe voyage for you all.

Here is something to help you out.

Your true friend,
Khania

Arimar decides to respond personally to the letters. He visits the Temple of Sarenrae and checks on Mistress Lanvi personally.

"Marilyn," Arimar smiles, "You're looking better than before. Let's see if we can upgrade that to a 'well', shall we? We need to get some stone. It will cost between four and five thousand gold to secure. If only you were better, I'm sure you could have made a better deal for us." The paladin smiles. "Stay as healthy as you can, and know that we're trying as hard as we can to get that Fountain restored."

With a smile still on his face, Arimar moves out to see Khania.

"Looking lovely as always... though I suspect you're not getting much sleep," he adds with a raised eyebrow, "We are going to get the first of our three tasks done. Finally.

"You should be aware, though, that too many people know about this Fountain. There will be requests to use it, and demands. It will be a trickle at first as those in the know try to get in ahead of others, but then it will become a wave. This thing cannot stay quiet, it seems. You need to be prepared. Lanvi knows much of what to expect and she can help you. Beware of her advice, though, she may appreciate what we have done but do not think for a moment that she is any less a shrewd business woman. You need to be prepared for half of Magnimar to want to use the Fountain of Bethesda to heal one of their friends or relatives.

"That said, we can potentially use this to our advantage," Arimar is not sure what Sarenrae thinks of guile - if it's too close to lying and subterfuge or not - but he continues, "We will likely need more and more help to simply get this done. Granting one of the initial uses of the Fountain to those who provide us with invaluable aid could be a way to secure said aid where money won't work - or where we do not have sufficient monies to pay for it... much as you did for Keoki and Lanvi after she negotiated with you." Arimar cannot help but look at Khania apologetically as he remembers the negotiations.

"I know that Sarenrae will heal all who come," he repeats the mantra, "And I am bound to do the same. I want to do the same. However, in order to heal all who come we need that Fountain to be restored. If it means delaying the most worthy for a few days in order to get some who are less worthy but who helped to make things possible in first, then perhaps that is something we need to consider doing. Else, not even the worthiest may be healed.

"You must decide... and soon."

Arimar is happy to discuss things further, and also happy to leave Khania to her thoughts.

Kaddren shrugs at the halfing. "I've been around far too many nobles to give much weight to word. You are kind, but I won't dress up my actions; they're selfish, even it they are to benefit another." He looks to the two men. "On the subject of strength, given the cumbersome nature of cold weather gear, I may need some assistance carrying things when a simple Ant Haul does not suffice. I intend to pull my weight... even if I am unable to carry my body weight."

He chuckles. "I do have accommodations in the city, but I can understand the benefit of a central locale. I will complete some errands, then meet you at Lanvi's. I am familiar with it; she was quite the entertainer before her... unpleasantness..." He trails off. "Until then." He offers a small bow, then turns to the city.

After his purchases are complete, at a quiet but well kept building in the city.

Kaddren replaces the copper key on the chain it hangs from around his neck, closing the door and taking in the clean, sterile room. It appears my money is spent well; discrete servants are terribly hard to come by. With only a moment of hesitation, he heads inside to the single bed the room holds, and the unconscious occupant within. Silently, he lowers his hand to her forehead, moving a few stray strands of sweat-soaked red hair away from her ashen forehead, resting his wrist gently to feel the raging fever that still burns in her skin. Her condition was unchanged, not that he expected otherwise. A gift from one of the professors, some alteration of a spell even he didn't quite understand, kept his love in a sleep like death; risky, but the only solution he had available.

Taking one last look at her, he kisses her forehead then turns away, back to the door. Staring at the simple wooden frame, he affixes over the image in the bed with a vision of his love from his memories: vibrant, full of life, laughing at some joke. Quietly he whispers, "I will return for you, Celeste. You know I never make promises, but just this one time... I swear it. You will have your cure. If not this Fountain, I will find it, no matter the cost." Purposefully he strides from the room, and locks the door behind him, knowing it might be months before he returns.

Only once outside he presses his back against the door and collapses a bit, taking a deep, shuddering breath. Clenching his fists against the oak he closes his eyes for several heartbeats. Then he takes all the pain and shoves it deep inside, adopting a carefree mask of a grinning aristocrat, and sets off into the town.

Arimar gives Kaddren a sideways glance. "I can carry things for you if you need, and there's probably a little room still left in my Handy Haversack if you like."

Speaking of, just as an off-screen thing, our PCs should all familiarize themselves with the contents of each others' backpacks and Haversacks, including scrolls, potions, etc... and they should also all familiarize themselves with each of the other's spells & formulae. That way, we can help each other out in the case of unconsciousness without having to metagame by saying "oh, yeah, Arimar would totally know that Kaddren has a potion of cure moderate wounds on him - and know where to find it".

Benaiah's shoulders slump a little and his face turns ever so slightly sour at the mention of needing to carry things for the newcomer. "Careful now bub, don't want to wear out that welcome before we even get started." he says with a cryptic smile.

All good to move foward. RE: gear, I still have yet to update my profile, but everything I have will soon enough be included in my profile near the bottom. If it makes sense, I can divvy it up by storage location instead of generic categories... Actually I think that kinda makes sense. Hopefully I'll have time today or tonight.

Turning from Benaiah to Kaddren, the halfling's singsong voice calls out warmly. "Don't worry, new friend..." she says, now turning her gaze back to the towering form of Benaiah. "He's only joking..."

As her eyes look closely upon the scarred and muscularly built man, her mind begins to question. At least, I hope he's joking... her mind ponders, realizing how little of time she has actually spent with the men that had almost become Iike family to her, though there was still so much to learn about them and their pasts.

Her eyes narrow at Benaiah, clearly showing her displeasure at the uncertainty if his comment was meant in jest or sincerity.

She opens her mouth to speak but pauses, then only audibly sighs at her friend.
