Sorry for the lack of posting guys - last days have been hectic. Agreed on the misty run ;)

The trick seemns to have worked. Although the statues seem aware of your presence, they seem to rely on sight as much as you do. You manage to get across the bridge without any confrontation.

You have reached the Third Ring.

You notice a difference here. Clearly the Third Ring of Xin-Grafar is the source of the city’s powerful flows of molten gold, and as such, never floods with gold itself.

It stands 40 feet above the level of the Second Ring, and its ceiling is 40 feet high. A small building sits atop a flat, stone island inside the Third Ring, completely surrounded by a 25-foot-wide canal of molten gold and accessible only by a small bridge.

The building at the center of the ring stands about 30 feet tall and is topped by a peaked, goldtiled roof. The building has one door in the south wall and no windows. Even from this distance, you can see that the outside of the tabernacle is covered in ancient, gold-inlaid runes from the ground to the roof.

DC 30 Knowledge (history) or Linguistics check:

The runes are Thassilonian and ward against thievery.

Detect Magic or similar:

The runes are not magical, merely decorative.

Oh, there is a small detail of relevance concerning the small bridge. It is protected by an enormous skeletal dragon, plated from head to tail in gold and is sparkling in the greenish glow from above.

Upon sensing you, it flaps its skeletal wings and opens its large jaws, and begins stomping forward across the ground.

Shall I roll initiatives?

Aren't you glad I'm back?

HP: 47/47 - AC: 17 (21 w shield)|13|15 - For:+6 | Ref:+5 | Wil:+6 - Per:+10 Init:+2

Welcome back!

Naturally, Rythan can't hit the DC for the checks and doesn't have detect magic prepared, so he's goin' in blind! :P

Elated by their clever escape from the golden statues, Rythan slapped the others on the back in congratulations. But when he saw the dragon, he swallowed audibly. "Tell me that's just a skeleton... wait, that doesn't help either." He raised his sword warily, glancing at his friends. "Swords out, or do we have any more tricks up our collective sleeves?"

K:arcana: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
K:religion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Anyone want to try the grease trick under its feet? Though I would assume it would be harder to shove off the bridge than a humanoid skeleton... Any other ideas, besides channeling?

I have comprehend languages, Birch, would that let me take a peak under the first spoiler?

Rain gulps as the large draconic skeleton begins to thunder its way toward the group. "Uhhhh... I don't know how to hurt that either." She hastily draws the wand of shield again and, after using it, hands it to Rythanus.

Rythan uses the wand with a nod of thanks! He gave it back, then looked ahead again.

"Stront," he said succinctly as the dragon approached.

Can't hit the rolls either, aside from casting Detect Magic which I will do...

Rumha casts a spell and his eyes glow, granting mystic vision. He looks at the runes. "Well, they aren't magical. so I suppose that's good..." Then he sees the charging dragon skeleton. "Aaaaand here comes the bad."

The priest turns his glowing gaze on the approaching form, hoping it isn't real...

I'm hoping this is an illusion and Detect Magic will lets me see through it.

Rumha sees the skeletal dragon for what it really is - a skeletal dragon (albeit a young one if that cheers anybody up).

"I don't suppose it will kindly wait while we go out for a bit and come back with say a small army?" The half orc draws his blade, "Didn't think so. Guys, I don't think we'll be able to trick this one... unless one of you has a brilliant plan?"

HP: 39/39 - AC: 16|12|14 - For:+5 | Rex:+4 | Wil:+10 - Per:+12 Init:+2

"I'm thin on ideas on how to handle a rampaging skeletal dragon." Since this beast appears to be real, Rumha tries to determine if it is an undead or a construct and gauge how dangerous it is.

I'm a tad confused. Can we actually take actions before initiative here?

Knowledge: Religion 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (17) + 9 = 26

Combat hasn't initiated - you are aware of the dragon but it doesn't appear to be aware of you - and you're currently viewing it from a safe enough distance not to be engaged in combat.

You would surmise that the dragon is an animated skeleton i.e. undead. And its proximity to the heat suggests it is a fire dragon - this is reinforced by the notion that its gold-plating comes from swimming in the canals.

Rain glances forlornly at her sword, "I can't imagine I'd be able to do much more than scratch its shiny finish with this. I could maybe slip behind it and make a distraction for some of you, but that's the best I've got." She shrugs and shakes her head, wondering if her contributions will be enough.

mechanically speaking, I'm talking about flanking and aid another actions

Ah, OK. I thought the beastie had already seen us. How far away is the dragon?

I can't think of a way of tricking this guy. I've got one decent ranged attack against the dragon, one channel, and then I'm down to converting spells to Cures and going for touch attacks against it. Hopefully it is just a glorified skeleton and not something nastier.

"I could offer protection against it from those that will stand in the first line against such monstrosity..." - Heledar ponders - "It will all but exhaust my powers, and tax my healing, but it may be worth it" - he adds.

"Another option would be to have Grob hitting it as hard as he can, focusing the Goddess protection on him, while we simply fight defensively, but adding a valuable distraction, much like Talarin has pointed out"

Basically talking about Protection from Evil (+2 to AC), whether cast on one or two of us. Additionally, I can drop Bless for added opportunity to hit, and I am assuming with Rumha's roll we know we should use blunt weapons? Keep in mind I have 2 LoH, 3 level 1 spells and Life Link. I could drop Smite Evil, but I have the feeling we are not done yet...

Rythanus sheathed his sword and pulled a torch from his pack, twirling it before smacking it into his palm. "This is all I've got against it besides my magic, but I'm willing to try shocking it if anyone thinks that would help? Otherwise, Rain's plan sounds good to me. Well, maybe not good, but definitely our best bet."

Rythan can use a torch as a light mace, but that's the only blunt thing he's got. He could still try his shocking grasp trick to help Grob?

GM Birch, are the initiative rolls for after we have buffed, or before we start doing so?

They're waiting for you when you want to initiate combat (assuming you want to of course). So consider them post-buff (I just didn't want to hold you up if you wanted to act. At the moment, you would get a surprise round.

Just a note to say Heledar is not rushing in. After Rumha's spell, he simply stepped protectively in front of the others, readying an attack in case the creature moves in.

Your inactivity seems to have worked in your favour. Standing still for long enough seems to have allowed you to evade it's sight and after stretching its golden skeletal wings, it shakes its bony head and dives into the nearby canal for what can only be described as a swim. Clearly this is how it became gold-plated.

If you act quickly enough, you may be able to sneak past it.

I'm nothing of not pragmatic!

Grobradon follows suit

You all manage to get across without having to face the dragon. You may have to say hello on the way back of course.

As you continue, Talarin notices something shiny hidden in one of the adjacent buildings. Taking a look, it looks like a traditional dragon's hoard and contains: 50 gold-plated but otherwise worthless household objects, 1,265 gp in loose coins, a gold-plated adamantine battle axe, a goldplated brooch of shielding, a gold-plated horn of fog, and a small, gold-plated metal box (value 200gp) containing three potions of cure moderate wounds.

You have reached K on the map

I need you to level up to L6 before you enter the Third Ring

Rain's eyes glitter like the golden trove she spies in the nearby building. "Oooooo! Suddenly I don't think this place is all that bad." She rubs her hands together greedily and offers a sheepish grin to the boys, "I mean, this stuff isn't doing that skeleton any good. It'd be a crime to let it all sit here untouched for gods know how long."

"Just remember what happened to me when I tried to pick up a coin before," Rythan cautioned her, though the effect of the warning was lessened by him looking avariciously at the trove himself. "Do we have time to check for traps, or should we just poke it with a really long stick and see?"

You check, and it's not trapped.

"We best make the best use of what we have been fortunate enough to find" - Heledar offers with a huge smile - "Then we rest. I believe serious challenges are still ahead of us since we have not yet stopped the ones accountable" - he adds with a much more serious tone.

Rain nods at Heledar's suggestion, suddenly aware of the weariness in her legs and shoulders that had built up over the course of their scramble to the inner ring. "Probably somewhere not nearby to the skeleton dragon's horde we just pilfered though, right?" She adds a playful wink to the end of her question but then realizes her joke isn't as far from serious as she thought at first and casts a nervous glance back at the canal the boney beast dove into earlier. "Uhhhh... yeah, maybe we should hole up some place not near to here after all. Now that I think about it."

HP: 47/47 - AC: 17 (21 w shield)|13|15 - For:+6 | Ref:+5 | Wil:+6 - Per:+10 Init:+2

"Hopefully it won't come looking for us after we help ourselves to its hoard," Rythan said, picking up the more portable-looking things and tossing them into his pack. Once they were all ready, he went with them to find a more secure resting spot, looking a good deal more cheerful than he had ever since being poisoned by the lizardman's spear.

Perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

You are able to find a sensible resting spot - easily defendable and far enough away from the dragon's hoard.

You take it in turns to keep watch and by the early morning (you surmise) you are all rested.

You press on - this is the Third Ring by your estimation and the cultists must be close now.

Consider yourselves at point K now

You approach the door to the building you saw from afar before. The door contains a complex lock but whoever went through it last was able to open it.

The door opens to reveal a small, 10-foot-by-15-foot ledge high above a pit filled with gold coins. A similarly sized platform lies across the pit to the north. A door stands partially open in the northern wall on the far platform. A rope stretches across the pit, secured by pitons to the walls next to the doors in the north and south walls. The ceiling ends in high arches above the platforms.

The coins in the pit appear real. You can't tell how deep the pit is but the coins come up to a level 30 feet below the ledges.

Both the north and south platforms have handholds carved into their sides, clearly to aid climbing. The room is not naturally lit, though light creeps in from the open door on the northern ledge, casting the platforms in dim light and leaving the pit in darkness. The ceilings are 20 feet high above the platforms.
