Luna and Kronas spent most of the trip giggling and playing with each other, competing to see who can spot the most ugly looking fish in the river. Their games were only broken up by bursts of arts and crafts, with Luna taking White Feather to his word and playing with his hair, and Kronas sewing extra fringes and tassels to his prized Pathfinder Society flag.

Now, standing at the docks, Kronas nods along to Seldiir's suggestion "Good idea! If Madame Ivy owns the inn, I bet she knows everything that goes on around here." He takes a deep breath, enjoying the scents of spices and fish in the air as Kara goes to get her pie "I'm coming too!" He exclaims, skipping after her to buy a pie of his own.

White spends mot of the trip in quiet contemplation of the river and the lands beyond. Occasionally he can be seen in the early morning, stripped to the waist and running through a series of vigorous physical exercises followed by a period of prayer in deference to the Eternal Rose.

His skin is rich and caramel in colour but lines of whitish-pink scars trace here and there across his shoulders and chest that attest to his experience on the road. Never is he seen without his mask on however, even when he washes with river water he is careful to ensure that he has total privacy.

He enjoys his time with Luna and Kronas. He happily allows the female gnome to brush and plait his long hair, her fingers moving dextrously through the fine lengths. With Kronas he sits on deck at sunset, patiently teaching him an old Shoanti folk song, his rich barritone voice projecting surprisingly well even through his mask and mixing to a very pleasant symphony with Kronas' voice that is naturally an octave or two higher.

On the boat, Seldiir tried to keep busy helping with fishing and boat-work, especially anything where brute strength will get the job done.

During leisure hours, he tries to avoid talking about his own relative inexperience by quizzing crew-mates about previous missions and nodding sagely at their stories.

Season of Ghosts

More than ready to get down to business (and perhaps snag a meal that *isn't* fish-based), you all make your way from the riverside docks up a small dusty street into the heart of the small village. You can see that multiple farms dot the land surrounding the village, the fields ablaze in a riot of color - orange pumpkins, yellow squash, and red pomegranates just a few of the crops you identify as you walk.

The first real landmark of note that you pass is the remnants of a small stone tower, sitting up on a small hill overlooking the village commons. Carefully-tended flowers sprout up from between the crumbling stones, bobbing gently in the cool breeze. Just a little further up the road and across from the old stone tower you can see a large wooden building, covered in a multitude of paintings, carvings, and drawings. An elderly man with iron-gray hair and a strong, square jaw bustles around the outside, straightening some of the carvings and hanging decorations.

Beyond the decorative building, you can see that the road opens up into what must be Rosehaven's village square. A small stone well occupies the center of this square and you can see a multitude of people working to arrange bales of hay around it, as well as bringing in loads of pumpkins to sit atop them. Children run and play nearby, one of them occasionally pausing long enough to ask, "Will it be much longer?" to a nearby adult.

From the entrance to the square you can see that several houses and small shops sit close by, as well as what looks to be the local town hall. On the far side of the square you can see a two-story building, the sign hanging above the door reading 'The Silver Flute'.

Stepping off the boat, White Feather stands upon his tiptoes, arms out above his head, stretching as much as he can to the point his back cracks.

Ahhhhh, that's better. he says with satisfaction.

Looking around him he takes in the watercolour palette of oranges and yellows and reds as the fields stretch away. Through his mask takes in the heady scent of root vegetables, wild flowers and fresh air and finds it more than a little agreeable. City life was a wonder of different experiences and sensations, but the beautiful simplicity of this scene strikes him and he brushes his thumb against the muti-coloured bird broach on his chest.

Shall we? he says, turning to the others before stepping onto the dusty road and firstly toward the decorative building, how could he pass that by?

Approaching, he ensures the elder sees him and he greets him politely. Hello sir. he says. How are you this morning? I just had to come over and ask you about this tower, it's extraordinary! Is this your work?

He says, nudging Luna with an elbow and pointing towards the pumpkins *Squee!* and she immediately jingles off to investigate the assembled squashes up close. Kronas turns to his fellow Pathfinders and excitedly says "We won't be long... I promise!" And skips off after her. While Luna plays with the other children for a bit, Kronas asks a hundred questions about the forthcoming festival to just about everyone he can find.

White Feather
______

As White Feather hails the elderly gentleman, he looks up, his weathered features broadening into a smile as he sees the group of travelers.

"Ho there!" he waves, setting aside some ribbon he'd been in the process of stringing up along one of the building's windows. "The morning finds me well, thank you for asking! As for the flowers, well...I put in a bit of toil to plant them but I think the bulk of the praise should go to Gozreh for the fair weather and Shelyn for their colors. But I do thank ya just the same," he responds kindly. As he approaches, White Feather and anyone else taking the time to stop and chat will notice that he wears a symbol around his neck that depicts a songbird with beautiful rainbow plumage - the holy symbol of Shelyn.

"Name's Bertinard Dupin," he introduces himself, offering a meaty hand for a shake. "What brings you folks to Rosehaven, if you don't mind me asking? Here for the Mercylight festival, perhaps?"

Kronas & Luna
______

Meanwhile, both Kronas and Luna race on ahead and plunge into the crowds milling around the square. As Luna races over to investigate the pumpkins being set up, a young woman with fiery red hair smiles at her. "Hello there, little one. Do you like the pumpkins?" she asks kindly. "We're bringing them in from the fields all around the town. Once the festival starts everyone who wants to will be able to pick one out to carve. Would you like that?"

As Luna busies herself looking at the pumpkins, Kronas begins making the rounds through the crowd and asking all kinds of questions about the festival.

"Well, you see, about thirty years ago or so ol' Bertinard - he's th' local priest, runs th' Shelyn temple over there - he helped th' town cast out th' evil that was livin' among us," explains a middle-aged man as he plunks down a bale of hay. "Every year since then we all spend this time comin' together in forgiveness for what wrongs each of us done over th' past year."

"Oh, but that ain't all," he adds a little quickly. "There's games an' storytellin' an' the like too. Lots of fun for littluns, you know. It's one'a th' highlights of th' year for 'em!"

______

While White Feather chats with Bertinard and Kronas and his sister mill about in the crowded square, Lebraerio watches the proceedings from a respectable distance. His eyes are narrowed slightly as he scans the crowd, hoping to spot the blonde-haired half-elf named Armeline.

For a few minutes, it looks as if his observations will yield no fruit. But then, he spots movement on the far side of the square as a woman comes around the corner of a house that sits just opposite the Silver Flute. Though he can't quite tell if her ears are pointed from where he stands, he can see that her hair is blonde, worn loosely around her shoulders with a couple of small braids at the front. She walks at a relaxed pace and pauses for a moment to exchange greetings with an elderly woman setting up a small vendor stall.

Ah a fellow Shelynite! White Feather exclaims delightedly. He slaps the forehead of his mask like a man who has just had a sudden revelation. Then the quality of your work surprises me not at all. You do yourself and the Rose great credit, Mr Dupin.

My name is White and I travel with my new-found friends for the festival but, more importantly, hoping to find someone we believe lives here. A half-elf named Armeline, perhaps you have heard of her?

As polite as he is, White Feather has long since learned how much of a barrier his mask is, but he would never remove it all the same.

Feeling more and more certain that he's found their target, Lebraerio does his best to meld into the crowd and appear as just another festival-goer. He slowly inches his way closer to the woman, moving just within earshot of the conversation being held with the older woman.

"Well, it's so nice to see you back from your hunting trip dearie," the elderly woman chatters as she lays out a variety of homemade pies and other assorted baked goods for display. "It's a shame that you weren't able to bag yourself a nice big buck but there's always next time, right?"

"Exactly right Miss Matilda," the blonde woman chuckles. Now that Lebraerio is closer, he can see what looks like the tip of a pointed ear peeking through her long hair. She puts her hands on her hips and surveys the growing festival crowd with a satisfied expression. "Looks like this year might be the best turnout yet. Plenty of faces, both old and new!"

As the half-elf looks around, she pauses for a fraction of a second as her eyes sweep over Lebraerio's position...and he'd almost swear that her eyes meet his before she turns back to the elderly Matilda. "Well Miss Matilda, it's been nice talking with you but I'd best get on with my rounds, maybe meet a few of these new faces," she continues with a respectful nod.

Bluff (Secret Message): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Lebraerio:

"I see you. Who are you and what do you want?"

"That sounds like a fine plan, dearie - you spend too much time to yourself as it is," Matilda scolds gently. "A pretty girl like you ought to get out and mingle a little from time to time. Now go on, shoo!"

"Yes ma'am!" the half-elf laughs. But as soon as she turns away from Matilda, the smile is gone - replaced by a tense scowl. She moves into the square but remains at the edge of the activity, taking a seat on a hay bale as if to watch the proceedings.

Season of Ghosts

Kronas & Luna
______

"You carve whatever little thing strikes your fancy," the red-headed woman responds as she kneels down next to Luna, so as not to force the little gnome to crane her neck looking upward. "Some people carve animals, others carve scary faces - or silly ones. And there's always plenty of pumpkins; most of the farms around here see to that and Elm especially. In fact, Elm's are usually the best - being a druid tends to have that effect on the plants and animals, I've heard," she grins. "But no one minds being shown up a little since he works so hard to make sure we have plenty of good pumpkins for the festival every year."

As Luna makes her offer to help, the young woman's grin broadens even more. "I can see that! We've actually got plenty of help; if we run low then some of the men will head out into the fields to get more. But..." she looks thoughtful "...if you want to help set the ones we've got on the bales here then that would help a lot!"

She leans in a little closer and whispers in conspiratorial manner, "And you can get a head-start on picking the best pumpkins for the carving!"

Just a few feet away, still keeping a watchful eye on his little sister, Kronas continues his chat with the middle-aged man. When he presses for more details about the past evil, the man's demeanor undergoes a subtle shift - some of the cheer and good humor leaves his eyes and he shifts his weight slightly from foot to foot. "Aw, there ain't no need in diggin' all that old business up again," he responds. "T'was all settled a long time ago and ain't nothin' you or anyone else should worry yourself about. Just have fun an' enjoy the festival, okay?"

Though he smiles, the smile doesn't quite reach his eyes this time.

Season of Ghosts

Seldiir
______

Deciding that they can cover more ground by spreading out, Seldiir makes his way through the crowded square to the Silver Flute. The door opens into a surprisingly cozy common room, dotted here and there with well-kept wooden tables and chairs and a bar along the northern wall. The fireplace, though not currently lit, still holds the remnants of the previous evening's fire and Seldiir can easily imagine spending an evening enjoying a good meal and few drinks in front of it.

As he walks in, he's not surprised to see that the Silver Flute is largely empty as most of the village is currently outside preparing for the start of the festival. Behind the bar stands a middle-aged woman, working on wiping down the bar. She looks up, her face lighting up as she spots the stranger in town.

"Hello! Welcome to the Silver Flute," she calls out. "Here for the festival, right? Of course you are! Well lucky for you it shouldn't be too much longer before Bertinard gets things started. But in the meantime, feel free to have a seat and a drink - and not even in that order if you don't want," she continues, waving Seldiir over as if trying to flag down a carriage.

"Name's Ivy and I run the Silver Flute," she explains, chattering away. "Named for that flute right there," she continues with a jerk of her thumb, indicating a delicate silver flute on prominent display on a shelf behind her. "Used to be called the Harpy's Alehouse, after my ma. But then one night we had a traveling bard from Pitax stop and spend a night; he was so impressed with Rosehaven's hospitality that he left his flute here as a gift. So I changed the name and it's been the Silver Flute ever since. Liked it better that way anyway and so did ma!"

Nothing to See Here:

Bertinard Sense Motive: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10

"I thank you, but I just do as best as these old hands will let me," Bertinard responds, his tone now slightly guarded. "Always a pleasure to meet another Shelynite too, 'specially at this time of year. Shame it wasn't just the festival that brought you here, though."

He pauses for a moment, as if weighing something in his mind. "To get down to brass tacks Mister White, we get a lot of people that pass this way that have troubled pasts. Sadly it's an all-too-common occurrence, given the state of the country. Some of these folks stop for a day or two and keep going but some of them decide that Rosehaven's the kind of place that they could settle in, start a new life. Be left alone." Bertinard gives White Feather a pointed look. "And the ones that've had roots here for years do them the courtesy of not asking too many questions."

"So, I don't know what you want with Armeline and it's not my business to ask. All I'll say is that I hope you have a good reason to come looking for her, rather than being here to start trouble in Rosehaven. Constable Tivareau won't stand for it and neither will I," Bertinard states in a matter-of-fact tone.

Nothing to See Here:

Kara Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

While most of the group converses with the locals or visits the local establishments, Kara decides to set up something of a watch in the center of the square. After visiting Matilda's pie and baked good stand (Queen of Tarts), she settles next to the well to enjoy a warm, delicious-smelling fried apple pie.

As she watches the crowd she has no problem spotting Kronas as he flits around, asking question here and then darting off to ask another question there. She can also see Luna and she can't help but smile a little as the young gnome girl chats excitedly with a red-haired woman about the pumpkins. White Feather seems to be in deep conversation with the priest Bertinard and Seldiir wades through the crowd and disappears into the Silver Flute.

For a few minutes, things in the crowd are largely uneventful. But then, she spots Lebraerio as he seems to be attempting to shadow a woman from afar - a woman with braided blonde hair and slightly-pointed ears. She watches with interest as the woman makes her way to the edge of the square and takes a seat on one of the hay bales, as if waiting for someone to join her.

Good sir, causing trouble for you or your fair town is the absolute last thing on my mind I assure you. And I would be more than happy to call in on Constable Tivareau to let him or her know we are in town.

The old priest considers White Feather's words for a moment and then nods, as if he's decided something. "Aye, I believe you - even with that mask hiding your face. Her house is just up the road there, across from the Silver Flute, but with the festival starting shortly she may be out and about in the square," Bertinard nods. "Blonde hair and she's got some elf blood in her too - you'll know her when you see her."

As White Feather bids the priest goodbye, he offers another respectful nod and waves at the Shoanti. "Same to you! Just be mindful of what I said and I'm sure Armeline will hear you out." Bertinard then turns and heads inside the temple.

Continuing just a few more paces up the road, White Feather steps into the bustling Rosehaven square. He spots Kronas and Kara right away, sitting next to the well at the center of the square. As Lebraerio makes his way over to where the half-elven woman sits, he can see that she gazes up at the sky, her features devoid of expression. She makes no move to greet him or otherwise acknowledge his presence as he softly speaks to her of mending fences and 'misunderstandings'.

For a long moment she's silent and Lebraerio finds himself almost to the point of wondering if he's being deliberately ignore when the woman finally speaks. "You are an agent of the Society, then?" she asks, still gazing up at the sky. "Do you know why I do not speak with the Decemvirate? Why my writings do not travel downriver with Hugo any longer? Perhaps you have heard something, but not, I think, the story entire. If you had, you would not come to me in so callous a way, dragging up dark memories in your wake. Very well, I shall tell you."

"My imprisonment was my own fault as much as your organization’s; I was careless. I have always used book cyphers. Are you familiar with the concept? I could not resist the irony of using Citizen Goss’ own Manifesto. I was a fool to use a book that anyone investigating me would be sure to own. One of my messages, I think it was a report on the treatment of political prisoners, was intercepted, decoded, and I became the subject of my own report. I did manage to send word to Woodsedge before I was captured. I thought rescue was sure to come. Waited, I did, in that dank cell for weeks. The day of my execution drew close, and I knew that no agents were to come for me. Do you know what saved me?"

Here, the woman, Armeline, for she could be no one else, turns a cold gaze upon Lebraerio. "Mildew. Mildew was my salvation. The guards, they did not clean the walls regularly. The mold and mildew grew, and from them I extracted what I could. I used these, urea from my piss, iron from my blood, and the salt of my tears to make an alchemical concoction to disguise myself as an off-duty guard. I told them, “Armeline has escaped!”, and I joined the hunt for myself. I slipped away once I was past the outer walls."

"I drank my own urine to save my life. No one came. No one was even sent!" Armeline hisses, a cold fury in her eyes. "I later find no one even sent word from Woodsedge to request personnel. And now they have the gall to send you and whoever else to say that they're 'so sorry'? Well."

Armeline rises to her feet and looks down upon Lebraerio. "Nothing personal to you, but the Society can go pound sand. Oh, and enjoy your stay in Rosehaven," she adds before turning and striding away into the crowd.

For what it's worth, you didn't make her attitude worse, rather it's a matter of her being quite difficult to impress.

Everyone Sans Seldiir
______

As most of you congregate in Rosehaven's square to share the bits and pieces of information you've picked up, you all notice that Lebraerio sits talking to a woman near the edge of the square. You can't make out what's being said, but the woman does not seem impressed with whatever Lebraerio has to say as she quickly gets up and strides off into the crowd.
______

Feel free to share your impressions of Rosehaven and the like with each other first and don't feel rushed; the above happens a few minutes later and is something that likely everyone but Seldiir will see.

Seldiir sips his drink and shrugs, ”I don’t know about that. Good beer and fine conversation: I’m doing alright.”
He glances out of the window, ”Besides, I’m best out of the way right now. We’re here to deliver an apology, what ma would call a mea culpa, and I’m not much of a fine talker. I’d probably say the wrong thing and get people all riled up.”

Just before the woman go, Lebraerio says

You were very ressourceful, and I admire you, as a dabbler in alchemy myself, for your brilliant plan. I don't know all the facts, and I'm glad you gave me YOUR side of the story, believe it or not. I hope we'll meet again, in more favorable circumstances. Farewell, Armeline. My name is Lebraerio, and I hope to be able to help you.

He doesn't move when she walks out, giving her space and time, watching her go

He calls as the masked man enters the square "Did you know that this whole festival is because of that old man you were talking to? He must be real powerful or something, because he drove off some big evil... thing. I don't actually know what it was, because people don't like to talk about it." He also waves at Zarunkumar as she quietly approaches "They have this festival instead! Everyone apologises and forgives each other for the bad things they did in the last year, and I bet there is a lot of hugging... I think I want to move here, everything is soo prettyful, and the people are soo nice!" He points at Luna, who seems to be having the time of her life with the kind red-haired woman "See!"

"Katriane! That's pretty!" Luna exclaims as she extends her hand as far as she possibly can for her new friend to shake "I'm Luna, and that silly gnome is my brother, Kronas." She says, indicating the big-haired gnome who was jumping around and waving moments ago, but who is now pointing at Luna and Katriane "We're here to apologise to a nice half-elf lady called Arnie... Umm... Armeline!" She leans in and starts whispering conpiritorially "I'm going to make my pumpkin look all pretty and give it to her! Do you think she'll like a pumpkitten?"

Really? White replies, somewhat surprised. He seemed a nice fellow, very talented but he didn't mention anything like the fact this was his festival.

White thinks a moment, a finger scratching along his neck.

He seemed very concerned that we not cause trouble in town, as if he were expecting outsiders to do that - especially when it came to Armeline. He thought she had been dealt a pretty rough hand and that we might be here to somehow take advantage of that or otherwise be a nuisance. I assured him that wasn't the case.

He guides Kronas' attention to the square where he points;

I think Lebraerio has already found the person we're looking for, but she doesn't seem best pleased with what he had to say. Maybe we should catch up with the others, as I understood it our mission was to deliver that message but I suppose it's up to Armeline whether she reads it or not. he shrugs.

Kronas nods "That could be her, she is blonde... I wonder what Lebraerio said to make her so mad." He thinks for a second, taking in the sights of the festival preparations "Maybe Armeline will be in a better mood once the party starts? Or at least we can ask Lebraerio what not to say to her." He starts hopping up and down, trying to see over the bales of hay "I agree, we should regroup and come up with a plan to enjoy the part- I mean, apologise to Armeline... Umm, did anyone see where Seldiir went?"

______

"Hah! That's the first time in awhile I've had anyone call talking to me 'good conversation'," Ivy chuckles. "Usually it's just Hugo. But I thank you for the compliment just the same."

"Anyway - you're here to apologize to someone?" she continues, looking intrigued. "Well now, that's what Mercylight's all about so you couldn't have picked a better time to come to Rosehaven. And besides, it's not so much what you say but whether or not you mean it, right? As long as you mean what you say then I wouldn't worry too much about getting folks riled up. Shelyn blesses honest effort in things like that."

Ivy pauses for a moment and then glances over at her shoulder at the flute hanging on the wall. "Same goes for making music. Do you play any instruments Mister....?" she asks, as Seldiir realizes that he never actually gave his own name.

Lebraerio
______

Armeline hesitates for just a moment, considering Lebraerio's parting words. "Thank you, for being willing to listen to it. I wish the Society's higher-ups had shown the same compassion - if they had then we wouldn't have needed to have this chat."

You watch as Armeline melds back into the crowd. Then you spot everyone else, except for Seldiir, sitting near the well and watching your exchange - except for Kronas who's jumping up and down.

The rest of you congregate by the well and discuss how to proceed, seeing as Armeline is clearly not in much of a mood to listen at the moment. When Kronas inquires as to Seldiir's whereabouts, Kara mentions that she's almost positive she saw him heading towards the Silver Flute.

Close by, Katriane looks a little surprised when Luna mentions Armeline. "You and your brother and his friends are here to talk to Armeline? I think she just got back into town from a hunting trip yesterday so you should be in luck."

"Armeline may seem a little gruff sometimes but she's always been kind to us and I think she's even helped Constable Tivaraeu once or twice, too. I bet she'd love a pumpkitten," she adds in a whisper.

”Seldiir, Seldiir Elberion. Sorry. See, that’s why I’m not delivering the apology: start talking to a good-looking woman and I forget my own...” Seldiir blushes bright red.

So, um, yeah. I’ve got to check in with my crew. We’ll definitely take some rooms though, definitely, I’ll check, yeah...”
Babbling his excuses, Seldiir heads outside and spots the others by the fountain.

”Plenty of rooms at the inn.”

I just had a little chat with miss Armeline. She is holding a grudge, and I can't really blame her, but she seems to be open to discussion if someone isn't too forceful. She is kind and resourceful.

How much do we push it though? White asks with some concern. We can deliver the message but if we press the point mightn't she complain to the Constable? The last thing we want is to sully the Society's reputation by being heavy handed.

I think she needs someone to talk to, to air her grievances. She needs to be listened to, probably, and to be showed repentance and good will.
