Karos assumes most pilgrims had a meal break at the shrine before they continued their ascent to the temple.
Observing the statues a bit more closely...
One of the statues depicts a female monk holding an old, pitted bronze gong in her hands. A small bronze mallet hangs on a chain from the statue.
Knowledge (geography, local, or religion)
The second statue depicts a monk with a bowl in his hands.
Knowledge (planes or religion)
Yoshi Masaso |
Yoshi sits down for a brief rest while the others discuss the shrine.
"I am thinking the gong is for striking and the bowl for offerings. But I am not knowing what offerings a god of mountains is liking. Maybe a stone from the way?" he pants
Karos Valdian |
Knowledge (local)(first statue): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (17) + 8 = 25

"Well from what I've heard, the appropriate offering is a bowl of rice. We need to sound the gong to announce our presence to the spirit world, too."
I assume that Karos's rations include rice.
He will place a ball of rice in the statue's bowl, then sound the gong and contemplate the natural surroundings. He may be a soldier of Cayden Cailean, but he is reverential towards all divinity that does not possess ill intent.
Kraak Sharpbeak |
Felicitas is for a moment amused, but then very pleased with the knowledgeable Inquisitor. She offers to take care of the gong.
Yoshi Masaso |
"Is it being just rice" says Yoshi.
He'd prefer someone else to do this as he is tired, and Yoshi has +0 and -1 for his bonus here but this is PBP, so I'll put this in and if nobody else posts, guess we take this. Ideally he would aid not lead this activity

Kraak Sharpbeak |
Kneeling next to the gong, Felicitas waits for the opportune moment and then strikes the gong.
Perf.Perc: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Michael Hallet |
Felicitas gently strikes the gong whil Yoshi prepares a fire to cook the rice. He manages to get the pot of rice started, but takes the opportunity to relax his tired muscles a bit too long and the rice is burned into a blackened lump.
After a tough hike up a narrow trail along the face of the mountain, the Pilgrim's Path suddenly ends. A cylindrical portion of the mountainous landscape—one hundred and fifty feet in diameter—is simply missing. An old milestone still points southwest toward the strangely symmetrical crater, but an arrow engraved in the cliff face points west toward a series of water-slicked steps carved into the unnatural cliff.
Knowledge (arcana or geography)
Tanbaru wails quietly and his tiny body shakes in disgust as he sees what is left of his former ward. Tanbaru says, "It was here! This is the place where my ward, my path, was sundered."
Even after the lower part of the temple disappeared, a few persistent pilgrims still continued to climb to the upper part of the temple.
Craft (stonemasonry) or Knowledge (dungeoneering, engineering, or geography)
I have placed a link to the map on the top of the page. The challenge is to cross the narrow ledges to reach the stairs up to the temple, climb up the cliff to reach the temple or employ some other sort of creative solution to reach the temple. The red lines are 10' gaps in the ledges, the orange line is a 5' gap. While your at it make sure the reporting info on the first slide is how you would like it to appear on your chronicle.
Yoshi Masaso |
"I am thinking that merely climbing upwards may be being fruitful" he explains as he looks upwards.
How high and roughly how hard would the climb be? And is Yoshi still fatigued, or did he get a rest at the shrine?
Michael Hallet |
You had time to rest at the shrine. The cliff looks like an uneven surface with some handholds, but water runoff looks to make it a bit slippery. It looks like it would be about a 40 foot climb to reach the top. The bottom of the crater is 60 feet below your current location. The vegetation at the bottom might soften your fall a bit, but it would still hurt.
Kraak Sharpbeak |
Take 10 for all Knowledge skills. Result 17.
Felicitas will point out what she finds.
Karos Valdian |
"So...something took your ward? The only way to learn more is to climb up, so let's get to it," says Karos.
Karos is no climber, so he jumps, leaping from rock to rock until he arrives. He then throws one end of a rope back to Yoshi. "Tie it off and it'll help everyone else come across!"
10' gap (DC 10): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
5' gap (DC 5): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Sindelle Lifewater |
"Well, before we all start doing more physically...demanding things..." Sindelle closes her eyes for a moment and gets a somewhat sly smile on her face before continuing. "Let me do what I can to ensure that I can alleviate your hurt, if you should become hurt that is."
Sindelle will go to Yoshi, Karos, Kraak, and Tanbaru brushing each of their shoulders with her fingertips for a brief moment, extending her powers over life to each, giving the muscular gentlemen a particularly suggestive smile in the process.
Sindelle is activating Life Link on each member of the party so if you are ever damaged at least 5 hit points during rounds, you will heal 5 and Sindelle will absorb that damage herself.
"But for the jumping/climbing...I excel at certain semi-athletic pursuits, but getting across chasms isn't one I'm usually hired for. If one of you big strong men could help carry me down when we're finished here, I can arrange to get myself across this time without assistance?"
Yoshi Masaso |
Yoshi will jump across with him, as the jumps are easy for him to make. And if there is a problem, Yoshi would like to be nearby to help. But only need for one person on each bit of path at a time.
"I will be being happy to lower you down when we are being finished." notes Yoshi to Sindelle.
Kraak Sharpbeak |
Felicitas also smilingly takes a running start.
JumpPanache: 1d20 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 7 + (4) = 19
Sindelle Lifewater |
Sindelle smiles at Yoshi. "Well, in that case..."
Sindelle will wait until both Yoshi and Karos have crossed and then will retrieve and activate a Floating Featherfeather token.
A pair of large wings grows from Sindelle's back allowing her to fly (speed 30, average maneuverability) for 1 minute. Once Yoshi and Karos have a foothold on the other side she will fly to them and stay 5 feet off the ground and behind them until her wings duration ends then will land behind them with a serene sort of smile on her face.
Michael Hallet |
Karos makes it across, with Yoshi only a few paces behind. Felicitas jumps the first gap as Sindelle waits for her turn to cross.
As Karos lands, he realizes he has leaped right next to a den or serpents. The others are not so fortunate, especially Sindelle who has attracted the attention of a pair of vipers.
The tiny viper reaches out and sinks fangs into Sindelle while Karos manages to avoid a bite from the larger constrictor.

Felicitas beautiful voice is heard, singing of heroes past and battles valiantly fought. Inspire courage +1
She will also draw her rapier.
Sindelle Lifewater |
Did the vipers drop down from above? Sindelle was flying above everyone else so that they could keep walking underneath her, unless the vipers have reach? Also if it was a surprise round did they charge to be able to both move into her square and attack? I guess I'm just not understanding the map
Sindelle Lifewater |
I clearly need you to explain the map for me then. The description was that there was a gap that could be jumped, but it looks like there's a big cliff-face or a climb directly up/down to a platform?
Michael Hallet |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I added some elevation markers on the map to try to explain things a bit better.
You came onto the map from the path on the bottom of the screen. The temple you are trying to reach (elevation 0') is on top of the mountain, 50 feet above that path (elevation -50'). That path originally turned to the right (toward the top of the map) and gently sloped upwards to the set of swithback stairs (at the top where Karos is), but something wiped out most of the path with a large crater, leaving only those narrow ledges.
According to what you wrote, it appeared you were going to wait for both Karos and Yoshi to reach the end of the ledges and climb up the stairs to the platform at the top (elevation -10') before activating your token so you could fly up an meet them. But as soon as Karos hit the last ledge, the encounter was triggered.
Sindelle Lifewater |
The elevation markers and explanation make perfect sense thank you! If I had seen this I might have made a different call but no takes-backsies!
Since she already has it in hand she will activate her Feather Token and will fly on an angle until she is 10 feet up from the ground and much closer to Yoshi and Karos, trying to dodge the snakes as she flies.

Missed it by that much. (DC is 19.)
The other viper also pursues Felicitas while the bigger snakes continue to bite at Karos. The one above him manages to get a hold of him. This time Karos is unable to pull away from him. It begins to wrap around his head and squeeze.

Sindelle winces again as she continues to absorb damage from Karos (Karos heals another 5, Sindelle takes another 5) as she flies halfway between him and Yoshi. Her ears understand Yoshi's words but only being able to respond in her cursed tongue.
