DM Puppet Master |

Between the grimy windows and the grates over them, all Jaed is really able to tell about the insides of the building is glimpses of movement.
It's currently still morning. Probably around 9-10am.

Marzela |

Marzela realizes that despite her reluctance, she is the best person for the job, and she steels herself and then walks boldly up to the door. If it looks like a normal shop / place of business, she walks in as a customer would. If it looks more closed up than that, she knocks.

DM Puppet Master |

While the door does not seem locked, there appears to be something on the other side of it, forcing Marzela to knock. There's a pause and then some soft chattering in Vudrani before the sounds of a person approaching can be heard.
"Was that someone at the door?"
"It can't be Lankesh; it's too early."
"Well, go see who it is and send them away then."
"Ok, be ready."
The whispered conversation seems to taking place between 3 individuals.
There's a scraping noise of something moving against the door before it opens just enough for a round-faced man with a scraggly beard to poke his head out and peer around. He squints examining all of you before loudly announcing in Vudrani. "Go away you five. We are not open to the public."

Carrakas |

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21
Carrakas stands with his arms crossed, an annoyed and impatient look on his face.

Marzela |

Perception: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 24
Honestly, that is unbelievable. I can't believe that Dicebot hates me quite that much. Wow.
Greetings. We are investigating a murder, having been authorized and given authority by Raheem Pandisar, counselor to the Thakur. We don't want to disturb your business, but will have to insist upon searching the building. The more you cooperate, the less we will have to interfere in your normal operations.
While speaking, Marzela moves forward a little and gets her foot wedged in the open door so they can't easily close it on her. She motions subtly to Carrakas to move up as well, in case they have to force their way in.

DM Puppet Master |

The man doesn't move. "No. Bossman said no one comes in, so no one comes in."

Jaed Zandorias |

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23
"I'm gonna guess he said no. Just let him know we are not asking."
"C'mon, move away from the door," Jaed says in Common, articulating every word and speaking slightly louder as usual thinking that may help the man understanding.

DM Puppet Master |

It's unclear if the man understands Jaed's pantomiming, but he doesn't seem like he intends to move away any time soon.

Marzela |

Marzela looks even more determined after hearing Lily's whisper. She tries diplomacy one last time.
I'm afraid we have to insist. We do have the authority to investigate.
She shows him the Writ of Authority.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (19) + 21 = 40
If that doesn't work, then (in common) Marzela says I have told them that we have authority to search the premises, and they are refusing us entry. We need to do it anyway, preferably without having to fetch the guard.

DM Puppet Master |

The man grabs the writ and squints at it, making a big show of slowly and carefully reading over every single word, mouthing the words as he goes. When he's done, he stops, scratching his chin and tilting his head to one side. A couple of times he looks like he's about to say something, but then he stops to squint at the paper once more.
Finally he hands the paper back, once again loudly proclaiming "Fine, I guess I have no choice but to let you in." However, instead of actually opening the door to let you in, he simply walks away while leaving the door open.

Carrakas |

Carrakas quickly moves into the building, overtaking Marzela to be in front, in case any funny business is afoot. As he does, he looks around the immediate area.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (8) + 13 = 21

Finnrick |

Finnrick who tried following the conversation follows in the back, keeping an eye out for danger. "What do you think they could be hiding to be this secretive?" he whispers. "Though I do take it as a sign that we are on the right track."

DM Puppet Master |

Finnrick: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Darkness: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (17) + 1 = 18
1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
When Marzela steps into the room and is quickly overtaken by Carrakas, they see that huge looms cover most of the floor in room beyond. On each loom, hundreds or thousands of yards-long warp threads wind through intricate wooden frames, and spools of silken thread hang down from tall wooden stands that rise up toward the rafters of the high-ceilined roof, ready to be loaded onto shuttles. There are windows high on the western wall, and the crowded floor space between the looms is a mess of clutter.
Unfortunately, there's no time to do much more than take a brief glance around before a loom that had been raised and tied up against the wall comes crashing down. Take 1d6 ⇒ 3 damage and make a DC 15 Reflex save. If you fail, you're now trapped under the broken loom, making you prone and entangled with the devices many cords, threads, and beams. Getting loose is a DC 20 Escape Artist check.
Map has been moved to the first slide in the link above. Red squares on the map are difficult terrain.
Combat Round 1

Finnrick |

Perception: 1d20 + 24 ⇒ (13) + 24 = 37
Is this save/damage for all of us? Just incase...
Reflex: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Finnrick skips out of the way and points to the ceiling, [/b]"They're in the rafters, " [/b] he announces.
Millsy Reflex: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27

DM Puppet Master |

The save is just for Carrakas and Marzela, who are also the only PCs currently in the building. No one else was affected by the falling loom.
Also, everyone kindly ignore Finnrick's yell. He's currently outside and would not have been able to attempt the perception check yet since he's not up in initiative to move into the building. If you check the map, Marzela and Carrakas are currently the only PCs in the building as the loom fell pretty much right as they entered.

Carrakas |

Ref save: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20
Not up yet, but wanted to get my rolls out there anyway.
Carrakas nimbly jumps out of the way of the falling bulk, taking a couple of jabs and bumps as he does, but largely avoiding the bulk of the attack. He curses, then begins looking around for the assailants.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27

Marzela |

Reflex: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Marzela, having been alert to possible deception because of Lily's warning about Lankesh, nimbly avoids being trapped by the falling loom, though she does get a nasty cut, near the still-fresh arrow wound.
Perception: 1d20 + 25 ⇒ (15) + 25 = 40
She motions to Carrakas and says Snipers in the rafters.
________
She then moves away from the entrance while pulling out her bow and shoots at the closest sniper.
Attack: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 8 + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

DM Puppet Master |

Carrakas and Marzela both manage to avoid getting entangled in the broken loom as Marzela manages to hit one of the men up in the rafters. Now that they've been pointed out, those in the building can see that towards the back is an odd bird-man-like creature.
If you're inside the building, you can make a DC 19 Kn(Planes) check and pick one of the areas listed in the Knowledge Check spreadsheet. For every 5 by which you beat the DC, you can pick a second area to gain information about.

Finnrick |

My apologies, I was so excited that I actually had time to post that I didn't look at the map.
Finnrick snaps out of his daydream of creatures in the rafters and falling looms and instead takes a look around outside.

Jaed Zandorias |

Jaed spectates the falling of the loom followed by Marzela's warning.
Uh, snipers. He opens his bag and reaches for his crossbow. "Long time, no see, my old friend," he mutters while he loads a bolt on it.

Indileth Amaneldth |

Lily rushes in heedlessly, trying to get close to Marzela.
Knowledge (planes): 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25
As she goes she makes a simple gesture at the cultist nearest Carrakas and shouts a terrifying word.

Will update with their actions after work today. But in the meantime, Lily, what two fields did you want details about? Your options are in the Knowledge Checks spreadsheet.

This winged creature is known as a Garuda. It has clawed hands and bird's talons with large, glinting eyes and a serrate beak. They're typically noble, birdlike outsiders who remain detached from humanoid societies. They tend to be impetuous and gallant, often serving as protectors of nearby communities. They do not have any special defenses, but they do have spell resistance 21 and DR 10/(evil or magic).
Will, DC 18: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
After Marzela's warning, Jaed pulls out his crossbow and Lily rushes in, attempting to frighten the mill worker on the ground near Carrakas. The man seems to shake off most of the effect though.
Suddenly, out of nowhere, three more figures appear on the ground floor, their invisibility wearing off as they each shoot an arrow at the three people in the building.

Indileth Amaneldth |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Lily nearly collapses as the arrow punctures her chest just below her collarbone. She staggers and manages to choke out, "Why would a garuda... help... assassins?"
Barely managing to compose herself, she turns and unleashes real fear against the archers.
Casting fear in a diagonal cone to the southeast; this will hit all four of the ones on the ground level (red, green, blue, yellow). Will save DC 22 or panicked for 8 rounds. Anyone cornered while panicked cowers. On success, shaken for 1 round.

Marzela |

Fort Save: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Marzela is hit hard, again, and feels the unmistakable taint of poison seeping into the wound, weakening her.
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (6) + 13 = 19
I have no idea why he would help them. He just cast Haste. We definitely walked into the Lion's den this time. Jaed! Finnrick! Where are you? We need help!
Marzela casts Holy Smite about 10 feet off the ground, so the circle should encompass the people on the ground and in the rafters (20 foot radius, so 40 foot circle at widest point) Red circles on the maps to indicate where it should be (it will be a tiny bit narrower where it hits each person depending on elevation, but still should get everyone).
Holy Damage Batman: 4d8 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 2) = 19 and blinded for one round.
Text of spell HERE. Does full damage to evil alignment, half damage to neutral (Neutral can also roll a DC 17 Will Save to reduce the damage to one quarter). DC 17 Will Save to avoid the blindness effect. (No damage or blindness to good-aligned creatures.)

Carrakas |

Carrakas grunts as all the various bolts land true, drawing vicious wounds without his armor to protect him. All attacks landed, no DR, so 18 damage taken total.
Fort: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29
"Enough of this foolishness..." Carrakas mutters, before touching the brooch around his neck. It explodes outward in a sudden rush, as plates of metal encase the tiefling's entire body. As the helm slams around his face, he squeezes his hand, and a translucent shield appears in front of his left arm.
The newly armored tiefling crouches down, and little bolts of lightning trail from his body to the ground, before he jumps, the lightning shooting out behind him as he shoots up into the rafters. He ends up standing directly in front of the nearest rafter opponent (green), and swings a sword made of pure lightning at him.
OK, so, I was 25ft away from him horizontally, and 15ft away from him vertically. Through mathing, I figured out that I was just under 30ft away from him in a straight line. So, I'm using Blade Rush to move 30ft in any direction, and attack, using electric blast, which targets touch AC
Attack vs Touch AC, PA: 1d20 + 17 - 2 ⇒ (18) + 17 - 2 = 33
Electric Damage, PA: 4d6 + 2 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6, 1, 3) + 2 + 4 = 17

All the mill workers on the floor give a mixed scream of terror and pain as they drop their bows and start stumbling blindly away from the spellcasters. Jaed manages to hit one fleeing man in the back but the sudden flight throws Millsy's aim off balance as she misses him entirely. The red one provokes an AoO from Millsy
Those in the rafters seem to fair better, even as Carrakas leaps up and viciously slashes one of them. The garuda, who seems entirely unaffected by the spell yells angrily at the fleeing mill workers and decides the spellcasters are the greater threat, aiming his bow at them as electricity arcs across him.

Party is up again. I believe Marzela and Lily are both unconscious, Marzela needs another DC 14 Fort save or take 1 Con damage and Wis damage: 1d2 ⇒ 1 from the poison. Millsy gets an AoO, the workers on the floor are temporarily blind and fleeing. The blue guard in the rafters is temporarily blind.

Marzela |

I do have electricity resistance 5 (Aasimar thing called Celestial Resistance), so that reduces the damage for me to 20 rather than 30, so I am still barely up.

Carrakas |

Carrakas roars in anger as the birdman hits the women below. He is calmed somewhat when he feels the healing burst of energy coming from Marzela below him, but his anger at the birdman is no less. He gathers up his power, swirls of earth and rock circling around his armored form, before rushing at the birdman. Trailing bits of rock and stone fly out behind him as he shoots over the rafters and behind the Garuda, before forming a hammer and swinging at the creature.
Using an Earth Blast Blade Rush to position myself behind the Garuda, and using the Pushing substance infusion to allow me to do a bull rush combat maneuver if it connects, using my CON instead of my STR. What I would like to do is bull rush him off of the rafters, but not sure if I can push him diagonally like that or not.

Bull Rush: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (14) + 11 = 25

Jaed Zandorias |

Jaed has just enough time to congratulate Lily for making the guys on the ground floor flee before the garuda shoots his arrows. "You filthy bird. I'm gonna pluck you! Come down here, you coward!"
Depending on the outcome of Carrakas' bull rush Jaed will start climbing the wall or he will move towards the fallen garuda if it falls not too far from him. Will update his position later. By the way, can the looms provide any cover against the shooters in the rafters?

Marzela |

I have the resurrection subdomain, so I have the "Gift of Life" ability, but according to THIS thread, it is really an utterly pointless ability, and wouldn't help you, because you would just die again in 8 rounds (no matter what we did to help you). (I still don't understand why it is written that way. I can't think of one situation where it would actually help anyone interpreted that way, so it is a waste of a level 8 ability.)
I also have Rebuke Death, but that just heals someone with less than zero hit points... it doesn't bring them back to life. And if you were alive, I already healed you enough that you would be in positive HP. You would think the Cleric would be able to do something, but alas...
All that said, happy to use my Gift of Life power on you if you want 8 more rounds. :)

DM Puppet Master |

@Jaed: Carrakas' attack missed, so the garuda is still up in the rafters. You could probably get some cover by the looms, but it's going to depend largely on where you are vs them. You can use the actual items drawn on the map to give you an idea of what there is to hide behind, but they could also move to negate your cover.

Jaed Zandorias |

With that DC, Jaed has a small chance of successfully climbing the wall at the first try. It will be very silly to waste turns trying while people are getting killed so I'll try to clear the ground floor while Carrakas takes care of the rafters.
Jaed's first instinct is to go after the garuda but the wall seems too hard to to climb. Blood thirsty, he decides to go after the fleeing guys in the ground floor. Double move through the difficult terrain.

@Carrakas: Does your shield count as magical for shield bashes? Also, are you blade rushing the green one that you're currently standing next to? Making sure because North is to the right, not up.
@Finnrick: Yes, I believe you have to roll each time; the srd refers to spell resistance as "AC for spells". Plus I would imagine if you'd failed the first roll, you'd want to be able to try again instead of having a spell that couldn't affect him. Also, you still need to do Millsy's AoO and action.
Garuda reflex: 1d20 + 14 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 14 + 1 = 30
The garuda once more dodges the brunt of Finnrick's spell.
