You are goblins of the Licktoad tribe, who live deep in Brinestump Marsh, south of the hated man-town called Sandpoint. Once, other goblins tried to burn Sandpoint down, and they would have been legends if they had succeeded. But they didn’t bring enough fire, and got themselves killed as a result.

Yesterday, your tribe discovered that one of your own had been using forbidden arts and was engaged in one of the greatest of taboos--writing things down. In fact, rumor holds that what he was writing was a history of your tribe! There’s no swifter way to bring about bad luck than stealing words out of your mind by writing them down, and so your tribe had no choice. You branded the goblin’s face with letters to punish him, which is why everyone calls him Scribbleface now, and then you ran him out of town, took all of his stuff, and burned down his hut.

That’s where things got interesting, because before you all burned down his hut, Chief Gutwad found a weird box within the building. Inside was a map and a lot of fireworks--fireworks that immediately came to use in burning the hut down. Then, this morning, Gutwad announced that tonight there would be a feast in order to drive out any lingering bad luck from Scribbleface’s poor decisions. But perhaps even more exciting, all of you have been secretly invited to meet at Chief Gutwad’s Moot House. Why would the chief want to speak to you? It can only mean that he’s got an important mission for you all... one that the other goblins of the tribe couldn’t pull off. This could be your chance to go down in Licktoad history!

The chief ’s Moot House lies at the centre of the village. It is a veritable museum of Licktoad heroics--crammed with trophies such as stolen weapons, shiny bits of treasure, and the brine-pickled bodies of dozens of brutally slaughtered small furry animals (mostly dogs). His Mighty Girthness Chief Rendwattle Gutwad rules Licktoad Village from atop the great Teeter Chair, which is 6 feet high. By tradition, Chief Gutwad does not speak directly to his subjects. Instead, he employs an advisor through whom he whispers instructions, for Chief Gutwad claims that the words that come out of his mouth are so mighty that they might frighten away all the words in the heads of lesser goblins. Only his duly appointed advisor, an overdressed, pompous goblin named Slorb, can handle the might of the chief’s words without fainting from fear.

Currently, the six of you are standing outside the Moot House, waiting to be summoned inside. Numerous other goblins of the tribe peer at you from discreet distances or around the corners of other huts. They always look away if you look at them and try to pretend they weren't looking. No doubt they are jealous of you.

Lurking goblin

Chuffy waits patiently while trying to keep away from Foofelah and keep his pets away from Reta.

Old Foofelah is completely decked out for the grand occasion, her wide-brimmed hat perched precariously atop her pigtailed wig sitting crookedly on her mostly bald head and surrounded by a miasma of cheap perfume sufficient to choke any small vermin that might approach. She is in the middle of a long diatribe to no one in particular about the sad state of the modern Licktoads. "When Foofelah was a girl, Teeter Chair was twenty mans high. They cut a hole in Moot House roof for it to stick through. In my day, if Chief goblin talked directly to anyone, they fell down dead! Some exploded. Sad day for Licktoads when they didn't listen to Old Foofelah about this Chief."

Reta dressed in a "fine" corset with the bridal veil to match, catches a glimpse of those goblins staring. "I SEES YOU. DON'T THINKS RETA DOSEN'T SEES YOU." She threatens them with a nasty look.

Listening intently to Old Foofelah, Reta becomes engrossed in her story. Her eyes go wide with excitement at all the exploding goblins and such. "TELLS RETA MORE ABOUT EXPLODING GOBLINS, OLD FOOFELAH. MORE!" She claps her hands while jumping up and down. Stopping abruptly, another thought crosses her mind. "OOOOOO, MAYBE BOUT EXPLODING DOGS. YES! EXPLODING DOGS." Her eyes narrow at the thought of dogs as drool runs down her chin.

Chiggo slips up next to Chuffy, leaning on him slightly as the smell of alcohol comes off him in waves to rival Foofelah's perfume. "Chiggo not stands old crone Foofelah neither. Chiggo wish she had squishy bits." He mimes kicking and laughs.

Of course, Chiggo speaks way too loudly, and Foofelah and Reta have no trouble overhearing.

At the end of Poog's speech, Chiggo belches quite loudly and long, though it's likely the two have little to do with the other as he follows his burp with a deep swig from his metal jug.

Old Foofelah beams at the one goblin in the tribe she likes. "You is good girl, Reta. Always speaks very clearly and shows respect to Old Foofelah. Reminds me of me when I was a girl, only not quite as pretty. You come see Old Foofelah's picture of exploding goblin here in my fortune deck. I drewed this from life," she says very emphatically, pulling her cards out of a sack and finding the one she is looking for. "Saw a goblin spoken to by old Chief and never forgot it."

Ignoring the other stupid goblins, Reta is intent on seeing what Old Foofelah pulls out of her fortune deck. Eyes wide open at the fantastic picture, "OOOOOOOO." She claps with excitement. "RETA LOVES EXPLODING GOBBIE PICTURES!" She looks around and sees a few other goblins standing around, not liking how close they are to her. "OLD FOOFELAH! OLD FOOFELAH! CAN YOUS MAKE THEMS EXPLODE?" She randomly points behind her, eyes wide with anticipation.

Reta's fingers point to a pair of young goblins who have been watching intently. They shriek and run off, one of them tripping over another goblin who was "hiding" on the ground (actually just lying on the ground in plain sight). "No!" that goblin yells. "You no see me here. You go away!" But the young goblin has already gone.

The one lying on the ground looks up at Reta and Old Foofelah. He stands up slowly and waves. "Me go now, too." He runs off.

"You knows what Chiggo hear," Chiggo says to Chuffy loudly enough for the women to hear, "Chiggo hear that Foofeleh part elf. That why she not died yet."

Reta snorts at the two frightened goblins. "SCARDIES!" Then hearing some other talking noise, she looks to Chuffy assuming it was him. "YOUS GOT SOMETHING TO SAID, CHUFFY!" She pulls her meathook out and waves it threateningly. Then noticing Chiggo is standing right there. "CHIGGOS TO STOOPID TO SAID STUFF! IT MUST BE YOUS." She eyes him warily.

Pussl Ticknest and his wolverine listen quietly to the other goblins and their bold pronouncements. Dressed in a badly tanned suit of leather armor festooned with leaves and feathers and tufts of hair from various animals, he has smeared black mud over his face and armor. He wears a cap made of spotted badger skin and carries a simple wooden club.

Scowling at Old Foofelah, Pussl grunts at Chiggo's words. "Pussl think Foofelah die many moons ago, just not know it yet. She be just bones but worms don't like taste of her."

"It was he," Chiggo days, pointing at some other random goblin behind him. "He say too that Reta part dwarf. That why she so fat and loud with tiny titties!"

Chiggo laughs drunkenly and slaps Chuffy on the back with his (unlit) torch.

Female Goblin Sorcerer (elemental: fire) 1

Old Foofelah remains unaware of any part of the conversation not shouted. She glares angrily after the goblins fleeing from Reta's pointing finger. "Old Foofelah could explode them, but would make a mess all over Foofelah's beautiful hair," she explains, stroking her wig lovingly and knocking out a puff of dust and a few bugs. "Reta should have been here in old days before the new Chief. Licktoad Tribe was full of sound of exploding goblins." She sighs nostalgically.

Reta fumes. Leans in close to Chiggo, "RETA THINKS YOUS LIAR! RETA NOT SEE RANDOM GOBLIN THAT SHE COULD HAVE HEERD!" She pokes at him with her meathook. "I HEERD CHIEF GUTWAD IS GONNA TO SPEAKS TO YOUS, CHIGGOS." She grins maliciously and then makes an exploding noise with her mouth, while using her hands in an exploding motion.

When Old Foofelah starts speaking, Reta immediately returns her attention to her, places her meathook back in her pack and forgets about the two unimportant goblins. Admiring Old Foofelah's pretty hair as she speaks, "FULL OF EXPLODING GOBLINS?!" Reta's eyes go distant from daydreaming of what it could have been like. "RETA WISHES SHE WAS AROUND DURING DAYS OF EXPLODING GOBBIES." She says, her hands clasped together, still daydreaming.

Chiggo looks uncomprehending. "No, stupid. They is only this big."

He holds up his hands to show something very small. Realizing that Reta isn't even listening to him, he turns to the boy goblins and says, "Me wish both them back in day when gobbies go boom."

Enough arguing!" a high-pitched whiny voice says. Slorb, the chief's advisor steps out of the Moot House. "You supposed to be great heroes and great heroes don't argue."

He peers at each of you in turn. Stepping up to Reta, he says, "You too loud. You not speak so loud in front of Chief Gutwad or he get angry at you."

He moves next to Old Foofelah. "You...um...you too old. You shouldn't be so old in front of Chief...um...no...wait...um...never mind. You be nice to Chief Gutwad and not say anything about making him splode."

He spins around to face Chiggo and points a finger right up to Chiggo's face. "You no burp or kick Chief in squishies. Or Chief do same to you, but worse."

He turns to Poog and starts to point a finger at him, but quickly pulls the finger back. "You! You...you...you put in good word with Zarongel for Slorb."

Grinning, he turns to face Pussl. "Zarongel like Slorb! Slorb always worship him good! But you...um...I don't know you much, so you just be best behaving."

Finally, he turns to Chuffy and grimaces. With a gulp, he says, "You just be nice. No trying to stab Chief in back or he stab you in back."

Then he addresses everyone. "Chief Gutwad commands you go in now. So go in and show respect. WELL, HURRY UP!" Although he tries to make the last sentence as loud and intimidating as he can, his high-pitched nasal voice makes it more of a comical screech.

After seconds of daydreaming of exploding goblins, Reta finds herself bored. She looks around for something to torture. Not seeing anything of interest, she pulls her meathook back out and removes one of her caterpillars. She then places it on the end of the hook to watch it squirm. "RETA NEED TO GET RATSIES. THEY SQUEAL MUCH BETTER." She smiles.

When the advisor comes out to reprimand them all, Reta takes her caterpillar and puts it back with the others, along with putting her meathook back up. Then she quickly hurries into the hut, but only after Old Foofelah goes first.

Female Goblin Sorcerer (elemental: fire) 1

Foofelah irritably pulls her long ear toward Slorb's flapping lips. "Reta! What fat Slorb say?" His final WELL, HURRY UP is loud enough for her to hear, however, and she draws herself up in a dignified manner, taking up her two sacks. "Fat Slorb should not disrespect Old Foofelah by mumbling at her. Old Foofelah oldest Licktoad goblin EVER! Foofelah was there when fat Slorb was borned. Never seen such a small squiggly-bit. All Licktoads thought he was girl goblin for first day." With that pronouncement, she enters the Moot House.

"FAT SLORB HAS SMALL SQUIGGLY-BIT! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! THOUGHT FAT SLORB WAS GIRL GOBBIE! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NO SQUIGGLY FOR FAT SLORB!" Reta laughs and laughs at that while clapping, yet, somehow manages to calm down just before entering.

Chiggo scowls at Slorb but doesn't respond. He lurches into the hut and finds himself a place against a wall, subconsciously covering his squishies.

Chuffy puts away his dog-slicer. He waits for everyone else to enter the moot house before going in himself. He gives one final look at the gawkers before disappearing inside.

Pussl straightens and snaps his fingers to order the wolverine to follow him. He bared his teeth at Foofelah's comment about Slorb's birth and snorts in barely contained laughter.

Reaching into his robes for a pair of toads whose limbs had been tied together, he walks into Moot House.

Reta growing impatient, remembering there was at least one more stupid goblin that was suppose to be in here, "WHERE'S POOG!" She growls and steps halfway out of the moot house. "HEY POO!" She smiles at her cleverness, "WHAT YOUS DOING?! GET YOUS FINGER OUT OF YOUS NOSE AND GETS IN HERE, STOOPIDS!" She points emphatically for him to enter, then returns to her spot next to Old Foofelah. As she does she glares at Chiggo and mimics her explosion sequence from earlier. Smiling maliciously again, with hope in her eyes.

The Moot House has only a single large room. At the far side is the Teeter Chair, and sitting precariously atop it is Chief Gutwald. The Chief is a small, but fat goblin. He barely fits in the chair and it looks like he and the whole fragile chair could collapse at any moment. For now, however, the chair holds. Slorb hurries over to the chair and climbs onto a stand beside.

"His Mighty Girthness Chief Rendwattle Gutwad has invited you here," he begins in his nasally voice, but Chief Gutwad holds up a hand to silence him.

"NO!" the Chief says in a deep, booming voice. "I speak to them."

Slorb looks surprised and about to say something, but then he lowers his head sheepishly.

“You all be heroes," the Chief says, still in his booming voice, loud enough for even Foofelah to hear. "Each of you." He pauses for a moment and looks at Foofelah. "Well, you say you are. I not so sure, but you here anyway. You are all best Licktoads but for me. And maybe but for Slorb. That you aren’t fleeing in terror from mighty sound of my voice is all the proof you should need. Yet soon, all Licktoad goblins will know your might, for I have picked you for a dangerous mission."

Chief Gutwad pauses for a moment and looks at your expressions. Then he continues. “You know about fireworks and map we found in Scribbleface’s hut. Fireworks were fun. But map is more fun. It shows a route to a place near the coast where Scribbleface found fireworks. And it says there are more fireworks there!"

He pauses again to look at your reactions, then continues, “I want them for Licktoads. You all go get them tomorrow. Tonight we have big bonfire to burn bad luck away from you, and we play many games. Much fun. Tomorrow you fetch me fireworks. If you meet men, you make them dead. If you meet dogs, you make them dead. If you meet horses, you make them dead. If you meet Lotslegs Eat Goblin Babies Many, you maybe should run. And if you not find fireworks, you not come back or we feed you to Squealy Nord!”

Squealy Nord is a fearsome boar who lives in a muddy pit in the middle of the village.

Knowledge (nature) DC 10):
Squealy Nord is really just a hyperactive piglet.

Knowledge (local) DC 10:
Lotslegs Eat Goblin Babies Many: There are plenty of giant bugs in the swamp, but of late, the giant spider known as Lotslegs Eat Goblin Babies Many (known more often simply as “Lotslegs,”) is the most notorious. The giant spider lives somewhere in the marsh between the Licktoad village and the coast.

Pussl accidentally squeezes his toad fetish gift a little too hard in surprise at Chief Gutwad's voice and the toads explode in his hand, covering his fingers with toad guts and gore.

He perks up at the mention of fireworks and killing, however.

The threat of being fed to Squealy Nord makes him sneer. Pussl does not fear Squealy Nord.

"Men will be dead. Dogs will be dead. Horses will...be dead." Pussl doesn't like the idea of killing horses unless he has to. He always wanted a big horse for himself to trample those who angered him.

"Pussl bring back fireworks an' set night on fire!" Pussl raises his hand in a fist, bits of toad dripping down onto his face. Stink growls excitedly and fills the hut with a foul stench.

During the speech, Chuffy begins to edge around the room trying to get behind Chief Gutwald and the Teeter Chair.

Old Foofelah is a bit surprised when the chief speaks to them himself. She turns and looks at the other goblins to see if any of them are fainting dead away. "Gutwad not like old Chief Snagtooth. Only made toad explode," she points out to Reta. "Should have listened to Old Foofelah, left him in swamp and tried again."

"Maybe Old Foofelah finally die on this mission," Chief Gutwad says. "If she die, rest of you leave her in swamp. We no want her body back here. Slorb! Give them map. Then you all leave Moot House. Except Slorb. He stay. Prepare for feast tonight. Then you go on quest tomorrow morning. Go!"

Slorb comes forward with the map, holding it out in front of him. He looks around at each of you, a bit unsure who to give it to. However, when his gaze falls on Poog, he moves forward and gives the map to him. "Slorb worship Zarongel good! You give good word to god!"

She draws her dogslicer out at the thought of such vile words, and points it threateningly at him. "RETA HATE DOGS! HATE DOGS!" She stares at him through narrow slits. Chuffy runs from behind the Teeter Chair and goes outside. As he hurries out, he gets the thought that he should at least take a look at the map so he finds a spot to wait for Poog.

Chiggo slips out as well, scowling at Reta and making a fire-breathing gesture at her, which basically looks like he's pretending to kiss her, then moves to join Poog.

Once everyone is out of the Moot House, Slorb closes the door behind you. You gather round Poog to look at the map.

The map is relatively simple, showing little more than the Licktoad village, the old shipwreck on the coast that supposedly contains the fireworks, and the creek that runs between the two locations. By following the creek, you should be able to easily reach the old wreck. Unfortunately, the old wreck is also located in the part of the swamp that all Licktoads know to be the territory of Vorka the cannibal. (There is, of course, no writing on the map. It's all done in simple pictures.)

One of the greatest terrors of the swamp, at least to the Licktoads, is old Vorka, a ravenous cannibal goblin who, legend tells, was once the wife of a Licktoad chieftain. She murdered and ate that chieftain, as well as several other goblins, before she was driven out of town many years ago. Since then, the story says that she’s lived alone somewhere along the coast to the west of Licktoad village, and while she’s never returned, most goblins who go missing in that part of the swamp are assumed to have been eaten by the cannibal.

"Must watch for Old Vorka. Hard tell her from Old Foofeleh. Maybe Reta Bigmouth gets eaten?"

"RETA NOT SCARED OF VORKA. RETA EAT VORKA FIRST." She states boldly as an even better thought crosses her mind. "OOOOOOO, OLD FOOFELAH CAN MAKE HER GO, 'BOOM'!" She does her patented explosion scene again, with the same excited look upon her face.
