Thank you all for joining the game, I'm happy to have you all. I'm still planning to get started in full force in a few days, but want to give a chance now for character introductions. Jump into gameplay and introduce yourselves and banter. I'll post the mission introduction once I feel everyone is good to go.

Let me know if there are any abilities that give you extraordinary senses to detect things or any abilities that might be a bit slower to resolve on PbP (for example, abilities that interrupt enemy turns).

This is the first starship scenario I've run on PbP. I'm going to be thinking on that as we head toward any potential encounters you have. I will have additional questions regarding the alternate starship frame and will message the player about it so I can give proper answers to the group.

Not in this case, the Computers check isn't to forge a single document as build out a full identity. It would aid with customs, but not if and when any casual background checks are done on the party.

Oh, also Alera has a +14 piloting skill (thanks Ace-Pilot Theme!) So... piloting is handled?

2 ranks and +4 dex means she could be a gunner in a pinch too...

ALSO, because I know it doesn't come up very much. The sunrise maiden's artifiial personality can roll skill checks! Specifically Bluff, Diplomacy, Intimidate, and Sense Motive, all with a +1 modifier (tier of the computer, I think). I'm thinking the AI could aid in certain skill rolls. Or at least just get along with Max and Hido very well.

Also remember we ahve a Mk1 duo-node computer, so two rolls per turn could/should take a +1.

Port, starboard, and aft weapons have a range of 'short' (5 hexes).
turret and forward weapons, as well as our sensors, have a range of 'medium' (10 hexes)

Also the boon gives the party as a whole the chance to reroll ONE d20 roll during combat and this is on top of any rerolls we might get for other reasons... so we can choose who can use it, and when. If someone flubs something critical, perhaps?

I do hope this isn't start of three rounds of natural 1s for Engineering checks.

I'm no expert on starship combat, but although you are still in an advantageous position I wanted to give some unsolicited advice just to make sure people are happy with combat as you can possibly be.

Not Thought Out Unsolicited Advice. Feel free to ignore:
Don't necessarily feel locked into your role just because that is where you started or because you spent a turn moving positions. For many of the starship encounters I've participated in as player and GM, it is normal to abandon posts to attempt another strategy.

I'm not sure of Xenal would do well just yelling at people from the captain's chair. With the number of gunners you have right now, the odds might be better with Xenal in a gunner seat, but it is an option at any point to take over the Captain role if you want to attempt something that isn't a gunnery check.

Other characters might also serve well as gunners as well. If there is a point where you feel your position isn't having a useful impact, you can try moving to a gunner seat. It becomes more taxing on the piloting as you add more gunners, but, technically, you could fire all five weapons this round with a successful flyby (largely due to their being two targets in the field). It is also fair to mention that your best gunner is, technically, Alera with a +6 vs Boaty's +4.

Even though someone needs to steer the ship, you don't need someone in the piloting role if that extra attack is preferred over stunts. I omitted minor actions, actions you can take addition to your role if no one is in that position (pilot or gunner). If no one is is the pilot position, Boaty or Alera could make the ship move half speed (and decrease maneuverability to requiring 2 movement before every turn) without any loss of AC. It would also mean you would need to move before the enemy vessels since you are guaranteed to lose the initiative roll. Piloting isn't a trained only skill, another character can also fill that roll at a far lower bonus but have the full maneuverability and speed, as another cost though the AC/TL of the ship would drop by 2 by anyone who pilots without ranks (because both Boaty and Alera have 2 ranks, their ranks add to the AC as long as they are in control).

Hido could continue scanning the vessels, scan isn't like a knowledge check where it is a one attempt check for what you know, you can continue to accrue more knowledge about the ships. Admittedly, you might already know their entire capabilities from their actions thus far. Also though, since you act at the same time as the pilot, you are capable of redirecting shields in response to movement and suggest that movement if you want to redirect shields to an arc that both ships are facing to preemptively block incoming damage (although a flyby would allow them to attack other arcs).
This is more difficult if you post before the pilot, but there maybe be opportunities to give a condition where you might take a different action.

It might be, even if you look at all the options, you will still prefer the way you are handling it and that is fine. I just want to make sure no one feels locked into a single action for the entire combat if you aren't enjoying that position.

I will for sure rejigger my skills after this to make room for a rank in piloting, it's too useful for an INT based character not to grab a rank as a class skill.

I was thinking about playing with the shields preemptively but with two foes it is hard to plot, maybe once the dice decide to cooperate and we knock one out :)
