Tityanna:
Donal's pulse begins to race and his eyes close as Tityanna takes his hand. His hand and arm almost melt into her own, but as she reveals her full name, it clearly takes him by surprise. A puzzled look crosses his face as he starts to speak but then closes his mouth. It appears the usually outgoing smith is at a complete loss for words as he stares at the young noble woman sitting, intimately holding his hand.

After a few more seconds pass he recovers himself and finally speaks softly, "It matters not to me who your father is, for my heart is already at your mercy."

Then leans in, brushes his lips gently against her ear and whispers softly,
"See how in their veins all becomes spirit:
into each other they mature and grow.
Like axles, their forms tremblingly orbit,
round which it whirls, bewitching and aglow.
Thirsters, and they receive drink,
watchers, and see: they receive sight.
Let them into one another sink
so as to endure each other outright."

Leaning back he holds her hand in his. His blue eyes dance with happiness and passion as they look into hers in an effort to explore the depth of the young woman sitting with him.

The night passes uneventfully and the dawn breaks cold and gray. A chill wind blows out of the north confirming Kams' prediction of more harsh weather to come. The rain does offer a brief respite for a few hours in the early morning, but then returns as the caravan starts to get under way.

Thad:
Ursula is up early to see to your wound at the end of your watch. Changing the bandages, she inspects your leg and gives a satisfied nod as it is clear the wound is healing quickly. She reapplies the poultice and a new bandage while saying, "It seems to be healing nicely, but it might be best if you stay off of it for another day." She offers a shy, friendly smile, "I wouldn't want you to tear the cuts open again."

Once she's finished she passes along that the other wounded man is still feverish, but that she's been able to keep it under control. Then she hands over a piece of parchment, "I found this while checking his wounds this morning. I thought you and the others might be interested."

The paper has been folded a couple of times, and is stained in several spots with blood, mud and water. Clearly marked at the top is the seal of the Mayor of Rostov and the House Surtova crest. Under both is the same sigil as that marking the man's cloak. It appears to be an order for a Kesten Garess from his superior officer. A few snippets are still legible.

"Proceed to Oleg's Trading Post and secure the....Any trade goods should be....Under no circumstances should you or your men engage....arrival of those bearing the charter."

The order is signed by a Sir Sander Oritov, Commander Rostov Militia.

Kams:
Yori Meyerson arrives at your side almost as soon as you're up and around. He's a worried look on his face and quietly asks if you could come take a look at the horse that was injured yesterday.

Looking at the horse you see that the wound was cleaned and covered well by Yori, but it looks red a swollen around the edges. Yori says in a strained voice, "I was wondering if you might be able to help or perhaps talk to Master Zavac or Mistress Ursula to see if they could do something. I've not wanted to bother them, what with the other injures." He runs a gentle hand across the horse's flank, clearly upset and worried about the animal.

You did a fine job here, Yori. The wound was well tended, but this rain seeps its way into most everything. The cut and infection may need more help than my meager abilities can provide. I will talk with the others most assuredly. We do not want to see such a magnificent animal suffer needlessly, when assistance is so close at hand. He pats Yori on the back, You've done good, we'll make a fine horseman of you yet.

Donal Egillson:

Tityanna colors like a beet when Donal's lips touch her ear, proving that she is still little more than a girl in some regards.

"Even your poetry makes reference to order," she recognizes, breathing and pulse a bit faster than normal.

Tityanna will sit and watch Donal repair the crossbow for a time, then excuse herself to set up her tent for the evening so they do not have to sleep in the rain.

In the early hours, after stowing her tent, seeing to Puck and eating a rather uninspiring meal of trail rations, Tityanna settles on the damp grass, then leans forward and curls it between her fingers as her eyes slide closed. She remains in that position for a quarter of an hour before rising again, and pulling the cowl over her hair and eyes as the rain begins falling again.

Yori's face beams with delight at Kams' approval, "Thank you, Master Kams. I did my best." He pats the horse on the shoulder and laughs when the animal reaches around to give him a long lick up the side of his head. "Alright Socks, one more scoop, but that's it."

He scopes small amount of oats from a sack and drops it into the horses feedbag. Giving the horse one final pat on the side of the head, he then moves on to start getting the other horses hitched to the wagons.

Walking over the Warren the next morning, Donal holds out the crossbow. "I've reset the catch, and filed the channel smooth again. I also adjusted the tension on the string so that it should have the full range again." He sets the string and gives the trigger a pull to show a nice smooth release, with no rattle or other indication of malfunction."She should work like a charm from now on."

While getting ready to travel, Kams will study the skies, wind, and trees for signs of the weather ahead. He will then take a moment to mention to the others, especially Zavak, about the wounded horse. Hopefully one of them will be able to help the horse. We should be slow and steady today, we don't want Socks or any of the other mounts getting hurt today. Mounting up, Kams comments, I'll ride ahead and scout out the road for potential hazards. I'll post warnings as we go. Ke'll also keep an eye out for tracks or signs of others passing through the area, be they worgs, wolves, or other travelers.

Kams:
The weather is going to continue being wet and cold for the next day. In fact, you can count on heavy rain the following morning and early into the afternoon, but then things will slowly start to dry out. By the time you reach Oleg's, things should be drying out and warming up.

You don't see any hostile tracks only a few deer or other harmless creatures. You do however, manage to spot a couple of deep mud holes in the road that could have seriously damaged or hindered the wagons. You mark the locations and the others are able to navigate the caravan past the hazard.

The day and next night pass uneventfully, but the weather continues to be wet and cold. The following morning the road is in pretty bad shape as much of the surface is now a muddy mess. Despite the weather and more difficult travel, Fulton passes along that he and the others would prefer to keep moving rather than stay put unless there were some serious objections.

Nothing dangerous happens during this next short section of the trip, but please feel free to continue any RP if you like.

Noting how well the wound in his leg is recovering, Thad finds himself greatly respecting Ursula's skills as a healer and follows her recommendation religiously. He rides in the back of the cart for another day rather than subjecting his leg to the rigors of horseback riding. During a brief afternoon stop stop when the caravan rests the mounts and eats a cold lunch, Thad asks the charter bearers over and shows the letter that Ursula found:

Thad: Yes, that was in addition the normal 1 and being in the wagon does count as bedrest.

Thad enjoys the opportunity to chat and pass some time; sitting in the back of a wagon with only an insensate, fever-ridden militaman for company makes the hours creep by. He seems rather well versed on the topic of banditry and law. I suppose that depends on just what sort of banditry they've been practicing. There've been no less than 31 different punishments for banditry in the stolen lands, and they largely depended on just how much it affected the local nobleman's coffers. Some bandits were simply rogue soldiers who would collect a "tax" from traders using the roads but were tolerated because they kept the roads clear of monsters like the wolves we faced yesterday. Others... some bandit gangs were crueler than any monster hunting for its next meal. Those usually ended up a victim of their own success with their careers ending violently after a company or two of professional soldiers were sent to root them out.

Personally, I admire the views of the followers of Sarenrae. I think that given an honest chance most bandits would prefer a life of honest work and regular meals. If we end up fighting bandits I'd first offer them mercy and a plot of land before sending them to the gallows. What I did for Gregor, I'd do again without a thought. But killing men, I've little stomach for it. What do you think, what sort of law would you see in place?

"As a naturalist, I haven't given it much thought. I believe that nature is basically good in a balanced sort of way--if that makes any sense. People are more a product of their environment than anything. My thoughts are, put the bandits in an environment that encourages them to be productive and live in harmony with their fellows, if they do not take the opportunity, they are like the Wargs with a basic evil that cannot be removed. These need to be 'culled' from the herd. Everyone probably deserves a second chance, but no more. These pioneers cannot afford the resources to give anyone more than one chance at redemption."

Sovereign Court

Stephanus ponders the note for a moment, sorting through the plausible meanings of the broken message.

"I suppose we may not know what these men were sent to 'secure' until we see if they've been to Oleg's yet, and if so how they behaved when they were there. The most optimistic reading says they were sent ahead to secure the road and wait for our arrival... a reinforcement for the trading post while we focused our attention on exploring and reopening the trade road further south."

Stephanus perks up a bit at the talk of justice and the redemption of the hypothetically reformed bandit.

"So are you asking what law should look like in the lands south of Oleg's, or are you asking how we'll react in a fight with bandits? I'll happily poke holes in anyone directly opposing our expedition with violence. But the question of the form of law is more fun."

"Ideally, a man's penance must lead to a reconciliation with the offended. This is an axiom that should underpin the laws and punishments of a society. At the point where no deed will offer the offended any consolation, that is the threshold beyond which ostracism becomes a minimum sentence. Otherwise a society will come apart."

"Will we form a court for the trial and sentencing of our bandits? Must we build a jail? In combat a man is jury, judge and executioner, but beyond Oleg's there will be no place to hold the captives we take.

Female Human Sorceress (Fey) 1/ Oracle (Life) 1

"One might also interpret our charter's language that we have no authority to create our own laws," Tityanna opines, hearing Stephanous speak of courts. "We are to 'strive against unrepentant banditry and other unlawful behaviors'," she quotes verbatim. "Legality dictated by the Dragonscale Throne, which issued our writ. Any dereliction from his codex may prove dangerous," she warns.

"Lest you mistake me, gentlemen, and sir Knight," she inclines her head to Thad, "I have no illusions that the Surtovas are in such a grand position at court that they can spare a contingent of armed men to enforce their claim in the Golushkin much less south of Rostland, but they have more than sufficient economic advantage to starve us for ore and minerals if none are forthcoming in our own plot. And should we anger them, we would face the military might of Mivon and the cunning of Pitax's Bard King Irovetti alone."

Before the caravan gets underway in the wet, muddy conditions, Ursula examines Thad's leg again and this time her face beams a smile of satisfied approval. Running her fingers lightly over the entire area, she gently and deftly checks for any other signs of trouble or damage.

Finding no problems, her eyes sparkle with a small sense of pride as she says to Thad, "You took well to the Bloodroot and Whitestar Flower and your leg should be fine now." Pressing her lips together in thought she adds, "You may want to stretch and work the leg a bit. It could be a little stiff and weak from the rapid healing over the last couple of days."

Letting her hand linger on Thad's leg for just a second she says, "I'm sorry about the scar, but I think it is a handsome reminder of your bravery and honor." With a bit of a blush at her last remark, she turns to her other patient and starts to check on his condition.

After a few minutes she announces that the man's fever has broken and that he'll likely be awake and able to talk later today, once the herbs she's been treating him with have worn off.

"A wet but wonderful morning. Let's get this journey to an end so these settlers can see their new home."

Warren unhoods his eagles, checks on their health, and sends them aloft.

Having been on watch with Thad and been in combat with the four others, he decides to talk to Tityanna.

"Tityanna, I look forward to settling this land. I am naive when it comes to understanding the motivations of our sponsors. I was just hoping we would be left alone. I would appreciate any insights you might have into how they may interfere with our enterprise."

Female Human Sorceress (Fey) 1/ Oracle (Life) 1

Tityanna smiles softly at Warren's approach, and inclines her head in a gesture indicating that she has heard and sympathizes with his position.

"At present, I cannot begin to answer with any manner of confidence how the noble houses might interfere," she observes sweetly. "Their... greed impresses upon the people as a whole a distinct lack of unity. Factions amongst houses prey upon each other as readily as their traditional enemies," Tityanna inhales, holds her breath and then slowly exhales.

Tityanna looks to Donal's wagon for several moments and her smile fades about the edges. "In truth, I am scarcely what one would afford the title of an authority in politics," she admits, her voice soft. "Speculation upon the throne's motives... is like only to infuriate and distract from the opportunity presented us," she continues, her honey green and vaguely cat-like eyes alight.

"If naught else our experiences thus far have proved how much we rely upon each other for protection, and for progress. We've all the trappings of a fine community at hand. That, before all else should be the focus of our efforts."

Tityanna:
As you glance towards Donal's wagon you see the smith bent over his makeshift bench. A few tools for delicate work are scattered around him, but you can't make out exactly what it is he's working on. Looking back over the last couple of days, you've noticed he's spent a lot of time doing...something. This is in addition to constantly wrestling the wagons through the mud and performing a number of minor repairs to keep the settlers moving.

Stephanus, the elderly halfling woman, Duella, greets you in the morning with a smile and a quiet compliment. "Good morning, young master. Through all of our early travels I've not had a chance to comment on your wonderful storytelling. Tell me, have you had formal training? I'm a bit of a theater lover myself and you've certainly a way to make the stories come alive."

She absentmindedly pushes a slipping set of spectacles back up onto her nose, "I've tried my hand a couple of times, but I was told I had little talent. But more than being in the play, it's always been a dream to direct." She looks at you with thoughtful consideration, "The ability to tell a good story is a talent that shouldn't go to waste. What do you think about collaborating together to organize some entertainment for the others once we reach our destination?"

After checking on her elf and human patients, Ursula walks over to the horses and gives Socks a quick examination under the watchful eye of Yori Meyerson. Offering a smile to the boy she shows him the vastly improved wound which is no longer red, but a nice shade of pink and healing nicely. She then let's Kams know that the horse should be fine in another day or two.

"You seem to have taken young Yori under your wing and have a better knowledge of animals than I." Handing Kams a small jar of ointment, she grins and looks over at the boy fondly and says, "Make sure our young beastmaster puts a fresh, thin coat of this over the wound every morning for the next two days. That should see the wound totally healed and keep any infection from taking hold."

Not quite successful in his attempt, it's possible to catch a glimpse of polished gold glittering in the daylight.

"Ah...well...just a...ummmm...project...I've felt the inspiration and desire to complete." He turns a bit red as he speaks, looking into Tityanna's eyes.

During a quiet moment before the party gets underway again, Porter Deepsilver steps over to Alaina a warm cup of tea in each hand. The dwarf is his usual colorful self, only much of his clothing is now covered in mud. All except his hat, which despite the rain, wind, and mud remains as bright and crooked as ever. He offers one of the cups to the young woman saying, "I thought you might enjoy a bit of warmth to cut through the chill this morning."

Once the group gets underway, travel is treacherous as rain steadily pours from the sky making many parts of the road a muddy quagmire that can easily trap or damage the wagons. Fortunately Kams and Warren are able to spot most of the truly dangerous areas and can find a way around without much trouble.

Around midafternoon the sound of the rain and blustery wind is replaced by a steady thundering roar that grows louder as you move further along the road. The source of the sound becomes evident once you top a small rise overlooking a shallow valley running between the hills. The roar is that of a rushing, churning torrent of water flowing through the center of the valley. It crosses the road only a few hundred yards from where you’re standing.

A mud covered, and damp Fulton pulls out a rough map showing this as the usually minor and easy crossing at Sandy Veil creek. However, what is usually a 15 foot wide, three to five foot deep, slow moving creek, is now a fifty foot wide, torrent of muddy fury. The ford is completely submerged as the water easily reaches the trees and brush usually well above the normal creek bed.

A rickety wooden bridge spans the creek, its beams and pilings rattling ominously in the swift moving current. The center section of the bridge sits a mere hand span above the rolling flood waters, but does seem to be holding against the tide. Fortunately, the bridge is just wide enough to accommodate the passage of the larger wagons.

A large log and debris jam just a few dozen yards downstream has created a makeshift dam that's clearly contributing to the severe flooding around the ford and bridge.

Perception DC15:
Several of the bridge pilings vibrate ominously as the water rushes past. As you’re watching you see a large chunk of the bank just this side of the nearest piling give way and tumble into the torrent. It’s unclear how long the whole bridge might last under these circumstances.

Perception DC20:
An odd current appears in the creek near the center of the bridge. For just a second it looked as if some of the rapids near the center of the creek disappeared and then returned a little further downstream. Your eyes strain against the wind and rain to get a better look, but you are unable to see anything else from this distance.

Perception DC22:
Looking closer at some of the trees in the debris dam, it appears they have been cut recently rather than simply uprooted by the flooding.

Perception DC25:
A well hidden path leads west towards the debris dam. It's too wet to determine any tracks, but does look like it has been used within the last week.

His eyes grow a little wide as their wagon at the rear of the caravan finally tops the rise and he is able to see the bridge and flooded area. "I was just about to say we were making good time considering, but this might cause quite a delay."

Tityanna:
Donal smiles back at Tityanna, "I've just a bit more work left, before I've finished." He blushes a bit saying, [b]"It may seem a little odd, but I tend to keep certain artistic works to myself until I'm certain they're finished. And this one has...extra meaning to it, so I want it just right."

He takes on a mischievous look and says, "Besides, a man has to have a few small secrets."

Seeing the others getting underway, he jumps up and deftly starts putting things away, "I didn't realize morning had already passed so quickly. Perhaps you're right, and this project is distracting me some."

After a few minutes he's packed up and underway with the rest of the caravan.

Bringing his wagon over the top of the rise, Donal pulls up on the reins and sets the brake. Jumping down into the mud he joins Fulton and the others as they look at the map, the bridge, and high water.

Hearing Alaina's comment he nods in agreement, "It seems you may be right. Either the gods are playing a mighty set of tricks, or someone doesn't wish either of our expeditions to be successful."

Male Human Ranger

Turning to the group, It seems others have interest in these lands ahead, or in stopping your progress. If you wish to turn back, say so now. I for one, do not wish such schemes to prosper. These lands have been granted to this group, they are yours for the taking, and by Erastil you should see them grow, flourish, and passed to your progeny. Diplomacy check 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Eyeing the dwarves in the line of wagons, Do you have something we might use to clear this jam? Something with a powerful kick, as it were?If not, perhaps we might fashion a ram of our own, then use the force of the waters to propel it into the best spot to clear the blockage, pinbowling as it were.

Turning back to the group, Even with the jam cleared, the bridge may be unsafe. I recommend unhorsing the wagons, save one, then walking yourselves and what goods you might carry to the other side. We shall then do the same with the mounts, one by one crossing the span. I will lead each horse, then each wagon across, unhitching and hitching again as I go. It will take time, but we should be able, if cautious, to get everyone over safely. Master Kingeagle's allies shall watch over this side of the bank, to make sure the wagons are safe during the crossing.

Turning to Tityanna and the others, Unless your worthy lords, ladies, have another plan. Mine is but one simple proposal. I will defer to you in all save that I shall be the one taking what risks may come. I have the most skill with horses, and much favor to amend. This crossing seems as good time as any to start.

Kams:
You examine the path more carefully but the rain has simply washed away any useful tracks. The path appears to lead away from the road toward the base of one of the nearby hills. But after fifty feet or so, use lose the trail in the rocks, grass, and brush.

Warren:
The terrain as you move off of the road slopes toward the high water. The ground is muddy, rocky and quite slick. As you get closer to the debris pile the conditions only get worse.

Warren how close to the shore and the log jam do you get?

Alaina:
How close to the bank do you get?

Map of the River Crossing

dm:
that would depend largely on the ground and how firm it is. If it seemed solid enough to take the weight of her horse without crumbling, then I would say she got within 3-4 feet of the bank. She would have stopped sooner if the horse was having trouble with its footing, whether from slick ground, or giving way though.

Alaina:
Approaching the bridge and bank, the ground gets increasingly soft, muddy, and slick on either side of the road starting about 25 feet from the water's edge. If you stay on the road itself, the ground is a little firmer until you get within 10 feet of the water. At that point the ground is much more treacherous due to mud and a slippery surface.

Off road closer than 25 feet: Reflex (or Ride if mounted) DC10
On road closer than 10 feet: Reflex (or Ride if mounted) DC10

As you all explore and consider various options, one of the eagles let's out a warning cry as he circles over the bridge, dam, and flooded creek.

Taking a minute to think, Porter answers Kams' question with a bit of hesitation, "Well...I've something that might do the trick, but the substance is a little unstable." He goes off and opens a well packed and padded chest from the back of his wagon. Very carefully he pulls out a glass beaker filled with a clear, oily looking substance and slowly walks back over to Kams. Holding the beaker gently and steadily in both hands he says, "This should do it, but we need to get the container fairly close to the center of the dam without shaking it up too much."

Stephanus Perception DC10:
That chest Porter just pulled the beaker from is the one you've often sat on or right next to when riding in their wagon!

dm:
Eep, time to invest in some ride skill. Lol. Ride check, following the road to 10 ft: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Warren will start to summon an ally of nature. As it is a full round action, he will wait to discover where the disturbance is from at the start of his next turn to act. Most likely the creature will be a waterborne creature.

Not wanting to get close, he is happy to have the refurbished crossbow to fire at range.

"I think we have company."

Elf Paladin 2

--earlier--

Thad's mind replayed morning's conversation, poking at it like a toothache. He'd suffered the attention of many healers over the years, but few indeed had called him handsome or blushed while providing their ministrations- and those few... perhaps he had misjudged the widow's state of mind.

Despite Ursula's urging to work the leg, Thad is reluctant to spend much time walking in the sucking mud. His thigh seems to be getting quite a workout from staying in the saddle, and he makes a point of standing up in the stirrups frequently to stretch the leg.

--currently--

On arriving at the bridge, Thad rides up to the front of the wagon train to survey the challenge ahead of them.

Perception check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Kams's suggested course of action strikes him a sound and Thad nods his assent. At the hawk's cry he looks to Kams and, noting his concern, strings his bow and rides between the first and second wagons where he can get a good view downstream as well as up and down the road.

Warren stays on solid ground. He knows something is up and won't jeapordize his footing or his mobility by moving to difficult terrrain.

Male Human Ranger

Kams will dismount, leaving his horse near the rear of wagon 1, at H15, untethered, and move to K20 on the map. He will draw his sword as he moves, and he still wears his buckler, but will take no overtly offensive action just yet, defensive moves only.

Ride check:
Fast Dismount 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Perception Check:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Oops:
At least Kams didn't fall off the horse. He dismounted as a move action, then proceeded as a move action to K20, drawing the longsword as a free action.

Alaina: I placed you on the map at R14. Please feel free to adjust if that placement isn't correct.

Warren: Please let me know your map coordinates?

All, to make it a little easier to keep track of the map I've placed a link on the Campaign Info tab.
