Weakly Godlike Entity

On their return from Kyonin, the party enters Gallowsmith's residence and finds the usual spread of food. Prester Gallowsmith rises from the mosaic in the same way as he did before and greets you warmly, his light tenor voice carrying a note of elation that had been absent the last time any of you spoke with him. "Besmarial?" In response, the Cassissian angel who had accompanied you on your mission flits over and into the column of mosaic tiles in Gallowsmith's form, which flies apart into a cloud of separate tiles. After a moment, it reforms into Gallowsmith. "Ah. That was quite the adventure, wasn't it? I am pleased that you all came through so well. Your success has changed the face of the pattern of rifts, and many have vanished. As you may have noticed, the Great Rift over Absalom has partially closed, so it is no longer quite so unbearably hot here. And that is merely the most obvious of the changes you have brought about.

"But the great work continues, and while you were gone something changed here: an adversary--someone working to forestall our efforts--has been revealed. I was attacked here while distracted with the challenge of returning your companion Xavier's body; at first I thought that it was a coincidence, but many of my counterparts in other Golarions were beset at the same time. The attackers were simple mercenaries, hired for a few coins on the streets of Absalom by someone unusual in his complete unremarkability. I continue to investigate, and I have configured my plan to include defense of some of the more critical anchors. Lyekeli, I shall need you, Krolmnite, and Ava to journey to Osirion and join a party of investigators there. Duncan--I have been told there is a message for you, if you will but listen."

The gruff dwarf breathes deeply in the silence following Gallowsmith's words. His eyes widen in awe, staring away at nothing in particular. "Thank ye, lord. Thank ye!" He clears his throat and looks around at the rest of you, eyes moist. "I'm going home! It's been an honor t'fight at your sides. I'll not likely see you again--may Angradd's blessing go with all of you." He turns and walks out, head held high and an unaccustomed smile on his face.

Gallowsmith looks after him with a smile of his own. "Conner, Dashel--I have a task for you two as well. It's rather delicate, I'm afraid, but it's my hope that it won't be as onerous as your last. Just in case, though, I have requested two others to join you. Drovic and insert name here have served the cause well in other worlds; I think you'll work well together.

"Now, the task. As I told you before, each alternate Golarion has a keystone on which its integrity rests. With the destruction of the Dark Road I have perceived that the identity of the keystone can change, depending on the other keystones. For a short time--perhaps a week, perhaps two--the keystone in another fragment is going to be a...well, allow me to show you." The tiles making up his form again swirl together and coalesce into the shape of a small hut in a forest. As you watch, it seems to grow closer, as if you were walking towards it. Your viewpoint reaches the single door, which opens into a candlelit room. In the room, a woman works at a counter, preparing a meal. A man sits next to a cradle, rocking it with one foot while a baby slumbers within. The viewpoint moves across the room and approaches the sleeping baby. Gallowsmith's voice comes from all around you. "She is the key, for a little while, and must be protected. But she lives in what would be Cheliax, in our world, on the edge of the Whisperwood. You must go there and guard her. But there is a small complication--she and her parents must not learn of your watch, for if she's disturbed she may remain the keystone beyond her time."

"Well met, I reckon it is all but impossible to fill a good dwarf's shoes even for another dwarf! We will drink as many pints as we can hold to honor me friends, and your departed dwarven friend!"

Weakly Godlike Entity

Grungar enters the room while Gallowsmith is speaking. "Ah, Grungar. Welcome." The dwarf sees the other party members, along with a man who seems to be made of mosaic tiles. His hair is the white of sea-foam and his robes the blue of the ocean. He is clearly older, but stands straight and tall. He continues his reply to the cleric. "Dashel, the Cheliax to which you are going is not the way you are thinking it will be. In many ways it is better, but you in particular may find it difficult to deal with. In that Golarion, the Earthfall that ended Old Azlant did not occur. Instead, the Azlanti struck first against the aboleths, who were never again able to muster a threat against Azlant. But Azlant did not long survive, even there. They and the Empire of Thassilon destroyed each other with magics that eventually smashed both Old Azlant and most of what in our world is Varisia. That is not the only difference; with no Earthfall, there is no Inner Sea, there was no Aroden, no Starstone, and thus no Iomedae. What we call Cheliax was settled by followers of Old-Mage Jatembe and the people who in our world settled Qadira. In addition, Grungar, you will stand out...with no Earthfall, the Quest for Sky never took place, and dwarves are as strange to the people there as drow are to us. On the marginally brighter side, you will not encounter orcs.

"The likeliest threats to the keystone are bandits, who are endemic to the area. In our world there is reported to be a gate to Hell reputed to be in that wood; I do not know enough of its history to guess whether it might also be found in the other world. There is also a passage to the Darklands, so creatures from below might also threaten her." He shrugs. "Or there may be no threat at all."

Weakly Godlike Entity

"The closest rift to that particular alternate is near Brastlewark. Getting there will call for some travel inside this Cheliax, but those are perils you know. I will give you a means of detecting that rift." Something that looks like a compass flies out of the cloud of mosaic tiles and into Drovic's hand. "This has been sensitized to the rift, and will point towards it at all times." Following the compass comes Besmarial, a Cassissian angel. Dashel and Conner, the angel looks a bit more robust than it had previously.

Oh, I didn't know I was here currently, my bad!

The lithe form has been sitting quietly in the corner, acknowledging with a nod when his name was said. Drovic raises a hand to catch the compass when it flies towards him, standing and lowering his hood. Drovic has salmon colored strait hair that falls to his shoulders and outlines his thin face. His eyes are a pale green that match the paleness of his skin. He's short and thin for an elf, looking like a wiry runt. Crossing from his right temple through his left eye is a pale scar that stretches back all the way to his ear and continues, disappearing into his hair. "'They must not learn of our watch', does that limit us to the shadows or may we approach them under false pretenses?"

"When we're leading a crusade against demons in an open battlefield you can point us where to go. But right now we're in my territory."

I also have a wand of CLW as well as an emergency potion of CMW. Honestly the cost for a second level spell just isn't worth it. I'd rather have two wands of CLW for 1500gp than one of CMW for 4500gp. Yeah it's better for in-combat healing, but I don't think it's worth the price tag.

The in-combat necessity is worth the cost especially since Dashel is a combat oriented cleric.

"The main objective is to protect the keystone, not to lead her into darkness or subterfuge. When your bleeding out the blessings of Iomedae may frown upon your territory."

Dashel is not goody-to-shoes but he does worship the goddess of the sun. He not lawful but he is good. He does what is good and right without bias for or against order.

Oh yeah, I understand, respect, and agree with that. Drovic doesn't. :)

"If this goes as planned the only influence we'll be on her life is keeping it in one piece." Drovic drops the religious argument, knowing there will be plenty of time for that on the way.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Drovic:
For several years, you worked for one of Senator Karthis' chamberlains, killing those who incurred the Senator's displeasure while keeping his hands clean. (Though there was the occasional Qadiran spy ring; there, the credit generally went to someone the Senator wished to curry favor with, a fact which did not bother you as long as you were paid.)

All of that changed when the rifts began to open. You were out on a mission, but you heard what happened when the great spider came up out of the earth under Oppara, killing everyone in the Senator's household before the Lion Blades were able to put it down. At that point, you had nothing but what you'd been able to secrete in a small safe house--the drained husk of your only contact and employer lay discarded in the ruins of the great mansion, flesh and bone alike dissolved by the spider's digestive juices before it drank him as if he were a wineskin. You were no closer to your ultimate quarry.

It was then, as you stood outside the ruins, that a thrush flew through the night sky (Odd... you remember thinking, they aren't night birds.) and alit on a branch near you, hopping back and forth from one foot to the other. A message tube was tied to one leg. You extended a hand and the bird flitted over to you, landing on your hand and allowing you to take the cylinder. Inside was a message addressed to you.

"You are invited to a meeting at my home in Absalom, to discuss the end of the world. Do not worry; you will be compensated for your work--with information or coin, as you wish." It was signed by Prester Gallowsmith, and sealed with a symbol--three interlocking circles with a spiral in the center--that you have never seen in your arcane studies. It nonetheless seems familiar to you in a way impossible to describe.

Against your doubts, or perhaps because of them, you've decided to attend. You choose your travel methods carefully, but you know that you may never pass this way again.

In the house of Prester Gallowsmith, you find something more of purpose. The scholar's grand purpose--nothing less than reversing the course of the rifts that plague the world--seems to you to be hopelessly naive, but nevertheless you can see that the damage caused by the rifts would not spare you; it is in your best interests to cooperate. Besides, the pay is good. Gallowsmith reserves you for those keystones best repaired by stealth and guile (not to mention a quick dagger in the dark), and as a rule you have only worked alone or with a single partner.

This time, though, is different. You had just returned from a mission a few days before and were decompressing when a group of Gallowsmith's other operatives returned. You weren't familiar with them--there are so many--but you know from Gallowsmith's conversation that they succeeded at a particularly difficult repair. The team split up, as they so frequently do, and you were surprised to be called back into service alongside a competent enough archer, it looked like, and a priest of Iomedae. The fourth member of the group was one you knew by reputation as a capable straight-up fighter, but one you'd never teamed with. (He wasn't there at the time, but you have long since learned that Gallowsmith has many ways of knowing things.)

And that should catch you up. Let me know if you have any questions.

Dashel:
Gallowsmith has another CLW wand, a +1 ROP, and an amulet of natural armor +1.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Grungar:
I'm thinking that you'll have done one mission for Gallowsmith already; you were on your way back to Absalom after it was done when you were attacked by suspiciously competent and well-equipped bandits. You were the only survivor. But the preservation of the world is all, so you set your sorrow at the loss of your companions aside and make haste to Gallowsmith's house. Perhaps sensing what is best for you, Gallowsmith has apparently already committed you to another mission. The elf is one you have heard of by reputation, as your party's scout had worked with him previously. The other two weren't known to you.

There is one other thing. As you approached Gallowsmith's home, you met another dwarf leaving. He claps you on the shoulder with a clash of steel, murmurs "Angradd's blessing go with ye'--fear not, for your friends are in the Forge-Fire's hand.", and he walks on. But your spirits were lifted by the encounter, and you turn to call out to him. He's nowhere to be seen.

Drovic, you've used similar compasses before.

In response to your question about how to approach the family, Gallowsmith pauses to consider before answering. "It is possible that speaking with them under false pretenses would not disturb the child; I would not do so if it can be avoided, though. What we wish most to avoid is a pitched battle too close to the house, or anything else that would force the family to leave the area or be killed." He looks a bit abashed. "There is still so much to learn about the rifts...what their ultimate cause is, the deepest nature of their relationship with the keystones, how the keystones are determined...much was illuminated when you killed the Builder and ended the Dark Road, and I hope to learn more from Besmarial's observations on this mission. If there is nothing else, the Sea Nymph is docked in the third octant of The Docks; tell the Captain, whichever one of them it is this time, to take you to Laekastel, and you can go upriver from there to Brastlewark. You had best be hurrying--time is short. Is there anything else?"

Should be easy enough to watch from silence. Let's get moving.

Weakly Godlike Entity

With little time to lose, the party heads for the Docks district. It's easy to find the Sea Nymph, a small cutter whose rakish lines promise speed (albeit at the expense of comfort). As you approach the ship the apparent captain comes on deck, a grizzled half-orc with a hook hand and scars that would seem to indicate that he's had at least one close encounter with a ship's keel in his past. He grins as he takes the note from Gallowsmith, though the grin dies away as he reads over it. "Laekastel? That's a Chelish port...not sure about that." From the steering deck a Taldan sailor calls out, "Maybe you'll meet someone you know, ma--" At the half-orc's glare the Taldan grins. "Captain, I mean. Captain Kaul, sir." He gives the party a wink as the half-orc, mollified, motions you on board and starts bellowing orders. The crew soon has the vessel under way with a minimum of fuss; the halfling lookout seems to have eyes in the back of his head, and the Taldan is an able enough helmsman. Once clear of the harbor, he gets a rather manic and expectant grin, and the captain pulls out a small feather. "Hur hur hur...yer mosaic man gave us this fer fast trips, and he says this is time to use it. Now tie yerselves down, for we'll not come back if you go over the stern!" He activates the fan feather token and the wind comes up from behind the Sea Nymph....

The next eight hours pass in a blur, one long melange of creaking masts, lashing lines, spray over the bow, and flapping sails, punctuated by an occasional laugh from the Taldan. Every now and then you hear a "Hur-hur-hur!" over the wind, and see the Captain pacing back and forth near the bow.

You sail through the night, the Captain taking the helm, and by midday the next day you make Laekastel.

And the DM has to run off, so the rest of the trip will come later.

Drovic shadows the party, his silence and soft footsteps an odd presence that lends a morbid sense of security. At the boat he gives Captain Kaul an acknowledging nod, one that recognizes his authority on the boat. After a few minutes of sailing it becomes clear the pale elf has never set foot on a boat before. His pale skin becomes paler and has a tint of green that blends eerily into his eyes as he leans over the back of the boat, trying to calm his queasy stomach.

Weakly Godlike Entity

Laekastel harbor is a busy place, with a constant flow of refugees from the Chelish heartland. Their complaints ring all too familiarly in your ears, all boiling down to some monster or army (or army of monsters) emerging from a rift and laying their town waste. Captain Kaul will have no shortage of paying passengers for the trip back to Absalom. In all the confusion, no one pays attention to the party (except for a footpad or two, who learn the hard way that your backtrail is well-guarded--the ones who approach from the front steer clear after nothing more than a hard stare from the obviously experienced and dangerous trio who lead).

It takes some doing, but you're able to find a boatman who's willing to ferry you up the river to Brastlewark. "Might be dangerous," he says, "but there's plenty of folks willing to pay for space on the way back."
