You're allowed as long as you're healthy.

"Mulluq, before you go, drink this." Sol hands the tiefling his potion of cure light wounds.

Booam hefts his axe and prepares himself to follow closely behind the paladin.

Wendaug and Jod each nock an arrow and follow the melee combatants.

Thinking Kira and maybe Sol will want to be between those two groups and the other spellcasters will bring up the rear, including Ghroth watching our collective backs while Hannick is on autopilot.

Sounds reasonable

So Mulluq and Booam first, then Kira and Sol, then Wendaug and Jod, then Kaygan, Rhok, Hannik and Ghroth?

Unless Sol wants to be in back, that’s the plan.

I'll go in the middle.

The adventurers form up. The stairs, as before, form a choke point and they know that something waits for them above. With the previous battles and the lack of stealthiness of most of them, whoever or whatever it is will be aware of them and will hear them coming. But there is little else for it but to climb up and take it down.

Mulluq:

Spoiler:
Mulluq detects a strongly evil aura lurking above.

Since Mulluq is basically stomping up the stairs and whatever it is will definitely hear him and be able to ready an action, Mulluq may ready an action to go fully defensive if he is attacked, if he so desires (since it's a reasonably obvious thing to do and in keeping with his tactics). I mention it as we are moving into the action.

Mulluq and Booam lead up the stairs. As they reach the top, a huge axe swings at Mulluq.

Readied action of the whatever, attacking Mulluq:
1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 9 - 2 = 14 to hit, damage 3d6 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (2, 3, 3) + 6 + 4 = 18

Guarding the room, and the closed door at its end, is a hulking bull-headed humanoid covered in hair a peculiar purple-red, like blood. Its wide horns are a shiny polished black, like ebony, and its eyes glitter with feral intelligence. As it recovers from its attack it bellows loudly.

Abyssal:

Spoiler:
"The intruders are here!"

Roll initiative please. Also, please note the addition of the third floor to the map.

Male, Pitborn Tiefling Warrior of Iomedae's Holy Light 4/Guardian 1 (AC: 21 [T: 11 /FF: 20]; HP: 52/66; F+9, R+5, W+7; Init: +1; Perc: +0 [Darkvision 60'])

Mulluq is reluctant to accept the potion offered him, as he is wont to do in so many instances. Taking stock of what he has, being no more ability to lay on hands, and only a single heavy potion himself, he acquiesces. The potion fills him with resolve and a feeling of Iomedae being with him.

Potion of CLW 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9

Climbing the stairs, shield up and sword leading, he is given pause when his sense touch the degree of evil in the room. He holds his shield high, and prominent to catch whatever swings at him as he enters. Seeing the size and scope of the creature within the room, he knows this is what his goddess needs him to do.

He actually has not typically gone total unless he was trying to draws the enemies attacks, so sadly, he would not likely do so on first moving in.

The eidolon seems to be flexing and testing every muscle in his body, admiring his new weaponry, and a bit confused with the loss of the exceptionally long tongue. But he's ready to jump into the mix once all of the girl's friends let him through...

With the size, fiendishness, and potential ferocity of the beast standing before them, Mulluq knows what he should do. He invokes the name of his goddess, asking for her strength and divine protections, before he strides guardedly around the creature. His goddes must have found him fit to serve her in this exchange, as his swing is both bold and true, possessing her divine inheritance.

I presume Aubrey said the initiative order through Booam because something we don't know about will happen after our mongrelman friend's turn. I would have posted Tuesday otherwise.

I was thinking the same.

Nope, carry on - do not confuse laziness with subterfuge.

Ranger (Infiltrator, Skirmisher) 4/Champion 1 | 41/43 hp | AC 18, T12, F16 | Saves F8, R7, W4 | Perc +11 | MP 4/5 | Effects:

Wendaug seizes the opportunity and hustles up the stairs. When she reaches a point where she can see their foe, she realizes the danger of the creature’s reach and hesitates.

She calls down, ”No room for a shot. Jod should bring his sword.”

Heeding her advice, the ranger moves up the stairs, prepared to draw rather than shoot.

Wendaug moves to AI23, now acting just before Jod.
Jod stows his arrow, leans his bow in the corner at the top of the stairs, and quick-draws his falchion as he steps up to AJ24.

The minotaur swpies at Mulluq as he moves to flank it.

AoO on Mulluq
1d20 + 9 - 2 ⇒ (2) + 9 - 2 = 9 to hit, damage 3d6 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (4, 6, 2) + 6 + 6 = 24

Again, the blow is clumsy, chewing up the floorboards where Mulluq was standing. Mulluq's riposte is brutal. His sword seems to hunger for the creature's destruction, slashing open its belly and sending ropy viscera spilling out in gory loops. The beast's unearthly stamina keeps it upright, stumbling amid its own guts. Booam's charge sends his axe high, shattering one of its horns and only narrowly avoiding splitting its skull.

An AoO has been taken by Mulluq. I mean, it might have Combat Reflexes, but what's the chance...?

Consequently, Ghroth and Wendaug may wish to amend their actions.

Just so it’s not overlooked, we posted at the same time, sir. I did not roll an attack because I thought moving up the stairs might have required a second move action to complete.

Indeed, please see my post above.

I hate these choke point stairways.

Hearing Wendaug's advice, Sol changes his plan to follow Kira up the stairs. Instead he flattens himself against the wall to let others by, stows his bow and readies his shield.

At least Kira has shown herself to be a melee monster with her new sword.

I've gotten so used to the cryptic init entries for those situations like "Something Bad 17+" that it didn't even occur to me that we were waiting for a surprise.

Yeah. It's like these jerks built the place for defense or something! It has been tough. Do the stairs count as double movement or standard?

I assumed double. If not, I believe I can make an attack with Jod.

As far as I know, there is no rule for stairs costing double. There is a rule for running down needing acrobatics, but that's it on stairs rules.

EDIT: Oops, if they are "particularly steep", they count as difficult. But only then.

In light of that understanding of the rules, I went back and looked at my route more closely. If I can pass diagonally from Wendaug's space to my endpoint, that's six squares of movement and I can attack. If I have to continue to the corner before turning, that's seven squares and I do not have the necessary action to attack. If I have a standard action remaining after reaching my endpoint, here's an attack:

Falchion: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 +2 vs evil outsiders

Damage: 2d4 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11

As the minotaur staggers, Jod finishes the minotaur with a slash from his blade, hacking through bone and sinew to sever its hand. Its axe drops with a crash to the floor and it collapses, spurting blood. The door it was protecting lies undefended.

End of combat. 200xp each. After Booam and Mulluq it only had 1hp.

Jod wipes the gore from his blade and stows it once more before readying his bow.

Wendaug steps down the stairs so she need not yell. ”The path is clear. The beast spoke something when we arrived, however, so it seems likely that another surprise lies behind the door.” She heads back up.

The two of them position themselves to fire through the door when it opens, but wait for the rest of the party to see what the plan might be.

Mulluq waves off the suggestion, "Use your magic on Booam, as I do not fare well trying to hide from my enemies, and if there is evil beyond this door, I will take little time before making my presence known."
