Instantaneous Spells & Continual Use

Rules Questions

For spells with instantaneous duration such as Stone Discus and Iron Stake, is it possible to retrieve the conjured projectiles and reuse them with the same effect as their initial casting?

Or are these meant to be one-and-done spells that create lingering items after their first use?

The Exchange

We discussed iron stake about 18 months ago.

As written, yeah, the created items would stick around. As intended, almost certainly not. They should disappear. Selling the created items as trade goods is one issue, but the far bigger one is that iron stake creates a weapon whose damage scales with CL. A 6th level wizard could cast this once and give the party barbarian the created 3d6 weapon to use forever.

Liberty's Edge

Both spells flung the item at the target as part of the casting. That isn't retained, as an Instantaneous Conjuration (Creation) spell doesn't maintain its momentum forever.

The spells fails in saying that explicitly, but we must suppose that most of the damage is from the speed at which the item travels, not an intrinsic quality of the item.

So, the only conclusion we can reasonably reach is that the Iron stake, after the casting, will do the normal damage of a stake, albeit one made of special materials.

It is the same thing with the Stone Discus, which should do damage as sling bullets made of special materials.

None of the spells say the item does that damage when used as a hand-held weapon.
Check the damage dealt by an arrow or by a stone when used as a hand-held weapon to see the difference between a flung/fired object and the same object when hand-held.

Alternatively, they are fired as projectiles so they are destroyed after hitting.

I agree with Diego Rossi that the damage from the spell is a result of the spell, and the surviving items would not have the same effect. Since neither of the spells factor in the STR bonus or penalty to the damage that makes it clear the damage is from the spell.

Dark Archive

i agree, iron stake would leave behind a stake, i'd even let it keep the material part. but it would just deal normal cold iron stake damage.
