Scarab Sages

This is a new series on Max, spinning off the Robert Pattinson led The Batman film, with a nearly unrecognizable Colin Farrell reprising his role one of Batman's more well-known enemies.

The first episode dropped this week, and I finally got around to watching it last night. The story picks up not long after the events of The Batman film. Carmine Falcone is dead, and the city is in chaos from the criminal power vacuum. Alberto Falcone shows up. So does Sofia Falcone, having been release from Arkham where she was committed for being the serial killer known as The Hangman (which was right out of Dark Victory). We've also got Clancy Brown as Sal Maroni.

The fist episode was really good, and sets up not a superhero story, but a crime drama. I'm not a huge fan of the so-called "grounded" Batman, but I'm not too bothered since this series seems like it's going to distinctly lack Batman (except via the occasional name drop). And Farrell's version of Penguin was, in my opinion, one of the better things to come out of that film (other than Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman). Farrell does a great job again here. So does the chick playing Sofia Faclone - she comes across as just barely giving the appearance of being hinged in any way.

I look forward to the remaining episodes.

Although, to be honest, I would have loved to see a Batman tv series instead. With actual Batman and super villains.

THEY FILMED THIS NEXT TO MY JOB!

This has taken something of an odd turn …

Scarab Sages

Another solid episode last night. Great performances by Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Even the kid impressed me. It was cool seeing Shohreh Aghdashloo as Sal Maroni's wife. She's awesome. Adding elements of a Persian mob in is an interesting twist.

I've already seen some articles speculating that Sofia's doctor is more than he seems. Some folks are saying they might have him be Hugo Strange. That could be interesting. Especially if they're going to use this as lead-in to another Reeves Batman movie.

Also, I'm just going to throw speculation of my own out there and think maybe this new drug that's part of the underlying plot might be Venom.

Scarab Sages

Three episodes in now, and I'm beginning to think this show is some of the best superhero comic related TV that I've seen since the Netflix Daredevil show. Even without any superhero appearing. The flashbacks with Victor and his family were brutal and sad. The kid portraying Victor continues to do a good job, holding his own (I think) against some other great actors. They have a really great seen where his PTSD comes through. The interactions with Sofia and Oz are great, and we get to see there's something a bit more between them. Which it looks like they'll be going into that next episode. And Sal's wife seems to be turning into a major player. Which, given the actress, I'm glad to see it looks like they won't waste her talent.

Scarab Sages

Holy Crap! That was a great episode. This was a Sofia Falcone centric episode, and that little gal did a magnificent job. In the first few seconds I saw Cristin Milioti as Sofia, I didn't like it. I wanted the character to be more like her comic book version physically. But Milioti's performance, and what they've done with the character, have been really awesome.

My only concern is that she could come to overshadow the main character himself. That would be a shame, since Colin Farell is also putting in a great (and probably better) performance.

My only other concern is the rumors this show is supposed to lead directly into another Pattinson Batman movie. While I wouldn't mind seeing another one, I'd be concerned they're leading to Sofia being the main villain. She's a good character, but not worthy of taking the place of a more established villain.

Scarab Sages

I'm still holding out hope that one of the rumors about the Julian Rush character proves true. That could be really cool.

Cristin Milioti is a really good actress! She's also a very talented singer and musician ...

My first exposure to her was on the final season of How I met Your Mother

I gave it the three episode try (two and a half, technically) but I'm just not a fan of crime drama even if I enjoyed Sofia. I want my Penguin to have a tux and a variety of novelty umbrellas.

Scarab Sages

I can understand that. Typically, I prefer a more faithful adaptation. In this case I think I'm just enjoying the performances too much. Not to mention there isn't much else new on worth my time to watch.

The latest season of Superman and Lois just started.

Oh, yeah! I forgot about that. In my defense, though, only because it's on regular TV. I'd have to watch it on a schedule. When it drops to streaming, I'll watch it.

Huh. It's on Max over here.

I'll have to do a deeper dive on Max then. Usually, if they have new episodes of a show they'll pop up somewhere on the home page. I haven't seen it but will have to look closer.

Thanks.

Scarab Sages

As for Penguin - Holy crapcakes on fire. That was one brutal. So now the board is set, the sides are chosen, and it's only a matter of time before the two sides come to blows.

My only criticism of the show at this point would be this - The things that happened in this episode are definitely the type of stuff that would catch Batman's eye. So to not have him even hinted at doesn't make much sense if you're going to have this lead into the next movie (which is something I heard).

This series is to Batman as Andor is to Star Wars - excellent in its own right but also fits nicely in the previous legendarium.

I slogged through Gotham but this show is so much better it makes me regret all over again all the hours I wasted watching Gotham.

Maybe they wanted to see how well it caught on before tying the Batman into it directly. One can only hope!

Scarab Sages

Damn! Another great episode.

Francis steals every seen she's in. The actor does a wonderful job. Her mental breakdown reminds me a lot of what my own father went through, minus the gang violence of course. The scenes with Victor and Squid, then Victor and Oz, were chilling. I almost felt sorry for the young man.

It was a crazy way to end the episode as well, but that just means things are going to get even crazier in these final two episodes.

I'll be a little sad when this series ends. It may not be much of a comic book adaptation, but the great story and wonderful acting more than makes up for it.

Scarab Sages

Damn! And I thought the actual finale would be explosive.

The showrunners once again wanted to show everyone just how cold Penguin can be. That look back at his past was a bit chilling.

And all the stuff going down in present day was crazy. The fight between Sal and Penguin, especially the way Penguin provoked him. Sofia's reaction to it all. The way Francis' personality flips.

Also, I'm more convinced than ever the rumors about Dr. Rush might be true. I have a feeling he's going to try and take care of Sofia's loose end on his own.

Once again, however, that Batman is nowhere to be seen, nor even hinted at, is the one thing they're getting completely wrong. Especially with what happens at the end of the episode. That would bring the Bat out to play, no doubt.

Scarab Sages

Holy crapcakes on fire, Batman! That was f'd up. Such great performances, though. I'm glad to see they'll keep Sofia Falcone for a potential return. And I was really bummed out about that one death.

Overall, the series was great. A really solid, well-written story. Phenomenal performances (if Colin and Christin don't get Emmy nominations at the least, it'd be a crime). My only criticism is the same one I've had all along - With this kind of major crime war going on, Batman would have been more involved.

Makes the Top 5 as a TV series from this year for sure. And I agree, we needed to see more Robert Pattinson.
