Remaster Shield questions

Advice

I have some questions how the remaster rules work with throwing shields. Relevant remaster rules that I could find:

Player Core pg. 274 wrote:

All shields, unless specifically noted or described

otherwise, must be strapped to your arm and held in one
hand"

and

Player Core pg. 268 wrote:
Interact ... Detach a shield or other item from you using one hand.

1. I read this as saying that I need to detach throwing shields (e.g. meteor or razor disc) before throwing them. Is this correct?

2. Assuming, I have to detach the shield, does my non shield hand need to be free to detach a shield or could you detach one with something like your teeth?

3. For a meteor shield, it mentions "quick release" straps. Is this just flavor or or is there a relevant rule that it's free action or something?

4. In order to raise a shield that's currently on the ground, would it take 3 actions. 1. to pick it up with a free hand. 2. strap it on with an interact action. 3. Raise it. Does that sound right?

Lantern Lodge

Pre-Remaster rules also don't really tell you how a action-economy for thrown shield works.

There is the Shield Throw trait which says:

A shield with this trait is designed to be thrown as a ranged attack. When thrown, the shield is a martial thrown ranged weapon. Its damage dice and type are the same as its shield bash attack, but if the shield includes an attached weapon or integrated weapon, you can choose to attack with it instead when you throw the shield. You add your Strength modifier to damage, as typical of a thrown weapon. The trait also includes the range increment.

Nothing in the trait seems to override the normal rules for taking off a shield so you can throw it.

Also, nothing in the Meteor Shield or Razor Disc say anything about the action economy to throw the shield.

Can't say its raw, but I would (if I were the GM) treat these shields as having the same action-economy mechanics as the Throwing Shield adjustment/modification from Knights of Lastwall, namely that:

You can quickly remove the shield by spending a free action as part of the Strike to throw the shield. (i.e. Free Action to detach and 1 Action to Throw)

Alternatively, I guess the GM could make you pay the 5 gp to get the modification to your shield so you can detach it as a free action, but I wouldn't bother.

Note that the modification does not reattach the shield for free. You can throw it (Free Action to detach and 1 Action to throw), but if you have a returning rune or some way to quickly get back the shield, it doesn't automatically reattach to your arm after the throw.

Thanks for the detailed response! I was unaware of throwing shield adjustment and considering that, detach and throw as a single action is reasonable. Reattachment for an action is what I expected. Though it would be nice if in the PC2 remaster there is a feat that combines attaching and raising a shield for a single action.

Yeah. The integrated d6 -S trait which allows you to etch runes directly on it. The shield thrown trait allows you to attach a shield boss or spikes which can be etched with runes.

1 and 3: There's no real rule separating flavor from mechanics in PF2 so talk with your GM but I consider that these throwable shields have special straps thats doesn't requires extra actions.

2: There's no rule saying that you require a free hand to detach so you can use your own shield hand to do this. If you want you don't really need to use your teeth just say that the strap is tied in a way that you can release it just pulling it with you shield hand.

4. IMO yes that's how it works.
