Custom Scaling Melee Weapons

General Discussion

In Starfinder Enhanced, custom scaling weapons were introduced.

Under the weapon perks special property it does not include the reach property for melee weapons.

Are you able to design custom scaling melee weapons with reach ?

If so, how many build points does it cost ?

No, that's not one of the included options for those rules. There are a lot of common or popular weapon traits that aren't included in the custom weapon design rules. Possibly for balance reasons, space constraints, or both.

I can't imagine that you can't build a reach weapon.

Is it possible for someone on the design team to state if reach was purposely left out or is it an oversight ?

You can extend the range of a ranged weapon by spending BP so why not add reach to a melee weapon ?

You can't use custom scaling to add reach to a melee weapon. However, you can use custom scaling with a base weapon that already has reach (but you can't improve the baseline reach of the weapon, either).

Or because they didn't want players adding reach to a weapon as it progresses (not having reach at low levels, but gaining it later in the game).

Technically speaking, you can't: The scaling equipment rules only apply to equipment created with these rules.

Oh, right. I use the scaling equipment rules as a guide to upgrade existing equipment in a more granular fashion than the versions in the various rulebooks, rather than creating from scratch.

Like an intermediate needler rifle in between the advanced (level 5) and elite (level 10) versions.

There are reach weapons at low levels (taclash level 1, tactical pike level 2).

There are also lots of reach weapons that a player can buy (or drop) later in the game so I'm not sure if and why Paizo would have left it out for balance reasons.

I think there is also a fairness issue. Everyone in the game can now design custom scaling weapons except for people who designed their character builds around reach weapons.

I'm just hoping that someone from the Starfinder design team will read this thread and comment.
