Sarcasm is easy to convey online , as is Snark. It's only hard to understand or see if it's someone that disagrees with certain points you may have.
At least that's par for these forums.

You can't hear tone in internet and sarcasm is almost only conveyed with tone. It doesn't help that internet has lot of jerks that say absolutely ridiculous things and mean it. Other forum I've seen has practice of always marking it when you are being sarcastic.

Basically sarcasm is "easy" to tell in Internet in only one way: If poster is consistently a jerk and the sentence would be more jerk like if poster is being sarcastic. If reading sentence as being completely serious would be more jerk like option, then you don't read post as being sarcastic.

In other words, without tone people will misread other people all the time whether because they are in bad mood and assume worst of strangers in Internet or because they have learned to assume person is a jerk :p

I've seen a disturbing trend lately for *gasp*, *swoon* 'Woe is me, for my freedom to speak sarcastically has been curtailed and this is not inclusive!'.

I've been in conservative cesspits, where bringing up the same 'both sides' of an argument would at best get one shut down, worst banned.

I want to believe in good things, that at the end of the day we can all get along -- and then someone squeezes out a steaming post that reminds me that some folks just want to see the world burn.

And if not the world, then 'just' those 'misguided' people who are trans/gay/different skin tone/ethnicity/etc. Nausea at this mindset indicated.

Then there is a flip back and blame the victim of their attack and pull the whole "See, I'M being reasonable, you're all being jerks!" Further nausea indicated

And when folks do that, after sidling up sideways, pretending to be all reasonable-like while shanking someone metaphorically in the gut -- or at least, the perception thereof -- there is again whining and complaining about poor treatment when they get called on that behavior.

Targeted folks are sensitive to this, because it's been going on for a long time, but it's always been veiled behind play-pretend-civility.

Now, unfortunately, for some there is a misguided perception that 'the cat is away, so the mice can play'.

Not sure how the moderators can reconcile this, but thanks for making an effort at it.

So if anyone's been wondering why I haven't been on the forums much in months... the stuff coming up in this thread is an excellent example of why. So long as bigotry and hate are permitted to flourish, whether blatantly and openly or in the guise of "just asking questions" and "devil's advocate", this place is simply unwelcoming to marginalized people and those who have empathy for them.

To those who fit that qualification and remain, I applaud your strength and wish you the very best of luck. I might peek in when I have the energy, but... I don't have a lot to say these days.

Big hugs to you. Hopefully the new policy will see this improve significantly.
