Flaming Sphere spell

Rules Discussion

Hello guys! In my group we have a wizard with the Flaming Sphere spell. I have two questions about it:

- 1. Is the area of 5 feet radius or diameter? That is, would it affect only a 5-foot square or a 10-foot square?

- 2. When you sustained the sphere and make it roll during your turn, if it rolls over several squares where there are foe, do they all have to make the reflex roll?

I left here the description of the spell.

Flaming Sphere - Spell 2
Evocation / Fire
Source Core Rulebook pg. 338 2.0
Traditions arcane, primal
Bloodline diabolic
Deities Nurgal, Ra, The Path of the Heavens
Cast Two Actions somatic, verbal
Range 30 feet; Area 1 5-foot square
Saving Throw Reflex; Duration sustained up to 1 minute

You create a sphere of flame in a square within range. The sphere must be supported by a solid surface, such as a stone floor. The sphere deals 3d6 fire damage to each creature in the square where it first appears; each creature must attempt a basic Reflex save. On subsequent rounds, the first time you Sustain this Spell each round, you can leave the sphere in its square or roll it to another square within range. It deals 3d6 fire damage (basic Reflex save) to each creature in that square.

Creatures that succeed at their save take no damage (instead of half).

Thx all!

Area is just listed as 5-foot square, so it's just the one square.

It also says "in that square" for when you move it around. It only seems to do damage when it stops moving.

Squiggit is correct. Also, flagged for being in wrong forum.

Moved thread. Thanks for the heads up.

For comparison, there is Aqueous Orb. It is a similar spell, but your questions actually have the opposite answers.

Relevant (but not all) rules text.

Aqueous Orb wrote:

A sphere of water 10 feet in diameter forms in an unoccupied space in range, either on the ground or on the surface of a liquid. When you Cast the Spell and each time you Sustain the Spell, you can roll the orb, moving it up to 10 feet along the ground or the surface of a liquid.

The orb can also collect creatures it moves through. Any Large or smaller creature whose space the orb tries to move through can attempt a Reflex save against your spell DC to avoid being engulfed.

So Aqueous Orb does take up 4 squares in a 10 ft by 10 ft area.

And when you move it, you pick a (rather short) path and it affects all creatures that are on that path.
