Rods, Cast Defensively, & Cleric Domains (or other SLA)

Rules Questions

Can I use a Rod of Reach with the Cleric domain abilities if the ability is labelled as Sp for Spell-like? Can the Cast Defensively option be used with the Cleric domain abilities if the ability is labelled as Sp for Spell-like?

My assumption is yes to both, since the detriment to the ability being Spell-Like is that it otherwise provokes.

My understanding is that metamagic rods only work with actual spells, not with SLA's.

There's an FAQ explicitly for the first question.

For the second question, yes. The SLA rules don't give a seperate rule for provoking, so the rule for spells are to be followed in that regard, and that includs ther option to cast defensively.

Thanks to you both, Gilfalas and Derklord.

There are metamagic feats for Spell-Like Abilities, for example Reach Spell-Like Ability. However, it is costly, since each such feat only applies to a single SLA of your choice and has a limited number of uses.

If you're a Half-Elf you can cast Paragon Surge to get such a feat for whenever you need it.
