Falcata And Crane Style

Rules Questions

2 people marked this as FAQ candidate.

Can you attack wielding a Falcata(or any one handed weapon) with two hands and then using a free action convert your grip to one handed and enjoy the perks of Crane Style?? I would have assumed yes previously but with the new ruling on Two-Handed weapons and Armour Spikes am not so sure.

Scarab Sages

I would guess that this falls into the same boat as their recent Two-Weapon Fighting / Two Handed Weapon Fighting FAQ stating that you cannot use the Two Handed Weapon Style and then free up your off-hand for use with additional attacks. RAW, currently I think your combination is still allowed, but the FAQ's on similar subjects would indicate that it is definitely not RAI. I FAQ'd it for you though :)
Considering their ruling allowing a wizard to cast a spell and then re-grip his staff to threaten at the end of his turn, this might fall into the same boat.

I think Ssalarn is right that this will fall under the new rules revision, but this is one of the paths that hasn't been chased all the way down yet, so for right now it's probably ok.

They haven't declared whether a free hand actually requires the Primary or Off Hand to be free.

Personally, I think that you would be fine. They have stated that you can use a shield in your hand and still two weapon fight with a one handed sword and armor spikes. Obviously you wouldn't be able to use the style while you are attacking (if an opponent had held an action to attack when you two hand the sword for instance), but you should be fine otherwise.

Yes. It's been ruled that letting go of a weapon or gripping it is a free action. You can definitely let go of your weapon at the end of your turn, which will let you use crane wing. The downside is that if you get an Attack of Opportunity, you won't get 1.5x str, only 1x, and if you used power attack, the bonus from that will also be reduced.

Do not forget that it takes a swift action to activate a combat style feat.

Fortunately once it is up, it does not de-activate.

Curing one bit of stupidity with another. Better than nothing.

Also, Paladin is completely right. Switching grip is a free action, so you can't do it out of turn, so it works, you just have weaker AoOs, basically.

Paladin and Stream have it right, IMO.
