Hello Pathfinders!

I have been itching to start up a new game recently. I decided to give Pathfinder 2 a shot. I know I have a lot to learn about the new system, but it excites me and I am ready to learn. One of the best places is here on a Play By Post Game. So if anyone is willing to learn along with me read on!

Pathfinder 2 - Age of Ashes AP!

The Specifics:

We will be starting at level one, and doing Milestone Leveling.

Races: All Paizo Pf2 Races are up for grabs.

Classes: All Paizo Pf2 Classes are up for grabs.

Backgrounds: I would like you to pick one from the Players guide for the AP. If you want to go with another one, please explain how you connect in with the story. More details in the Champaign Info Spoiler tag.

Alignment: I would prefer a Good Aligned Character. I mostly just want everyone to be willing to work on the common goal. I am up for other alignments, but the deepest motivation should be working together.

All other main factors are taken into account by the system. But let me know if you have any questions!

What you should know:

I going to push for at least a post every day. I am hoping you can follow suit. If you are going to be gone for any length of time please let me know so I can bot you.

That being said, I have my moments and occasionally take a few days to post. I am going to blame my toddler and weird work schedule. I will always let you know if something comes up for more than a few days. I am in this for the long haul.

I will likely be using roll20 for maps, though I might be moving to google sheets.

Roleplay is going to be more of a priority than combat, but I want to try to make combat follow the rules as much as possible.
My deciding factor on picking characters will be mostly made on characters with personality. I also prefer characters with flaws that are not mix-maxed like crazy. I want everyone to be functional, but also have their own limitations.
No need to over build a backstory, just something that gives you a reason to be there, and a bit of personality.

Campaign Info:

This game has a very nice Players Guide. I hope all players will read through it, using it to help decide their characters and build.

That being said, the current TL;DR version of the Players guide:
Your character should be in the town of Breachill. Either as a citizen or visitors. There will be a decent amount of traveling, but be ready to make Breachill your own.

Everything else we will build up together!

I am going to keep the recruitment thread open till June 26th. Gives everyone a bit over a week to get everything in. Also gives me a bit of a deadline to read the book.

Let me know if you have any questions! Excited to see what people com up with.

Grand Lodge

Interested. Never played PF2.

I'm pretty good at posting rates.

Draconic background barbarian is my intended build.

Interested. Like you, I've never played PF2 but been keen to try.

Vigilant Seal

Have a character here...Paladin of Iomedae.

Dotting for interest.

I'd love to get in on Age of Ashes, but as I can't deliver more than 3–4 posts a week at the absolute most I'm not sure how suited I am to this particular game.

tentative dot.

Not sure if I'll be able to get into PF2 sufficiently to build a character I feel comfortable playing in time for the deadline.

I'll bite...had a taste of 2nd Ed with a quick one off a while back...will consult the tomes

A few thoughts.

I am ok with 3-4 posts a week. My games usually have a consistent flow, but not every single day. I just strive for 1/day. But I usually post more as a GM than players would anyway.

I am happy to walk through character creation with people. If people want to come up with character ideas, and backgrounds, we can work on crunch together later. This is learning for all, after all.

If I feel like there is a lack of submittioms I will extend deadline as well.

I am most interested in the players, with good commmunicstion and party banter than I am getting all the crunch filled out. I am going to look for good character development, inter party chat, and longer term commitment as my main factors. Some of which I won’t know till we start.

As people post character ideas I will add them to a list (next post)

Also, this is not going to be for PFS credit. Just in case people needed that

Vigilant Seal

hmmm knowing that (about PFS credit) Ill submit a different character. How about a dwarven cleric? or maybe a dwarven rogue

Hello DM Nex (well played btw)

I have been anxiously awaiting a PF2 game here by PbP. I would be interested in applying.
I am knowledgeable and experienced with PF2 (actually prefer it).
I am willing to educate any that need the assistance.
I am also experienced with PbP. You are welcome to view any of my games for my posting rates and style(s).

I shall ponder my concept for AoA.

Thank you for running!

I'm thinking about a lizardfolk bard. The closest thing to a support character I've played in 2E so far is a wizard, and a throat-singing reptile-man roaming the world seems like a pretty neat concept.

Jardeth of Almas wrote:

Both of those sound great!

@Dorian - Good to have experience. I have been running a Plaguestone game in person with my wife and friends. I have done my reading, but things will still come up. Lots of little things to learn. From what I have seen I definitely prefer it. Especially from a GMing side, though player side seems great too.

@TheWorstFighter - Lizardfolk bard sounds awesome.

My Monday Roll20 group just finished with FoPS. We just started EC this week. Absolutely love PF2; both as DM and player.

Super interested! I've been wanting to play a 2e adventure path.

One goblin wizard coming up....

This is Jardeth of Almas...official entry. working on character.

Dwarven Rogue

I am already in a game by DM Nex and also playing in one with him.

Truthfully, I've been having a hard time getting into Pathfinder 2nd edition, due to multiple constraints.

This would make a good dive into it, and force me to take a strong look at it. Thanks!

I'm thinking a Half-Orc Monk or a Half-Orc Druid possibly?

Does that work?

Grand Archive

Hi, I have this wizard. I originally created him for this AP, then suited him for a PFS game which has already ended. I would very much like to re-suit him for the AP (his original background was Hellknight scholar, I think that was the name) and submit him. Tomorrow, during the day I will update his character sheet.

He is one of those elves who are arrogant and think all the other races are somewhat lacking. But he always looks out for them, as he feels it is his responsibility to do so.

Thank you for this game, DM Nex.

I still need to work on her story and description, but this is Twilik with Freda Fairfield, a half-elf alchemist who specializes in bombs!

I'm going to throw this guy in there: Joran

I was in an Ashes game originally with this guy and it lasted about a month. Maybe two.

Anyway, I don't know the system that well myself but I'm willing to give it a shot and learn. Because it appears to be pretty fun but it's tough to make that kind of call without really knowing how it plays out in game.

Thinking 1/2 Orc Fighter. I will research him out this week; but I am thinking going Druid Dedication also.

I am interested. I am experienced with Pathfinder, but new to PbP and only have a tiny amount of experience with 2E. I am most interested in playing Sindarin (ranger), but would be open to a rogue or bard as well if that's better to balance party make up. I'm very interested in RP and have a pretty well-developed character sketch for Sindarin. He is built, but I don't have a profile here for him yet, so I will get that up within the next couple of days.

I am generally able to post every day, though I may miss a day here and there. I intend to have him keep a journal. Some I may keep private, but I'll probably include some of his journal entries in the posts.

I'll post again once his profile is updated.

Here's TheWorstFighter's lizardfolk bard! Some of the mechanical elements like spells and skills are subject to change, but concept-wise everything should be there.

Grand Lodge

Barbarian about 75% complete- what is missing is history, god, personality, goals as well as coherent format BUT I think it is okay to be reviewed for accuracy etc.

He thinks he is descended from a dragon.

He used his general feat to get Orcish feriocity, which I'd like to reskin as draconic ferocity - it's his mindset. If you can get It from "bonded through a deep friendship or romance", I am pretty sure it can also be attained being 110% committed to an ideal or conviction... but let me know if it's a problem.

Question- what feat or class feature takes a trained skill to expert? I want to improve my intimidation skill.

@Salazar EVERY Class (except Rogue) the Skill increases are at odd levels starting at 3rd.
You can increase 1 Skill to Expert at 3rd and 5th.
Then at 7th you may begin increasing any from Expert to Master (or a 3rd Skill from Trained to Expert).
Then at 15th any from Master to Legendary.

Skills do increase every level; because your level+ability modifier+proficiency bonus (Trained+2, Expert+4, Master+6, Legendary+8) is your total.

Grand Lodge

Cool... I want to be boosting Intimidation and Athletics for sure. Thanks to Human Diplomacy will automatically go to Master at 5th

@Helaman I am assuming that you are referring to

Skilled Heritage :
PFS Standard Skilled Heritage
Source Core Rulebook pg. 56
Your ingenuity allows you to train in a wide variety of skills. You become trained in one skill of your choice. At 5th level, you become an expert in the chosen skill.

This is a Heritage Feat. If you stay Human, then yes, you may take this; but, if you take 1/2 Orc Heritage Feat then you may not.
Also, this only auto-increases 1 Skill to Expert at 5th.
Still a really nice Feat; I have it on my Human Cleric in another game.

Morinn's close to being done. if you want to look him over

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@He'sDeadJim - Both Monk and Druid would fit well!

@Inathel Gunuthelan - Yeah elf wizard always fits :)

@Sindarin Elessar - Hey! I am always down for people taking notes. Something that lacks at my in person table sometimes

@Salazar Drachenerbe - I am all for flavoring things slightly differently. As long as it does not change the mechanics at all. So go for it. Looks like Dorian answered your skill question

@Morinn - Looks like it is mostly good. But your ability scores are not correct. You are missing tons of points. 2 Background boosts (DEX/WIS then a free), 1 ancestry (CON+WIS is already included, then +1 boost free). Then 4 more boosts! Try using this Stat Calculator

@Everyone - Unless it breaks your character concept, please use one of the backgrounds from the Players Guide for the AP.

Don't think I have missed anyone. Some really run ideas so far. Again, we can iron out the crunch later. Just looking for dedicated players and a well rounded group.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Current Submissions
Morinn "Alskazi Du'Durazi" - Dwarf Rogue
Freda Fairfield - Half-elf Alchemist
Joran Bravestone - Human Barbarian
Hratarsh Two-Throats - Lizardfolk Bard
Salazar Drachenerbe - Human Barbarian

Pending Submissions
Dorian Grey - Half Orc fighter (with druid dedication maybe)
Sindarin Elessar - Ranger
Inathel Gunuthelan - Elf Wizard

I would be interested in this, however I must disclose that I am currently GMing this AP - up to the start of Book 2 essentially.

If you are OK with that, I would probably look to play a caster, perhaps a Cleric.

Edit: I have a made a Goblin Cleric of Deshaun - Gubrezal, with the Haunting Visions background. He is of the Bumblebrasher tribe, and the idea would be that he has been away, learning to become a cleric, however his visions have bade him return to ensure his home is safe.

ok fixed him. I hope my choosing scout as a background doesnt 'put him to the back' I looked over the backgrounds and none seemed to fit the concept I had in my minds eye..

If you are able and willing to not metagame, I don't mind if you submit.

@Morinn - Na. While I prefer them. As long as you have a reason to be in town, similar to the backgrounds then wont be any lower on my list than any others. I just want people to try for one of those first. Just write up a brief backstory (everyone really should), of why you are here etc. Nothing super deep, as APs are hard slide backstories into. Your backstory should fit your background chosen. Not just picking it for its mechanical properties.

wrote his backstory. a couple hooks for you there DM.

Freda's story is finished and I cleaned up the crunch a bit to help make the numbers clearer.

Grand Archive

Ok, Inathel's ready. If there's something wrong with the sheet, please let me know. I'm not very experienced with 2e.

Cheers!

Sindarin's character stats are done! Please let me know if there are any issues. I, too, am still getting used to 2E.

I don't have his background updated yet. I originally made him for D & D, so I need to update the details. But, he's basically a wandering ranger that tries to help people in need. There is much more complexity to him than that which I will try to convey when I update his background. I should have that up tomorrow. I am interested in having him affiliated with the Firebrands if that's allowed, but given his inexperience that might be something that comes later. That group would certainly fit him very well.

Thank you for running this, DM Nex!

I am leaning towards a dwarf rogue (thief) or an elf sorcerer. I should have it completed by this weekend.

Still a really nice Feat; I have it on my Human Cleric in another game.

Humans also get a general feat at level 1. Adopted ancestry allows me to take another racial feat.

I am taking a half orc racial feat, reskinning it to Draconic Determination and reskinning the 'romance or bond' to a enormously stubborn And proud mindset.

I'll be complete tomorrow

By taking the Half Orc Heritage, you lose out on the Human Versitile Heritage. The Versatile Heritage is what gives you an extra general feat.

So unless you are full human (who took Versitile Heritage) you don't get a General Feat at level 1.

So Dorian Grey is right.

Grand Lodge

I'm new to the system... I found my disconnect.

I get ONE not both. Either skilled heritage OR versatile heritage.

I thought they got both. A throw back to earlier editions where they got skill and feat.

Got it.

I'll lose the skilled heritage (for now). I can always buy it later.

I'll take versatile heritage, use the general feat to buy Adopted ancestry, and thence Orcish Ferocity.

I'll fix it all up by tomorrow

I am very interested in playing Age of Ashes, so this recruitment got me extremely excited.

While I don't have a lot of experience with 2nd edition, I'm a seasoned (role)player in 1st edition, D&D 5E and a few other systems. I enjoy roleplaying, playing flawed characters, creative solutions to (combat) encounters and inter-party relationship-building.

Izgay is a goblin rogue with the "Reputation Seeker" background from the AP.

Grand Lodge

I am surprised and gratified to find the Kellid are a regional culture...

Isgeri: The predominant Kellid ethnic group of southern Avistan before the coming of the Azlanti successor states. The Isgeri were largely absorbed by the Taldans and Chelaxians of Druma and Isger, but still hold onto their traditional cultural practices.

Working it now...

Helaman wrote:

Yeah I think if you stayed Human, your math works out. Though I don't think there is anyway to get back Skilled Heritage later. Those are chosen at 1st level and can't be purchased. They are who you are, not something you can develop later. Just heads up.

@Everyone - We can look over the crunch later. I am sure we will all find little things.

@Sindarin - Firebrands might be tricky to work with. I assume you would want to take the dedication? I am not sure how much the Firebrands get into the AP, if at all. We would have to see how it plays out.

@Izgay - Character looks good. Just want to verify the name is not meant to be pointing out any sort of joke on orientation. I am fine it just being a name, but I don't want it to be a joke that is played out in game.

A child in the more rugged parts of Isger, where many of the Kellid ways have not gone extinct... Not entirely. His people still hew to their Warrior-Hunter heritage, and the villages in his area often fall into careers as caravan guards, mercenaries or, occasionally, highwaymen preying on the merchants often passing through the land...

Salazar was born with golden hair and blazing blue eyes - a rarity amongst the Kellid. The village oracle recalled legends of descendants of a great golden dragon who took human form and dwelt among them. These descendants used to be more common but over the centuries are now only seen a once in a generation or so.

While young, only 18 summers, Salazar is as strong as any of the village warriors. His skill in combat promising for one of his age, though any experienced fighter will also say he has much to learn. His ability to tap into fearsome rages has been notable in a culture that spawns it's fair share of berserkers. He will not accept defeat, he refuses to go down long after others would have fallen.

Having been told all his life he is special, a descendant of dragons, he has developed a haughty pride in his heritage - he is convinced that his draconic blood gives him great power, physically and mentally. He sees this as his time to stride forth now on the world, to prove himself and show forth his greatness. The Call for Heroes is a good place to start.

Ancestral Paragon is available at 3rd... allows a level 1 ancestral feat, again new to the system so if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. I could go skilled heritage at 1st and still use my level 3 general feat to do the Orcish ferocity thing then... representing an awaking of his draconic blood. Have a think and let me know if it's a) rule kosher and b) something you are okay with in your game. I feel like I might be pushing myself out of selection at this rate

@DM Nex - I can change the name if it's an issue. It's a variation of "izgoy" (rogue, scoundrel in Russian), changed to sound more feminine. The 'a' is pronounced like in 'spa'. But I can see how it can be open for other interpretations, so I will change it.

Grand Lodge

Personal notes... pay no mind... thinking something thru.

161014101612.FM.H.WP.
H: VH. Gen.-HvyA. Anc: NA - WP- DI

If you are okay with it? I'd like to change my submission to that of a Field Medic Cleric. I can knock him out shortly.

@Salazar Drachenerbe - Sorry for the back and forth. I just want to understand how you are getting everything you have.

You picked Human. Then your 1 heritage is Versatile Heritage. which means you don't get Skilled Heritage too.

With Versatile Heritage you are able to get the General Feat Adopted Ancestry. Now digging a bit deeper, here is the problem. Half-Orc is not an Acnestry, it is a Heritage. That might change when Orc is a full Ancestry. So unless you go full Half-Orc you are not able to get Orc Ferocity. I know you are trying to reflavor it, but I am not sure how the reflavor makes sense. You are not raised by dragons. So I would like you to rethink some of those choices.

Also Adopted Ancestry gives you access to those Ancestry's feats. It does not give you a free one. So you would only be getting 1 at 1st level.

@Everyone - My 2 cents is I am really looking for a simpler group of people. I want the characters to be easy to RP with, nothing overly complicated. It's hard to quantify, but please shoot for more less "difficult" characters. Not that builds are difficult, but how the character talks and acts.

Grand Lodge

Yeah. Changing to a basic (read: not complicated) cleric.

There is no issue, just making sure you were not going for something semi offensive. I am all for the play on Russian (my wife speaks Russian around the house for fun all the time). I will leave it up to you to change.. No worries either way. Its a good name otherwise. So pick what you want.

Thanks for understanding though. It sounds like that was not the intent, which is what matters :)
