Is an intelligent item a creature for dimension door restrictions?

Intelligent items are significantly more independent than they were in older editions. The language to describe them has changed to “the item may, if it wants to...” leaving no doubt that they make their own decisions about when to activate.

As a default, intelligent items have control over all their own magic, meaning an intelligent magic weapon could deny the effects of its fundamental and property runes if it so chose, and intelligent items perform their own activations when they wish. Intelligent items can typically use 3 actions per turn, acting on their partner’s turn. These actions don’t count toward their partner’s 3 actions. They have a reaction if any of their activations requires one.

Are you asking if you can or can't bring an intelligent item with you?

My answer would be: this is sufficiently ambiguous to qualify for Rule 0.

That is, I would personally waive that restriction whenever the story warranted it, so that, for example: a hero could bring her items with her, or that an intelligent item that possess this power could dimension door away itself and its wielder.

On the other hand, you are entirely within your rights to rule a hero can't. For example, if a case occurs when that would come across as abusive somehow. But if you do that it would be more appropriate to justify it as just that: abuse; rather than narrow ruleslawyering I mean.

You see, that's the old attitude from before item sufferage. Today the question may also be asked "Can an intelligent item cast dimension door and bring me with it"? :-)

It is an item, not a creature - it mentions that it doesn't have strength, dex or con due to being an inanimate object, so it definitely isn't a creature.

I have to agree with Tender. It is constantly called an item. Its never given any creature type.

As other stated, it's an item that's never called a creature.

Furthermore, being as it's a world of magic, it can seem like a creature, might even contain or be the soul of a creature. Yet it's not making saves vs. AoE, it's equipped, and so forth.
So even at their most creature-iest, intelligent items are items, albeit items with AI functionality & personality.

It is sometimes called a creature

Gmg 88: An intelligent item always has an alignment trait, just like any other creature

What if I subject it to an Animate Object Ritual?

Yes, agreed - that's why I asked this exact question :)
