Regarding what specifically effects what; I also noticed this wording on the wall spells, which to my frustration are all separated into their own special little individual spells.
You raise a blazing wall that burns creatures passing through it.
You sculpt a barrier of ice that blocks sight and, once shattered, freezes foes.
You create a barrier of gusting winds that hinders anything moving through it.
You shape a wall of solid stone.
.
Fire effects any creatures
Ice effects any foes
Wind effects any thing
Stone ain't effect nothing
Obviously Game Masters will be able to arbitrate what each wall will do in any given circumstance, but the rules are a bit capricious if you try to follow them directly as written.

Again, this is only if you allow the flavor text to be your guide. All of those spells have large rules blocks that tell you exactly what the mechanics of what they actually do is.
Any creature that crosses the wall or is occupying the wall’s area at the start of its turn takes 4d6 fire damage.
A section destroyed by means other than fire leaves behind a chilling mass of ice that is difficult terrain and deals 2d6 cold damage to any creature
Wall of Wind has too many different effects for me to bother quoting here.
I mean Wall of Stone is a wall. That's all it does...
