One thing to note is that both Animal Companions and Familiars have a dearth of relevant equipment. You can't even give your AC a ring of fire resistance before going to the elemental plane of fire.

A supplement which contains more items with the companion trait could introduce familiar items that help all familiar users. These could be like Path of Exile uniques that modify normal familiar rules. Higher levels could allow more impressive stuff or with fewer tradeoffs.

Examples of lowish level:

Ignore AoE damage, but gain vulnerability to physical damage.

Grant regeneration, but give penalty to stealth and perception

Familiar becomes incorporeal, but senses are dulled.

Examples of highish level:

Familiar pilots a simulacrum of themselves

Collar of Recall summons your familiar out of danger as a free action

Guenhwyvar Style Statuette for your familiar to retreat into
