Will these still be a thing that happens in PF2?

Yes.

WILL THERE BE PLAYER'S GUIDES???

Of course.

Hellknight rules won't be in the Age of Ashes player's guide, but we'll have those rules out very soon. Playing a Hellknight in Age of Ashes should be interesting.

As for exactly WHAT is going into the Player's Guide... I can't say yet because I haven't yet written it. I've got more ideas in it than are responsible to include in it, of course. I'll likely aim to keep it pretty simple and short so that...

...A) It doesn't kill an already incredibly busy editorial department here, and...

...B) Doesn't overwhelm players with too many new options, when everyone's gonna still be focusing on the options in the Core rules.

Does it still have campaign specific background options(which replaced campaign traits)? Or were those replaced by something else after playtest was done?
The role previously played by campaign traits will be played by backgrounds, yes. That's the only rules element that I can 100% guarantee will be in the player's guide.

James Jacobs is entirely too soft hearted. It's not hard to replace editors who collapse from exhaustion.

If this is a joke, it is in exceptionally poor taste.

I, for once, agree with Zimmy.

I only saw an empty subforum and just wanted to add the obvious thread for a first post, but this took a surprisingly dark turn.

When is ‘The Players’ Guide’ available?

Unannounced. Generally they try to have it available by street date of the 1st volume of the AP, which is August 1st.

I'm eagerly awaiting the release! to the point of endless refreshing of screens to see if it is time yet.

Going to be my first shot at DMing a path.

Hope you have fun!

It's going to be my first time as well for a full campaign and I am so excited

Yay!

I'm hoping it comes out in the near future as I'm curious as to certain things the first part of the AP touches upon while referring to the Player's Guide for added details. Admittedly one of those also gives an alternative (a 10% generic discount)... but given how much of character generation now depends on the PG, it's increasingly important for the PG to come out before the first part of the AP ships (seeing some folk jump right into these things the moment they get them).

I mean, the old Trait system was important and all, but it wasn't vital to character generation the way backgrounds now are.

Part of me is also quite curious as to what notes are kept for the PGs, so that the AP doesn't reference something in the PG that ended up being forgotten or left out. It strongly looks like the skeleton of the PG is created while the AP itself is being generated, and then once things are finished up for release, the PG gets filled out more and then polished.

As with pretty much all of our Adventure Path Player's Guides, this one will be coming out very close to the release date, as far as I know... which means mid-next week. It's done, in any event, and all through approvals, so the only thing that'd hold it up now is someone forgetting to upload it to the site OR it simply not fitting into a schedule, which wouldn't make sense.

To manage expectations... it's not filled with all sorts of new stuff for players, nor is it a giant free edition preview. And while there are custom backgrounds in it, we're still kind of testing things out so these aren't TOO different than the core rules ones... and you could use the core rules backgroudns too.

Once we're out from under the nuclear explosion of 2nd edition being the Big New Thing, we can start looking at more robust background mechanics for Adventure Paths. Maybe.

IN any event, the Player's Guides are almost always written by the Adventure Path's lead designer, and in my case, I patch them together in the background while working on the first few actual adventures. By the time I finish up a Player's Guide, usually the first 2 to 3 adventures are all done and off to the printer.
