Advice on leveling as a group at Gen Con?

Hey all,

This might have an easy solution, but I'd welcome some insight. At GenCon, myself and five friends are planning to play SFS for three sessions. At the start, I have 5 XP and my friends have 3 XP. The first two sessions are Tier 1-4, the final can be played at tier 1-2 or 3-4.

After one session, I technically level to 3, whereas they will still be 2. For the 1-4 sessions, I can easily play down since the APL will still be in the 2 range.

For the last session (tier 1-2 and tier 3-4), would I no longer be able to play with my friends or could I still play down because the APL would be low enough? If that's the case, could I simply reserve the first two chronicle sheets of the day and apply them after the third session to keep us all together?

Thanks, and sorry if this is obvious. It's been a few years since I've played SFS.

Assuming you are talking about the SFS multi-table special, there is a non-zero chance that you could play at a 1-2 table at level 3. Admittedly that chance, though non-zero, is still quite low. Sadly, you can only hold credit for a chronicle if your character is not high enough level to receive it. (i.e. You play a 5-8 scenario with a pregen and apply it to a character that is only level 3.)

All-in-all your only option to play with your friends at the multi-table is to play a pregen or a new level 1 character.

As an aside that you may have already thought of but I'll say it anyway. You could also get them up to 5xp by GMing two scenarios, or playing with them with another character. There isn't a small time before GenCon. Also, the internet is a medium for gaming if you and/or they are available. Honestly, this seems the best option for you all to play together for all 3 sessions.

If you need a GM for your crew to play those two scenarios or need some pointers on how to GM online games, hit me up. I've run a couple online games, it's pretty easy.

Thank you for all of this, from the advice stated to the offer for additional pointers for online play.

It all makes perfect sense. I'm the party DM on the whole anyway so I could always run a few sessions, I think your suggestion of running with a pre-gen might be the way to to.

It might just make sense for me to come with my level 3 in hand and ask if I could play it, and if the answer is no I can just roll with a pregen instead. Thanks again!
