This suggestion is only if Summoner isn't going to be a thing. It would give them a definite uniqueness to one or the other.
As the subject, perhaps introduce a Familiar Master class skill/feat that lets them have an extra familiar or give their current familiar a +1 size category. Something of that sort. Even letting the player pick a familiar from the Summon Monster I and up spells depending on level. Then, include a "Familial Sorcerer/Wizard" (or similarly named) class feat path that just adds more master or familiar abilities like special reactions and such, like spending a spell slot to increase the familiar's damage die by one step for a number of strikes equal to the spell slot expended. Just improving upon familiars overall.
