Hey Folks,
I am hopeful that some can clear up a little confusion. I have been looking over the Special Weapon Proficiency Feat and wonder what the benefit would look like for a Mechanic.
The Mechanic gets Basic Melee Weapon Proficiency, Grenades and Small Arms. By taking this feat, would I be able to a single weapon above what I am proficient in and not have the -4 penalty? Or am I just overtired and not getting the intent of the feat.
As always, thank you in advance for your help with this.

Kinda, but not really I guess ? Not sure I get the question 100%.
It's basically just SF's version of Exotic Weapon Proficiency.
You get proficiency with one weapon of the "special" category.
Right now, that's mostly the lv 1 or 2 bow, shuriken and net. Not great.
Plus the archaic bows from the AP. And we'll see what Armory brings, if anything.
The one difference being that it's not necessarily just one weapon : as the feat itself says "If a set of special weapons are all different models of the same weapon, proficiency in one such weapon grants proficiency with all weapons in the set" - the one example we have so far being the kish battlebows.
Which is good because this is NOT a system in which you'd ever be happy with proficiency in a single weapon.
If however you want a longarm, advanced melee weapon, sniper rifle or whatever, simply get that feat instead.
And Versatile Specialization at some point, probably.
