Work today, trying to survive the heat wave that has plagued us the last couple of weeks. Norway wasn't made for temperatures much above 20 C.

We have moved! Mostly settled in at the new apartment, though more orientation and move-related stuff to do on Monday and beyond. For the weekend though, we're pretty set and can just relax.

Thanks. Tl;dr, I just wasn't having fun. And I can not have fun for a while, but after a year with no improvement, it's time to move on.

Both my kids came back from their respective sleepaway camps on Friday, and my wife also came back from her out of town work trip. So, I went from quiet evenings at home to one day of chaotic logistics, and today it's all about unpacking, laundry, and stocking the fridge.

Managed to harvest a very substantial quantity of blackberries today, despite the presence of several Advanced Dire Brambles, which, while they put up a gallant fight, were no match for my kukri and sickle combo in the end.

Well. I thought that you also, were stalking your refrigerator. (Perception is usually low for those sorts of appliances.)

The young Waterhammer once crashed his ten-speed into a mass of blackberry brambles. Skewered his thumb knuckle on a thorn, pretty good.

What now? Hoom... hoom...

The blackberries here have already peaked and only the bushes remain. Growing up on a farm as a kid, we had a hilltop pasture that had nearly an acre of wild blackberries. We'd have an all day sort of berry picking and then my mom would can homemade blackberry jam.

...*sniff*... No, I'm not homesick or nuthin'...

Howdy!

No game for me this weekend, but work on my upcoming campaign continues. A friend invited me to play in his new campaign (he'll be playing in mine) and their first game is the 16th but I have plans for that night already with my brother and a friend from college. But my tentative launch date is August 30th, so we'll see how it goes!

What about all youse other scallawags?

OH! I almost forgot. Yesterday I got spend some time with one of my dearest friends over Guinness and pizza. We hadn't seen one another since 1983. Nothing like good times with a good friend to fortify one's soul.

Summerslam is this weekend and it's both days. I'm not sure I want to spend that much time watching wrestling.

Also we have Strange Aeons, so there's a lot of juggling to do.

Well, with all those tentacles, juggling should be trivial...

I had a boardgame night with a couple friends last night. We played a game called Too Many Bones, and it was a lot of fun. I'm not a boardgame hobbyist like my friend is; I do enjoy them, but I go to his boardgame nights to catch up with him and other friends, first, and dig into a game's strategy second. This game, while complex, was pretty fun. We played far too late into the night, but it didn't feel like it.

On Sunday we are stopping by a going away party for some friends moving out of town, and this week, my kids are with my mom and sister for the last week of summer before school starts.

TOZ, how is your Strange Aeons game going? How big is your party? What classes? Is the AP challenging with your party?

Man, I haven't actually done a full write up of our game yet. May as well knock that out.

Strange Aeons tangent:
We are currently at 9th level around the start of book 4. Cassomir is an old friend to me, but not to the party.

I'm running a half-orc telekineticist with secondary focus in air, powered by the Duke of Thunder Ranginori. My brother has a drow magus with a construct arm, not too clear on the mechanics, but the arm is an intelligent item. Cyz is running an elven living grimoire inquisitor of Pharasma. Our new player has his first character, a lizardfolk oracle of volcanos, while our veteran gremlin is running a 'halfling' changeling cleric of Zon-Kuthon who thinks ZK is about consensual bondage.

So five characters of varying power levels, but it is hard to call difficulty given a lot of Dreamlands shenanigans. The early game we were cautious about finding our way through the asylum and the town we escaped to. The river ride has been fairly easy for the most part thanks to us being in that sweet level range 5-8, while visiting the Dreamlands let the difficulty ramp up thanks to us being mostly fine if we 'died' and got ejected. I've heard things about the latter books that will make things interesting to deal with, but I think we have enough raw damage to manage it, depending on dice. Big kineticist blasts do wonders and punch magus fills in well when that doesn't work.

Good choice! No pizza for me today, but I do have a bottle of Guinness Foreign Extra in front of me, flaunting its curves and winking saucily.

I also have a sparring day tomorrow, so had better not drink too many of those.

It's really wild when we're in the Dreamlands and the party can hear him talking.

I loved Strange Aeons. By far it's the favorite adventure path I've GM'd. So much fun.

Funny enough, we had a boardgame night this past Saturday as well. Played a round of Wyrmspan and a round of Paperback, then grabbed dinner together. Hoping to get a gaming group together here for in-person gaming after years of only playing online - we've had several of Scint's new coworkers express interest, so it's just a matter of getting together and working out the plans.

Will likely not be this week, as all the teachers are out of town the whole week for training and onboarding, but maybe next weekend.

In the ongoing saga of "What Ailment Does Cal Have This Week?" I have H1N1 influenza, also called Flu A or swine flu. It's not been a terrible bad case but enough to just knock me out of being at all useful to the world for a week or so. I think the worst of it's behind me but I still have some stubborn chest congestion and a mild sinus infection. I figure at my current rate I will have had nearly all diseases known by science by the end of the year.

In better news, my new campaign is on track for its debut game on August 31st. I have some small details to hammer out and then building them into a coherent adventure. But I haven't been excited about GMing in a long time and I have high hopes for the game and for myself.

What's everyone else got going on? Oh, and I echo Andostre's sentiment about Orthos finding a gaming group! That's great news!

We're celebrating my sister's birthday tonight at a steakhouse, picking up the kids at that dinner from spending the week with her and our mom, and then preparing the kids for the first day of school. One is on Monday, and one is on Tuesday.

Also, it looks like my in-person Call of Cthulu game is going to pick back up later this month or in September. Classic CoC this time, instead of Delta Green.

In all likelihood, I'll be excavating my lawn in an amateurish attempt to fix a sprinkler system. I had someone come out and give me a quote to repair it and somehow between having a conversation with the tech and getting the PDF estimate the workload doubled and several new items got added, raising the price to "Fine, I'll do it my damn self!"

God I hope I don't wake any Balrogs. That's, like, the last thing the neighborhood needs. Buncha Balrogs running around, passing and shit.

I am not looking forward to when we redo the irrigation system here. But at least we will get rid of useless lines and have some idea how it works compared to what the previous owners put in.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

We inherited this system and the company that does maintenance borders on criminal in their mark-up. I took to winterizing it myself because of what they wanted to charge. For that kind of money, they better throw in some good drugs or gold-plated sprinkler heads or one of those upside-down airplane stamps.

Their mistake is overestimating how much I actually rely on their services and the system they installed. I am perfectly capable of using a hose and sprinkler system old-school till I get around to repairing things. Especially since 80% of the system already works. The only thing they offer is convenience and there's only so much, as an inveterate cheap bastard, that I'm willing to shell out for convenience.

Now if they were roofers I'd be screwed because I've run the numbers and whatever roofers want to charge is lower than the inevitable medical bills and lost time I'll end up with if I try to get on my roof and do any strenuous labor beyond clinging to the shingles and breathing heavily. But this is on and/or under the ground, which is where I'm from.

In other weekend plans, just found out a friend got a new puppy so I'll be going over to squee about that Sunday.

I read 'Buncha Balrogs' as 'Baruch Balrogs'.

Really, why shouldn't Balrogs be named Baruch, and why shouldn't they run about, passing and shit?

Can we get some Baroque Balrogs is here, please?

Look, we're all adults here, right? How about some GALrogs, eh? Amirite?

Hey, kids. I'm on the slow today because of a bunch of medical nonsense where I lost my prescription pain med of over a decade. You know, cut loose without a refill so "Withdrawals? Who cares? We're medical specialists and we're bleeding this town's chronic pain sufferers dry. We're so bloody rich!"

Ahem. Anyway, since I don't have to worry about failing a drug test, now, I'm trying grass candy to see if it helps. It's eased my pain a lot, thank goodness, but aside from feeling light headed the only non-analgesic symptoms have been cravings for pastries and Christmas candy. And blueberry muffin batter.

Tomorrow night some friends and I bought the PPV of the worst, most Jerry Springer and Maury Povich thing you could see, Appalachian rednecks beating the crap outta each other in the ring. It's called Red Neck Brawl TV, and it's as horrible as you might imagine. So we're gonna drink Paul's very expensive booze from the distilleries of Ol' Kintuckeh, eat Ro-Tel Velveeta "cheese" dip and chips along with a LOT of mozzarella sticks (they were ON SALE! Geeze, wouldja...just...ahem)...

S'anyway, everybody have fun this weekend. Everybody wang chung this weekend.

Nothing as exciting installing a new irrigation system, but kudos to quibblemuch for recognizing the risks of amateur roof work. I need my wife to forbid me from climbing up there, otherwise I'd totally do it. Fur sure.

Also nothing as exciting as self-medicating or redneck brawlin', but I do have to do some surprise work for the office this weekend, so at least I have that.

Also, a friend is hosting a poker game this weekend, so I'm going to go lose some money doing that.

TRANSCRIPT SO FAR:

EMPEROR URIEL SEPTIM: Only you, prisoner, stand between humanity and the Fires of Oblivion.

and playing Oblivion: Remastered.

I mainly play Skyrim when I get the chance to play a videogame, because I know how to play it already, and I don't need to re-remember the controls, the story, or whatever goals I had whenever I get the chance to play a game every six weeks or so. I replaced my very old laptop about a year and a half ago, and one of the reasons was so I could finally play Skyrim Special Edition, which my old laptop wasn't advanced enough to play.

I was SO EXCITED when they announced Oblivion Remastered, because I loved the original when I was younger (even more than Skyrim), and I figured it could also fill the same role that Skyrim does for me when I have free time. I went from SO EXCITED to SO DISAPPOINTED when I bought the game, installed it, and then discovered that my new-ish laptop wasn't advanced enough to play Oblivion Remastered.

Anyway, the second week of school has ended for my kids, and my weekend is mostly full of kid events because of it. One of the events, unfortunately, is a funeral for the parent of one my son's classmates. We are going out to dinner with some friends, but we're not sure if that will need to get interrupted because of a school event going on.

Not a lot going on this weekend here. My kid's band is playing in town and I might go see them, but the venue allows smoking and I really don't like being around that much smoke for three hours. I'll probably doing some household stuff and finishing up the inaugural adventure for the new campaign next Saturday.

THOUGHT: The Blades asking me to go to all the Cyrodilic rulers for military aid is like Delta Force asking a random guy in County lock-up to lobby Congress for more military spending. I’m flattered, sure, and I appreciate the help against the mud crabs, but is it really strategically the *best* move?

ALSO: I’m keeping track of the number of times someone says “you’ll probably die but…” when asking me to do something. The number is higher than zero, which is definitely less than ideal, from a motivation perspective.

Playing Oblivion: Remastered as a Hand-to-Hand specialist be like...

Wooo! Have a great start to the new campaign, Cal! Glad to hear you're stepping back behind the screen. Crush the PCs! Drive them before you! Hear the weeping and lamentation of their snacks!
