If you made a pre-order for a physical product from any retailer, you should receive that product.
Note that it won't necessarily be on your doorstep on the "public" release day - a lot depends on how quick shipping is to Amazon's warehouses, then to you. However, unless the entire shipping process goes catastrophically wrong somewhere, there's no realistic chance you'll go without a physical product you preordered.

I wouldn't actually count on Amazon, Lx32. They have cancelled preorders multiple times when they didn't get enough product in. The only way to guarantee you would get the playtest book is to order it directly from Paizo, because they aren't going to printing many more books than their number of preorders.

I'm a little surprised to hear that, Amazon routinely beats my subscription hardbacks by 1-2 weeks, comparing with friend's order (or the times I get confused/convinced a product isn't part of a subscription and order through Amazon).

I've noticed since my Stafinder subscriptions that my orders tend to arrive much sooner than they used to.

Things may well have improved (it’s been a while since I remember a thread about it, now you say that).
There used to be lots of them, berating Paizo for not shipping books to Amazon. If your experience is more recent, I wouldn’t be deterred by my memories from a few years back.

I will vouch for Fuzzypaws on this. I have SEEN this happen via people complaining on forums and even on Amazon itself.
There is NO guarantee with Amazon...the only guarantee you have is that if they don't ship you your order, you are not going to be charged (or if you were, you will receive a full refund).
Still, that price on Amazon...too good to pass up. I have it pre-ordered on Amazon, but it's only based on a hope that I don't get hosed on this.
It's entirely possible Amazon will not order enough, and those who paid later and paid more will get the pre-orders and those who ordered first but less (due to their policy of you paying the lowest price that was ever offered prior to a products release from the time you pre-ordered) overall will NOT get their orders.
I've seen it happen. It stinks. That's life and part of the risk and gamble.
Luckily, if that happens I'll still be able to print out a copy from the Free Offering of the playtest from Paizo, even if I don't get a more sturdy printed copy.

Paizo will be printing the Playtest Rulebook and Adventure to order. Distributors need to place their orders with us in the days leading up to May 1, which is the day we will stop taking preorders at paizo.com, and then we'll communicate the final quantities to the printer.
So in the past couple weeks, distributors should be communicating to retailers that this is a limited print-to-order run, and they should start getting retailer commitments over the next several weeks.
Amazon buys their copies from a book distributor, and that distributor will be placing their preorder during that window. Whatever number we get from them, that's what we'll print and ship to them. If Amazon is going to continue to take preorders after they've given their distributor a number—and I expect they will—then they better be ordering more copies than they have customer orders for, or hope that their distributor is ordering more copies than they have retailer preorders for. Otherwise, they're going to have a hard time filling those orders.

Yeah, that’s a great point.
If amazon were going to screw anything up it would be this. I’m guessing they don’t cope well with “out of the ordinary”.

I am having a problem ordering the book from the paizo website. it says I can order below at the playtest part of the site, yet there is nothing to click on and nothing comes up when I try to search for the playtest core rulebook in the store. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
You aren't doing anything wrong currently. I think it is still being worked on. The basic framework is on but the product page and links to the store and purchasing do not seem to be up yet.
I'd say a little more patience (though it is hard) and they'll get it working...I hope.

Working on it!

Yikes. That's good to know. But with this timely word of warning I'm happy to say I've just preordered my playtest products through the Paizo website. Looking forward to August!

One question, however. When I review the order in my order history, there's a box up top with this text:
Want to change your preorder?
You have until Tue, May 1, 2018, 11:59 pm US/Pacific.
Click here to change your preorder items, shipping details or payment information.
But the "Click here" doesn't include a hyperlink. What if I do want to change my preorder before May 1st? (E.g., to add the map, which I didn't order at first.)

Sigh. That link worked in testing... we'll fix it, though it may be tomorrow. Like Steve said, though, you can just make changes on the Step 1 tab.

I am placing my order for the deluxe hardcover through Paizo directly and on the shipping option tab it says "Amazon Standard Delivery". Does Paizo typically use Amazon fulfillment? I have only ordered once from Paizo and I thought it came directly from them, but maybe I didn't pay close enough attention.

Vic talked about that over here (so yes, it sounds like it's unusual & just for this one event)
Nikosandros wrote:Seems to be working now. What is "Amazon Standard Delivery" as a shipping option? From the FAQ on the preorder page:
FAQ wrote:We are working with Amazon.com for fulfillment because the volume of preorders is going to be very high. As part of this process, Paizo will share pertinent order information with Amazon.com in accordance with our Privacy Policy. Pathfinder Playtest preorders will ship from Amazon.com fulfillment centers in Amazon.com shipping boxes, but these orders will not appear in your Amazon.com order history. Paizo is providing customer service for all preorders—do not contact Amazon.com, as they will be unable to assist you.

Wait so the amazon pre-order is a gamble? Damn, I had no idea. Really rethinking my pre-order decision now.
What Vic was talking about was books that are ordered on Amazon's shop site, where it might be possible that they'll still accept orders after the cutoff date.
If you order from Paizo, Amazon is only involved as the shipping agent, and there should be no "gamble".
