Paired Opportunists and AoO / round limit

Rules Questions

Good afternoon all,

I have a question about Paired Opportunists that I wasn't able to find an answer to with my Google-fu.

I have a player who is wondering if the provision that

Paired Opportunists wrote:
Enemies that provoke attacks of opportunity from your ally also provoke attacks of opportunity from you so long as you threaten them (even if the situation or an ability would normally deny you the attack of opportunity).

allows a character to exceed their normal limit on attacks of opportunity per round. I had initially taken this to mean a number things (such as allowing you to take an AoO while taking total defense), but I have to admit that the question of whether it allows you to exceed your AoO limit (provided you meet the other conditions) has me stumped.

My knee-jerk reaction is to say that it wouldn't, but the more I read the text, the less certain I am with my initial reaction.

Thanks, Rules Forums!

That text is an extension of the sentence - it is specifically related to the provoking of an attack of opportunity. It has absolutely nothing to do with your ability or otherwise to make that attack of opportunity.

I've always understood the bold text to indicate that the situation (the target has cover, etc.) or the target's abilities (Spring Attack, etc.) would not prevent Paired Opportunists from letting you get an AoO if your ally does. Since it does not explicitly say that it provides the ability to make more attacks of opportunity per turn (as Combat Reflexes), your player's interpretation seems like quite a stretch.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

There are plenty of times when an enemy provokes attacks of opportunity but you're unable to take them.

Let's say you only have one AoO per turn.

One enemy moves through your threatened space, provoking an AoO.

Another enemy tries to fire a bow within your threatened space, provoking an AoO.

A third enemy tries to trip you, but doesn't have the Improved Trip feat, so provokes an AoO.

In this case, all 3 enemies have provoked AoO's, but you can't attack them all because you only have one AoO per turn.

In the case of Paired opportunist, it says "Provokes" regardless of whether you're able to take it. Paired Opportunist doesn't say "Allows an AoO" regardless of whether you're able to take it.

Thanks for the clarification, all!

MrCharisma nailed the language I was missing.
