A question on item creation and progression

General Discussion

My reason for asking: So I have created a character in star finder and became fond of the needle pistol but I have found that it seams to lack the progression of the other weapons (this appears true for the other injection type weapons.) I understand that poisons and medical items can help mitigate this but the cost of medicine and poisons is staggering.

My question: How would you go about crafting or creating a higher item level version of an existing item for the purpose of increasing its base damage and increasing its item effect dc values. I just wish I could just spend a set amount of credits to improve an item I have. Like spending to master craft an item in other systems.

Personally? I'd find a comparable weapon of the same level that does progress, and base it around that. So, like so:

The base Needler Pistol is Level 1, 1d4 P, 30 ft range, and holds 6 ammo, for 105 credits.

The Tactical Semi-Auto Pistol is also Level 1, has damage 1 step up, same range, holds 50% more ammo, and costs 260 credits. So a further advanced Needler Pistol would do 1 damage step less than the appropriate Semi-Auto Pistol, hold 2/3 as many rounds, and cost approximately 40% as much by these numbers. So let's carry this out.

Advanced Needler Pistol - Level 7, 2200 cr, 2d4 P, 60 ft, Injection DC +2, 8 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

Elite Needler Pistol - Level 10, 7280 cr, 3d4 P, 60 ft, Injection DC +2, 8 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

Paragon Needler Pistol - Level 13, 18080 cr, 4d4 P, 60 ft, Injection DC +2, 11 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

Now here's where we run out of Semi-Auto Pistols, but we now have access to the Gyrojet Pistols, which seem to be similar. As such I will be continuing using their stats from here, adjusted accordingly. And as they now use a *far* more expensive ammo than their predecessors I'm gonna triple the effective ammo to calculate new use. As they have also added a crit effect now, I'll increase the effectiveness of the Injection DC. Alas I don't have names I can easily crib from so yeah.

[Improved 1] Needler Pistol - Level 15, 36600 cr, 3d10 P, 80 ft, Injection DC +4, 16 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

[Improved 2] Needler Pistol - Level 17, 85080 cr, 4d10 P, 80 ft, Injection DC +4, 16 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

[Improved 3] Needler Pistol - Level 20, 286320 cr, 5d10 P, 80 ft, Injection DC +4, 16 darts, use 1, Bulk L, Analog, Injection

The Venomous Weapon Fusion lets you make one injection attack per round.

The venomous fusion works once per DAY not per round sadly

Oh, god, I missed that. Ugh. That's REALLY bad.

Well thanks for the feed back. As I level I'll consider the transfer of using similar items. I still wish there was a simpler way. Like spending a 1000 credits to increase the level having to wait till level 6-7 to get an upgrade for my needler seams long also I won't even be able to use a fusion to improve it as it's only lv1. Like trying to use a normal pistol but wanting a higher level fusion for it. Any other ideas?

Currently, the answer is "you can't, there is no rules support". Check back after the Tech Guide or whatever its called comes out.

You might want to check out the Nightarch Needler from the Pact Worlds expansion.
