Mechanic and Overcharge trick

As far as I can tell, a mechanic can use a move action to use Overcharge on an adjacent ally's weapon, then use a standard action to use it on their weapon, and fire it. I see nothing that says you can only use it once a round.

Is that correct?

I think you're right. Looks legit.

You'll be eating through battery power like nuts, though.

I've been playing an exocortex mechanic who's been sticking close to the soldier, who delays his action until my turn is over. That way we both get overcharge damage, and I have a beefy soldier to soak some damage for me. Seems to work better than my drone mechanic... Since the drone misses most of the time. Our group has been diligent about taking any batteries we find.

Looks legal to me. Although you might find full attacking will net more damage later once a d6 gets lost in the ton of dice later weapons dish out.

Except eventually you can add +7d6 to attacks, of you focus on the Overcharge line.

This trick probably works really well with a Soldier who focuses on using AOE weapons like grenades or plasma cannons. Get that extra damage to as many enemies as you can!

Except line, blast, and explode properties can't be used with any ability that increases a single attacks.. so overcharge doesn't work with them

Actually, that language only exists for the line and blast weapons. (Probably because there are no operative-friendly weapons that have the line or blast properties.)

You can totally overcharge explode weapons, like grenades and plasma cannons.

Doesn't work with grenades, since they don't have a battery or power pack.

This is just me, but I think the word 'instead' throws a wrench into the dual overcharging plan.

Maybe. But there is no mention of "once a round" or any specifically exclusionary language. One option is a move action, one option is a standard action.

I usually buff a team mate, but if no one is nearby, the drone will do. Gives me something more to do in combat, and rewards teamwork.

"As a standard action you can ... You can instead use this ability as a move action...". I don't think once per round is necessary. I think the phrasing says you do one or the other.

The word "instead" is just there because the two uses have different action economy. I think that you are adding an extra restriction on the ability that doesn't actually exist, TigerDave.

Absolutely fair enough!

I don’t swim in RPG waters that frequently, so those of you who do will have a better feel for how the rules flow and RAI. Also, I am a rabid advocate that the players and the GM decide the rules for the game, not for the outsiders. Case in point, in my game, a mechanic can take a run action and split the distance between character and drone. Means they run slower, but I wasn’t happy with a pure ‘only one of you can move’ interpretation.

The following is not to be taken as a continued advocation for the point; I have surrendered the position. I just want to share with you how my mind has been programmed by my career, so when you see a comment in the future and may wonder how I came to that conclusion you will know. I hear repeatedly, “Words have meaning.” MUCH more impactful in my line of work than it is in game rules.
