I see it categorical
"armour upgrades"
and below that are the varied types
"light" "heavy" "powered"
and below that are exact items.
the drone just says "armour upgrades" which to me references the large category.
Similar to the "weapons" "small arms" "operative weapons" "laser pistol/soemo perative weapon" pathway. If something referenced weapons it'd be all of them, if you get a bonus to "small arms" its all of the small weapons. If it gives a bonus to "operative weapons" it is only the ones with that, and if it references an exact. Its only that.
So the game really feels set up categorically. So I can't see it as anything but referencing the "armour upgrades" category by the direct current reading.
So I can only read it as "anything listed as an armour upgrade is valid. if you pay for it" which honestly makes sense just fine for me. More so considering how drones are rather destructable and loosable and you would not get a refund on that item if you could not retrieve it.

A related question: if a Mechanic with an Exocortex takes Armor Slot as one (or more) of their Exocortex Mods, is there a limit on the type of Armor Upgrades they can take? I could see not allowing Power Armor-only Armor Upgrades.
(Amusing observation: if a Mechanic with an Exocortex spent all their Exocortex Mods on Armor Slots, and all their 14th+ level Mechanic Tricks on Extra Mods [Armor Slots], they'd end up with EIGHT Armor Slots in their body. Nine if they're also an Android.)

Your drone gains an armor upgrade slot for an armor upgrade (see page 204). If you do not already have an armor upgrade to install, you must purchase one separately. You can install the armor upgrade only if your drone has enough open upgrade slots to meet the upgrade’s requirements. You can select this mod up to four times, each time adding an additional slot.

Currrses....
(But I totally get there being some limit.)
