Crafting items cost same as buying items?

So by the rules in the core rulebook (page 235) crafting an item with UPB's costs the same as buying it from a vendor. I get that they made crafting easier by removing feat requirements but making it cost more kinda removes the point of having crafting as part of your character. Even with the 10% discount for scavenging it just doesnt seem worth it.

Also it puts the screws to merchants (I know its a game not real) that it costs the same to craft as you sell it at. It just bugs me.

The benefit of crafting is that the item counts as 2 levels higher for the purpose of HP, break DC, saving throws, and such. Also, you can just haul around a bunch of UPBs on your ship and whip up whatever tool or item you need.

I like that the system reflects the advantages of an industrial society while still giving some benefit to artisanal crafted items.

The change was needed considering how game breaking unmoderated crafting can be in pathfinder.

Crafters and mercants can still make creds but only as much as their profession skill allows.

PCs do not get the economy of scale and massive factories to let them build stuff cheap, instead they can make slightly better items on a very small scale.

Starfinder doesn't seem set up to run as an economics game, and that's fine with me.
